1) Fighters, "action," survival horror, and first-person shooters. 2) Ico, Katamari Damacy, Tenchu 3, VF4E, and Silent Hill games... Favorites are hard to pick. 3) Clock Tower 3, Spy Hunter, aaannnd... can't remember any more off-hand. 4) Silent Hill 3, I think. 5) XBox, pretty much just because there's the custom soundtrack option and potentially better graphics (aside from some exclusives, of course).

1)RPGs, 2D fighters
2)This is a tough question because I've played so many games at so many different times. I'll list the ones that had an impact when I played them: Shin Megaten 3, Guilty Gear XX, Final Fantasy X, MGS2/3, Silent Hill 2.
3) Suikoden 4, Silent Hill 4, Guitar Freaks/Drummania 3/4 (funny, all of them are Konami games)
4) GGXX or Isuka I guess.
5) Absolutely not. If you want Japanese 3rd party support on a new console, then there's no alternative. If you only want 2D fighters and American games then XBOX is good and if you love Nintendo and/or hate the world Gamecube is good, but the only system nowadays that touches PS2's Japanese 3rd party support is the GBA.
By the way, I'd like to say that 3rd Strike is one of my favorite PS2 games, but it just doesn't seem right.

1) Fighters, Action-Adventure, Overhead/Side-scrolling Shooters (others too, of course, but these are my favorite genres). 2) Katamari, Time Crisis 3, Gradius V, Castlevania:LoE, Vice City, and MGS3 (so far). 3) Devil May Cry 2, Xenosaga (mainly due to high expectations), Guilty Gear Isuka. 4) Probably GTA San Andreas just cause there's so much to do. 5) Gamecube, Dreamcast

1) Almost anything but Racing and Sports games. I only like these if they are goofy or with special attacks, etc. Oh! I also don't like FPS games. 2) ICO, Katamari Damacy, Zone of the Enders 2, Beatmania IIDX, Metal Gear Solid 2 (Still waiting for MGS3 PAL release). 3) Devil May Cry 2, Sega Slam Soccer (I think that was the name), Taisen Hot Gimmick Cosplajong. 4) Almost any of those mentioned in the second answer, but I think I would pick Beatmania IIDX. I can't get bored of it, I only stop playing when I get my eyes tired. 5) I don't like most of the games on XBOX or GC, so... GBA.

ugh seriously, how many times do i have to repeat this? i've had my ps2 since launch and i've never had any real problems with it. i don't know what you guys do with yours (play catch with it, use it to store magnets, etc), but i treat mine as i would my own child. i've had maybe three problems so far, but they're all insignificant in the long run
1) when it couldn't read a dvd that worked on it before (i don't think you're supposed to play dvds on it anyways) 2) when it was struggling for a couple of minutes, trying to read my Unreal Tournament disc (the UT disc is weird though. my ps2 always makes crazy noises when i put that game in) 3) during CvS2, it'd say i unplugged my controller when i didn't do a damn thing (but this might've been the result of a really dusty disc)

wtf stop throwing random, inane shit in there to prove your twisted logic. i've got a multi-tap and it works just fine. it's made by a third party, but nevertheless

Depends on what you want from a PS2, I guess. For me, I would still have my fair share of fighting games (Smash Bros, Soul Calibur); RPGs (Tales of Symphonia, Paper Mario); and Action games (Metroids, Zeldas, etc.) even without my PS2.
I also don't play any console games online, and DVD players are cheap and plentiful, so I wouldn't be missing anything in those departments either. Don't get me wrong, though, I love the PS2 and plenty of the games for it, but if I had to choose between it and the Gamecube it'd be a tough decision.

This would be a much different list.

1) Fighting, RPG, Action/Adventure, Music, Strategy/Simulation (not stimulation, as I accidently typed before), Sports, Puzzle, in that order.
2) MGS2/3, Katamary Damacy, VFEVO (but now FT), ICO, Winning Eleven, Frequency(lots of fun), Breath of Fire V, and probably soon Shadow Hearts 2, as soon as I beat it. Oh and I almost forgot ZOE2!
3) Unlimited SAGA: Not so much disappointing as it is mind numbing and soul crushing. I just couldn't handle it. The beautiful music, artwork, coupled with the very interesting but extremely unaccessable and difficult system made it too much for me.
FFX-2: I know I know, what do I expect. But I just can't believe the series went to Bubblegum pop like that. If the battle system, music, and some of the 2D artwork wasn't so great, it wouldn't hurt so much to call it disappointing, but it was.
Kessen 2: This game seemed like it would be a lot of fun. I love strategy games. However this game seemed to offer little depth. You couldn't really give your soldiers much direction at all, and it never seemed like you had a direct effect on the action. Kessen 3 is supposed to fix all that, haven't played it yet.
4) I have no clue. I'd probably want a game like Breath of Fire 5 or something, but in Japanese. That way I could study Japanese and play the game over and over. Or maybe, Unlimited Saga in Japanese!!! That would take 200 years to beat =) Too bad at the end I wouldn't really be too fulfulled. I'd pick a fighting game but it's never fun enough against the computer.
5) Gamecube has very few exclusives that I'm intrested in. RE4 and Killer 7 were supposed to be system sellers but Capcom knows that it's not worth it. So Gamecube is pretty much SOL. XBox is 90% unnecessary, but the few good games on it, such as Steel Batallion and Ninja Gaiden, save it from the dumpster. Steel Batallion alone probably would make my buy an X-box if I was made of money. 500 bucks is a lot of money though.
But no, the PS2 pretty much rules the market. I don't think that's bad. As long as Microsoft keeps Sony on it's toes, and hopefully Nintendo's 'Revolution' does something good to the industry, than I think we can all breath easy in terms of monopolies. The only monopoly lately is frickin EA.

1. Fighters, action games and inexplicable, slow moving or just plain weird crap. 2. Way of the Samurai games, Katamai Damacy, Dynasty Warriors series, the continuing Tenchu games, Everblue 2. 3. There have been disappointing games but they don't seem to stick in my mind the way the good ones do. 4. If you asked me that question on three different occasions you would get three different answers. It would all depend on what I was in the mood for at the time. There's such a wide variety of games out there it's hard to pick a single title that represents everything I like in games. 5. Sega Saturn with the ability to play import games.
Hmm, I never seem to give direct answers in questionnaires. I wonder where that comes from?
quote: How true is it that the unit breaks down if you as much sneezed at it?
No problems with mine. Then again, I don't play DVD's on it or many games like GTA that constantly stream data off the disc.
quote: And does the new smaller PS2 have any cool benefits besides being... well, smaller?
Has there been any word on how modding the wafer PS2's for playing import games is going? I don't have any information indicating that there is any work being done in this field but it seems a pretty safe bet to assume there is.

1) Adventure, Fighting 2) Onimusha 2 is the only PS2-exclusive one. I also enjoyed Prince of Persia: SoT, BloodRayne 2, CvS2, and, uh, Onimusha 1. 3) Of the exclusives: Onimusha 3, KoF: MI, CFE/CFJ 4) I can give you GBA games, DC games, GameCube games, SNES games, and PC games, but nothing on the PS2. Maybe Tekken Tag or SF AC. 5) I've gotten much more enjoyment out of my DC, GBA, and GC than from my PS2, but I wouldn't consider any of them alternatives. The PS2 is great for game rentals.
Apart from size, the slim PS2 (PStwo) has no benefits over the newer big PS2s -- the latter have all the DVD features (including integrated infrared sensor) of the new PS2 and are more reliable, to boot (and are HDD-compatible, if one cares).

I also bought that game! I always feel atracted to wacky japanese games, and I knew that behind that crappy cover art there was one of those games. I always want to find the game that will surpass the gem called Tondemo/Incredible Crisis. I just couldn't believe it when it was released in Europe!
Now about this game, I knew it was going to be risky, but the low price and the description in the back of the game gave me the needed courage for finally buying it.
The game starts with a cell-shaded intro showing the characters rushing into battle with their contruction vehicles. Maybe the game would have been better with cell-shaded graphics? Of course not. You can notice that the character designer is Motomiya Hiroshi, the author of Salaryman Kintarô. When you select story mode, the game starts with an anime video of the main character, Hayato Kongo, running to the rooftop of his Highschool while he's chased by a crane. Hayato is not interested in his father's construction business (he passed away), but he is forced to fight against the Kongo family servant, the oldman who is driving the crane. He wants Hayato to take over the business, and after the fight, Hayato agrees, as he is thrilled by those odd battles.
There are quite a bunch of those anime videos through the game, wich is nice, but they're all dubbed in english, so I don't always understand everything...
Hayato starts dueling other people for recruiting them, to stand against the rival construction company which is trying to break into pieces the Kongo Family business. I enjoyed the story and the characters, Hayato is a cocky and self-centered guy, which leads to pretty funny dialogs and happenings.
And this is all about the good things of the game, everything else is really bad. I wouldn't mind the technically bad graphics and the poor environments where you fight, if the gameplay was fun and addictive, but it isn't. Legalstep summarized the flaws in the gameplay. I'll add that the special attacks, are ALWAYS executed when you suffer a certain % of damage, so you'll be like let's say, always near the opponent, so you'll swallow your opponent's special attacks, and viceversa. When the special attack is executed, a circle appears around you, it tells you the range of your special attack (which is always the same) and after some seconds, if your opponent is in range, you'll lauch the special attack. Usually, you won't have many chances to scape from that range. So that's it, there's nothing interesting in these battles.
I wasn't dissapointed by the game because, I kind of expected it was going to be bad. Too bad that the game didn't prove me wrong...

1) 2D Fighters first(2D Anything), action and action RPGs second. Can't stand turn based RPGs. 2) SF AC, CFE, Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry 1, Kingdom Hearts 1, Viewtiful Joe 1, Megaman Anniversary Collection, GG X2 the Midnight Carnival, sorry... couldn't limit it to five. Take the first five if you want, those are my faves. 3) Crimson Tears, Castlevania Lament of Innocense, just these two games. The rest of the PS2 Games I've encountered I liked. Seven Samurai 20XX wasn't great but it had it's moments. You can list that as number 3 if you wish. 4) Normally I'd say SF AC, but since I'd have no one to play with on a deserted Island, I'd go with Megaman Anniversary Collection. 5) X-Box is good to get the fighters PS2 skips over and will skip over like SVC Chaos, GG XX Reload (the best GG Game) and so on. Not to mention Online Play for fighters(even though I'm not playing Online yet but I plan to at least next year if all goes) And just to play Halo 2, the best FPS ever. Gamecube is the only system I don't own. Not much in the way of 2D Fighters over there.
Another alternative to PS2 which is gonna sound hella stupid - the Gameboy Advance SP! Why? Every game is 2D! Playing a game like Astroboy Omega Factor is equally as good as playing any 3D Adventure. The Gameboy DS and PSP haven't shown me much to interest me, yet that is. Haven't decided which to buy yet.
