When every Looney Tunes character started out, they were all exactly like Daffy, just crazy. Even early Bugs, and even Woody Woodpecker from Lantz' studio. They all eventually developed their own personalities. And that's what boosted them into stardom. You can't have Daffy acting crazy for 60 years, sooner or later it will get old.
The problem I find nowadays is that these characters were interpreted in different ways and it depended on who was directing the cartoon at the time. Chuck Jones, Freling, Schlesinger, etc. But all WB runs with is Chuck Jones' versions. Daffy was a ladies man (he's had more women than any of the classic cartoon characters with kids all over the place) and he was a schemer. And the schemer still busted out the crazy laugh, usually scamming Porky but he'd get his come-up-ins at the end, and here's where you'd get your crazy Daffy. He's worn many hats, one of my favorites was the inept detective, but all the WB remembers is the Chuck Jones Duck who was always upstaged by Bugs Bunny. So that's all we get. And while I like Duck Dodgers, I don't get why he's not getting the girls 'cuz he always got the girls but I guess in some ways it's still Chuck Jones Daffy, AKA "Shoot me now! Shoot me now!"
As for Bugs being played up as 'the man' in his theatric shorts and both recent movies -Bugs has gotten f****d up every now and then, WB seems to forget that.
I often say Disney = Satan, but they've done a much better job keeping there characters true to who they are in Duck Tales, to House of Mouse, and so on. Disney characters weren't as complex though IMHO.
