Useless bit of trivia : the AST was invited in 95, but got their invitation stolen by the Yagami team. Same scenario in 97, by the NFT, and in 00, by the Benimaru team (Ramon actually). Did I miss any game? 96, by Yagami again, maybe?
Aren't they cuuuute? The scores are Shermie (and friends) = 2, Lucky (and friends) = 0.

As I recall it was part of the story that in '95 the American sports team got their invitations stolen by Yagami/or the Yagami team. Then I may have heard something like that for 97 with the N.F.T.... For 2000, I think there was just an art work showing us Benimaru's team in a cage match with the U.S.A. team.
My story that I have to make up when SNK doesn't provide one, until I find out what SNK's version is, was that Yagami team stealing invitations in '95 some how got him +2 people back in in '96. Either they were reusable or they just got more because they were in 95. Or I supposee Mature/Vice could get them too.
So Goenitz assigned Mature & Vice to work for Rugal to spy on him for chacing the Orochi power, and Rugal assigned them to team with Yagami to spy on him for having Orochi blood ?

Yes 96 was sponsored by C. Kagura. The sports team seem tacky because they are a sports team, but they turn out to be cool playable characters. I didn't miss them a whole lot in '95, but a few years later I ended up liking them more...

Actually, I messed up, Benimaru met Seth who introduced him to Lin, while Vanessa teamed up with Maxima and K'. When she had to introduce them to their 4th team member, they went to that fight, with Heavy D! and Ramon, where the winner could get and invitation to the next KOF.
Also, Rugal is dead in 96. And depending on the year and the scenario writer, sometimes you only need one invitation for your team. (I think most of the time each member of the Garô team receives an invitation, for example, and Ryűkô or Korea often only get one, and Takuma and Kim decide who will go and who won't. And I think Heidern doesn't need any invitation to send his team)
