But I thought you had a decent job at Gamastuthingsmithy ?
Anyway, huh, it's hard to tell, really. Unemployment has always been quite high in France, mostly because various social advantages + nice life + low standards + national laziness turned it into long term small budget holidays. But you cannot get every advantage of unemployment, like our local welfare I guess, since you're a foreigner.
Then there's employment, which work a bit differently than in the States. Basically, there's nothing fair here. Much less than in the US, at least. It's really all connections. Sure, you can get a job the "normal" way, résumé and everything, but it's usually people hooking you up with people hooking you up with people, and somehow somewhere you get a job in the end. The outcome depends on knowing the right person for the right job avaiable at the right time. Because of all those variables, it's not that easy. I know, it's the case everywhere in the world, but let me stress that finding a satisfying job in France another way is usually really hard.
Now the issue for you is that what you are aiming at, I guess, is a low implication job that would allow you to pay the rent and have fun for a year without too much pressure and involvement, allowing you to go back to the US afterwards and leave the job where it's at. I estimate that to be quite tough to find, honestly. I can detail more and go deeper into issues and advantages of such a move, but first I need to know if this is a serious idea or if you were just pissing in the wind.
