It's definitely an important crucial step. If you have something to talk about to other people, something to relate to other people with -- even if it's something most consider nerdy -- even if it's in a locale that most consider nerdy -- it's still an awesome step to take. It has the potential to start on some good friendships -- even lifelong ones, even if you lose interest in what you met over in the first place.
Now, that first step definitely ain't the end-all-be-all to healthy social relationships -- there are definitely many wrong ways it can turn from there. But still, that first step is at least a good step to take.
Still though -- I think the concept is funny. It elicits a few chuckles from me, because it's unusual! And I acknowledge there are probably plenty of things of me that are made fun of. Heh heh -- and there already have been. You know, being into that whole costuming hobby, and being a part of the anime and anthropomorphic fandoms.
