Looks like there's a loke test in Ikebukuro today for it. We'll see if anything shows up online for it. I'm excited about it.

Not that I know of. I knew that Namco is going to be working on a HnK arcade game when the new movies start coming out, but this caught me by surprise.

You all forget... Sega is part of Sammy now... so perhaps they have the expertise to make a good 2D game.

Didn't Sega do any 2D fighting game on the Saturn ? Like that Golden Axe one or something ? (never played it so I'm not sure it's a fighting one...)

Anyway, the SS news is good !

Yeah their Golden Axe fighting game was alright... but really the only good 2d fighter has ever made was Eternal Champions. Both the Genesis and Sega CD versions were pretty damn good and introduced the concept of background related fatality moves.

This news seems pretty weird to me also... because I remember also not too long ago Namco said they were making an arcade Hokuto fighting game. I'm curious to see the game though... not expecting much... but still curious.

I won't argue about the goodness of Eternal Champions (though I'd like to). However, I will point out that it was American, so it's not a relevant example. (unless some absurd scenario is going down)

Any Hokuto no Ken game will be Ok to me, but the one I'm really looking forward to is the one developed by Dokroton Entertainment, a little Italian company. It's a 3D beat'em Up which looks quite promising...

Picking through an altavista translation of it:

it sounds like Guilty Gear, including faultless defense, 2 super bars, air dash, air block, unblockables, gatling combo, attack cancel of some kind. evidently the super meter is separate from the meter used for faultless defense and attack cancel.

the game looks and moves cleanly

NECESSARY SHOOTING SKILL
(aside from "leprosy", this is probably my favourite of all altavista mangled translations. It means "super move" more or less.).

original VAs are in, meaning it will already sound awesome.

no sign of AW-net in the beta... but then again, it is a beta.

overall impression is very positive, but the game does need work.

It's also possible that the garbled translation plus my own interpretation leads to something that is so totally off base that it can't even be called incorrect, but hey, that's what ya get.

Well, the screen looks damn good and if it has some GG influences in it, all the better. Hope it gets a PS2 release, since I know I won't see a machine for it here in the states (or even a domestic PS2 release, for that matter).

Only 7 characters in beta test.
a bunch were blacked out.
Besides... 7 stars, y'know?

hopefully the final select screen will be like a constellation map, with each character holding an appropriate spot...

Yeah, there are 7 North Stars : Kenshiro, Toki, Jagi/Jagger, Rao, Han, Shio, Kaioh...but are all of them in the roster already? Does this mean there won't be any character out of Hokuto Shin Ken and Hokuto Ryu Ken? Is there any chance to get some Rei and Sauza/Souther goodness? And what does Bat think about this...?

Anyone translated it yet?
So, anyway:

- There are 5 buttons: Strong/Weak Punches and Kickes and the special button
- 1 Round lasts 75 secs
- Characters at the test were: Kenshirou, Raou, Toki, Jagi, Shin, Rei and Yuda. There were 3 more unselectable.
- Under the life gauge there is a "Hokuto Shichisei Gauge". You erase a star of the opponent's gauge by hitting him with a "Heavy Strike" or Hissatsu. When the 7 Stars disappear, the Shikessei (Certain Death Star) shines and then the "Ichigeki Hissatsu Ougi" becomes available (like Kenshirou's Hokuto Hyakurestuken).
- There's a Boost Guage and an Aura Gauge, that fills up when you land a hit or gets hit. When they fill up, you can enter Boost Mode or perform Aura Guards, Hit Cancel or the Kyuukyoku Ougi.

- The Fifth button does all the cool stuff like the Heavy Strikes, Aura Guards, Rolls, and stuff.

That's pretty much what's written there.

(Dammit, how many "Ougi" are there in this game?)

I don't care how many characters it has. This is something to be optimistic about. It's a new 2D fighter that (seemingly) looks awesome and (seemingly) has a good system. This is so rare that I can say "even if it only has 7 characters, it'll have more in the sequel and that's good enough for me."

After all, SFZ, Vampire and SF3 all started out with low character counts.

Yeah, this one can be the best anime adaptation to a VS game since JoJo 3, so I don't really care about the number of characters as long as they make a good, entertaining fighter...

Rei was already in the beta.
And so was Shin.... who I hope shouts,
YURIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
when he loses.

I so hope this game rocks.
And then, after rocking, gets selected for SBO next year.
At which point the flyer shows people pointing up to the sky, with the caption,
"WE WANT TO CHALLENGE GOD"

And then, in the post championship interview, the champ is asked,
"What did you think of your opponent?"
"He is not the successor to Hokuto Shinken."

it should be noted that a certain other fighting game that would seem to play similarly to this one features heavy guiter rock.
