Real first name: John Age: 21 MMCafe Board Function: Stink up the draw board, weird people out, lurk when no epic-sized, long-winded, boring response is possible, slander Siren. Personal website: ANGSTJOURNAL What you do in real life: College Student Location: Chicago (Home) or Iowa City (College) Nationality: US/White Primary Language: English Link to a pic of yourself: Close enough Favorite Music: Jazz, Rock, Soundtracks, World, Folk Favorites (that I can immediately think of): Anime: Lain, FLCL, Azumanga Daioh... Manga: Battle Angel Alita, Nausicaa, Sgt. Frog... US TV Shows: The Prisoner, Twin Peaks, Teen Titans, Daily Show, ReBoot, Space Ghost:Coast to Coast
Rant About Something: I'm ticked off with the game and movie industry's torrid love affair with 3D. It's especially going to be hard for the US movie industry (well, at least animation) when everyone finds out they all can't be Pixar. And since most studios shut down their traditional animation studios, when the 3D gimmick wears off and everyone's tired of the over-saturation of CGI, I think it'll hit the US animation industry hard, and leave places like Europe and Korea with burgeoning homegrown animation to rise up (and of course Japan, which not only has a big animation industry, but has a strong foothold already in the US). But the game industry is bleaker, since technical specs rule the day and people gush for "realism" over style. Though if the complaints are true that "professional-looking" games are becoming too pricey for non-beheamoth companies to produce, maybe we can see a 2D roots revival among indie developers (hell, The White Chamber is a free, point and click game and it's great - even was praised in the NYTimes). But then again, I'm hardly an expert on the issue, so who knows, someone could put me in my place about a number of things.

And Sano, they are taking too long with Ryu Final scanlation. But I guess that just means we have to be patient.
About the Ryu Final Scanlation, me and Gabrielzero of SRK post over at the Mangaqwest, we've been trying to get them to hurry up, I mean, the site's been around since the fall of 2004. I tell them about all of the people at MMCAFE, SRK, snk-capcom and Gamefaqs waiting on them to start the thing and how much they would love to see a Ryu Final Scanlation. I can tell them about all of these people until I'm blue in the face but it would help a lot if more people were to post over there since the site only has like 12 members and tell them you support them and how you feel about it, it might hurry things along. They were going to start off with 19 pages and I suggested they just give us 5 stinking pages for now since that was taking too long, of course I never thought they'd scan the cover a bunch of times or if that even constitutes as part of the scanlation but oh well... Anyway, 14 more pages are translated, we are waiting on the editor who ironically her name is Patience... in her defense, she's been really busy as of late...

Real full name: Joan Soto Targa Age:23 MMCafe Board Function: lurker, rather-useless-posts' poster. Personal website: 404 What you do in real life: Studying last year of Computer Engineering (5th), looking for a summer job, looking for a practice job for next year while doing the project. Also, trying hard to get an actual real life ^_^ Location: Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain. Nationality: Official: Spanish -> Actual: Catalan. "Languaging": Catalan and Spanish. English de Zaragoza and just starting Japanese. Can read easy texts in Portuguese and French (such as Iggy's articles ) out of similarity. Link to a pic of yourself: Nope. IkariDC has one of him and me, which I forgot to save, stupid me. Hey, Ikari! Upload it again plz! (I'm the not bald one, BTW) Favourite stuff: Uh... me no like to make favourites. Depends on the moment, on the circumstances, whatever. Let's try: Fav music : Almost anything. Preferably melodic, harmonic and fast over slow, but I'll take anything. Maybe VG music I can recognise. Fav games : If I started I wouldn't end. Maybe what I call the "discoveries": games that I didn't know much (or anything) about, that loved them while playing them and then found out that they're "universally claimed" (didn't know how to say it better ^_^) as very good games. This kind of proves that a game is certainly good to me. I don't like it the other way around (getting hyped about some game and then it's not that good. Or it is, but still...). Examples: Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist, Gabriel Knight: The Sins of the Fathers, Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, The Firemen and much, much, etc. Fav manga: Many again. Right now, I'm in love with Hagane no Renkinjutsushi/Fullmetal Alchemist (see tag). Also loved so much Azumanga Daioh and Monster. Then there's Yotsubato!, Meitantei Conan (but too freakin' long, slow and repetitive, goddammit!), Naruto, ROD (The first volume read only tho'), etc. Fav. anime: Generally, I'm a "manga over anime" fan, specially after seeing what they did with the Conan anime -ack-. Anyways, here we'd have Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, ROD (See av. The OVA, haven't seen the series), 2x2 Shinobuden (Actually not, but I saw it recently and it was funny), etc.
Rant About Something: Why do I have to rant about something?! Who gave you permission to make me rant about something?! I won't rant about anything.(Sorry. Not feeling inspirational today u_u)

Here I go:
- Real first name: Fernando - Age:24 - MMCafe Board Function: Trying to look smart, without success. Being surpriesd by things everyone knows. - What you do in real life: Studying Physics... still. I'm finishing this year, hopefully. Then, I suppose I'll study again for a high school science teacher job. Teaching is fun. - Location: Granada, southern Spain. - Nationality: Spanish. - Primary Language: Spanish ("Granaíno" accent, of course.) - Link to a pic of yourself: Too lazy to upload. - Favourite music: Anything... that I like, that is. I tend to hear videogame music, but I like other things, too. - Favourite books: The Lord of the Rings, El Club Dumas, Las aventuras del Capitán Alatriste, etc. - Favourite writer: Arturo Pérez Reverte. - Favourite food: Spaghetti, sopa castellana, gazpacho, any *good* cheese, jamón serrano, any *good* bread, etc. - Favourite videogames: Final Fantasy Tactics, SFIII:TS, SM64, Vagrant Story, to name a few. Final Fantasy Tactics and SFIII:TS seem to survive time way better than anything else. They get better over time, in fact. - Favourite manga: Berserk, Yakitate! Japan, Love Hina, among others. Don't try to see a pattern in my tastes, they're just too random. - Favourite anime: I don't watch much anime, but Cowboy Bebop is a damn masterpiece. - Favourite comic book: The Ultimates is great. - Weapon of choice: Magic, or swords, or spears, or anything cool. My real weapon of choice is the word, however. I can drive anyone crazy just talking about everything. - Rant About Something: Videogames (specifically, the videogames I tend to like) are lately too easy. Also, I don't like the artificial lenghtening applied to rpg's, just to sum hours to the count. I prefer my games to last a reasonable amount of time, but if the game is truly good, I don't mind the duration: Metroid Zero Mission is as awesome in its own way as Advance Wars, and the latter is way longer. I could continue ranting, but I'll leave it there.

my friend's talked about an awesome blackbelt that teaches jujutsu at UH's mixed martial arts club. i think that may be Thomas Kurain. i've been too lazy to see him myself, but now that you mention it, it'd be nice to watch him teach or even take a few classes from him. grappling is so fucking fun
also, maybe i can get some info from him about that Shinkikan Dojo. my sensei may kill me, but it's a lot closer than driving out to the freakin Woodlands
As for me till I get money saved up again I'll go back to Muay thai but work with my boxing first. Muay Thai's crazy, dude. i don't like how they attack the shins 8(
Yeah since due to income my brother would take from Kru pong at one to one gym then I would condition at home since we got almost the same equipment there and just learn from him since its essentially pretty simple.
One last question, the mixed martial arts team, I heard they have a notrious thing about being "brutal" quote on quote. I was thinking of going to go join once I transfer but you know the saying, check the ego at the door and so forth, controlled sparring etc etc. Kinda of a claim or truth? Would sound like fun, would like to get into some shooto action.
But yeah Thomas Kurain, I finally was introduced to grappling and jujutsu when I met him. I had some form of grappling/take downs cause I used to do chinese kickboxing [sanshou] when I used to train with Shi Xing Hao in that Shaolin kung fu academy at the chinese civic center next to hong kong super market back in the days.I primarily was more of a striker person and then I was just wow, same way you feel bout grappling.
http://www.shinkikan.com/index.shtml heres some info on shinkikan place. I believe Thomas Kurain holds also a seperate group of people, along with one of my close friends and teaches jujutsu. He rented some house nearby in missouri city If I remember correctly when I first met him. You probably have met him before I think he is heavily engrossed in Japanese culture because his dad sent him there to a good friend when he was a kid that and he usually holds demonstrations at the Houston Japan festival. He looks of middle eastern decent with a thick black beard if it helps jog your memory.
I think he teaches kenjutsu as well but yeah here ya go and good luck with your training!

hey, good luck to you too! i'm pretty burnt out myself. haven't really recovered from the last tournament. no motivation, no spirit, just doing everything half-assed. i don't really know what's bogging me down, but i'm sure i'll get over it sooner or later
I guess the rumors were true haha. It reminds me when my friend was at baylor about to train with their mixed martial arts team, and their coach made my friend signed a wavor saying that his fighter couldnt be liable for any damage put on my friend and claiming he would have him tapping in the first minute. So my friend was like.. ok whatever, ended up the mma he was sparring wanted to tear his head off. My friend does boxing and it was pretty funny watching the mma sparring partner of his got off gaurd and seeing my friend go nuts grounding and pounding him screaming out "tap out to this in a minute " Oh well, so much for a controlled environment.
But at any rate, hope I run into of UH would be cool to hang out sometime. Though yeah your burnout is a pretty good sign you worked pretty hard, take a good break atleast you deserve it for sure!

Is it really that difficult to picture normal people that also happen to be gay, and not overplayed clichés that fail to question them even in the most basic way?
I'd like to agree with whatsizname about how sexuality is an artificial concept that's going to fade away eventually, but with shows like this that dictate what a gay man must look like, I'm not confident anymore.
I happen to agree with this. Despite all of my odd behavior here on this board, at the end of the day I am a young man who happens to like men. I will not be some desperate fag hag's fashion advisor. I'm not about to be the wacky best friend either. I have my moments when I will get overly well..."gay" but for the most part I do not try to overcompensate for anything. The same cannot be said of some people I go to college with, but I shoot them evil eyes and that makes me feel better.
Honestly, one thing I hope for, however futile, is that someone will one day write a CONVINCING gay character for film/television. Unfortunately, right now we still consider the worst stereotypes "groundbreaking", at least in the US. Sure, it can be funny, but is it accurate? Hardly. Show me a character who's gay and not the wacky best friend or completely boring. How about one who has room to change and develop? Oh, no demand for that? Wacky best friend it is, then.

I also hope that someday, fat goth girls will stop to dye their hair in blue. And they would wear wide bags instead of dresses that would be too tight for a somalian woman, and learn to eat properly without having more food on them than inside them. That would be a huge relief.
At least they're not pretending to be cosplaying as a lovely character of RS3, they would be killed 50 yards before the door of my office if they ever tried.

Ricky Vasquez from My So-called Life was quite a good character. That series had great characterization overall, really. Thanks to the Mrs. I've seen the entire run about five times now, I actually complain about it being cancelled from time to time.

Nothing is true for everyone. I'm only speaking in terms of statistics. When I took psychology of sexuality courses in the past, it was funny because people would interrupt the class every 5 minutes and say "That isn't true. I have a cousin who..."
Women -do- have a stronger sexual appetite than society indicates, because, on the whole, there's still a negative stigma for women to express interest in sex in the same way that men do. I should have clarified, though. What I was talking about was semi-anonymous sex with multiple partners, in which case, I'm pretty sure men still win out by a fair amount.

Yeah, it's the same thing with me sometimes. Since I usually just play against the computer, I'm missing an element of play. It's like if I was born and raised on a desert island and had a guitar. I'd play it and be satisfied, but when I left the desert island, I'd find out that I had it all wrong and that I didn't know how to play guitar at all, even though I had devoted years to it.
Now, I don't play many fighters alone, because I have my band mates to play with and games these days tend to have awful AI.

If you use correct jargon and string the jargon together coherently, you can sound like you know what you're talking about, even to people that actually DO know what they're talking about. It's even more convincing against people that don't have sound knowledge. With the availability of materials and things online, it's very very easy to have "theory" knowledge without any actual playing skill. Most "debate" on tiers, matchups, etc. is conducted by people with merely average skills. On SRK, there have been a good few well-respected players that are nice enough to provide REAL insight on what's what. There's a reason why "theory fighter" has a name.
Heh, I suppose I'm one of those. I'm only an average player in most fighting games I play, but if I like one of those pretty badly, like SFIII:TS or GGXX, I readily inform myself in whatever forums are the more appropiated, whatching vids, reading strategies, etc., and end usually being the best example of "theory fighter". I can go on on a discussion of how the teleport cancel affects Slayer's play, although I've never been able to pull the most complicated ones (and never in an actual match, only in training), or how charge partitioning with Remy is a must have, when I struggle to get it off everytime I try to use it. However, I for one never hide that aspect: Since I know I have limited skills (reflexes, etc.), I try to improve by knowing more (and I actually succeed by a degree). I guess my "theory fighter" sills are not to try to impress anyone, but because I like the game and I want to know more about it. And I think most people that plays "theory fighter" and is not an ass is the same as me: a poor soul withou enough skills to pull off all that stuff, but that likes the game a lot.

Trouble is, when you're at the same level, and can figure out the other person's particular patterns, can you really advance, or do you just stay at the same level? I don't really know the answer to this yet...
I try to change up my patterns, so maybe that helps. hmm!

Meanwhile, it's tough to know how good you are outside a circle of friends. I have this one friend who's a champ at fighters who becomes my "master" in every fighter we play, and I polish my stuff against him and then kill/teach my other friends, so I always end up as the second-best player in our group, but I have no idea if that would make me even remotely adequate elsewhere. But the psychologies are what you'd be missing if you didn't go to the crazy arcade scene.
Catalyst, I think turning up the AI difficulty can train you to at least block better and give you a punching bag, but in the end it does nothing at all for your mental game, since the computer just isn't a person who's reacting. It can block/zero counter/guard impact crazy things, but it doesn't have even the most basic ability to -adapt- to what you do and what mental tricks you play, which is why I don't find it fun I guess.
That said, Time Mage, I don't think knowing the theory is bad...I owned the American Versus Books SFZero2 guide way before I owned that game just so I could get basic concepts like crossups and cancelling through my head, and it helped when I finally owned the game.

fighters etc.
Getting new people to fight makes games much much more fun. If a good fighting game is getting stale, it usually just means that you need to find new people to play with.
People of the same level can improve if they try. You have to find things (possibly online) that you can abuse and ABUSE IT. Find tricks that work against that person and abuse them all to hell. Now, if the other person isn't that keen about the game, that may prompt them to just give up. But if they want to get better, they will be forced to find ways around that, and find their own junk to abuse on you. This is more or less the foundation of competitive gaming.
This may sound really hardcore, but don't be satisfied with your execution unless it's already like 99% on. If your character has combos that are useful but seem "hard", learn to do them. Practice them in training mode, and practice them on live opponents. A combo isn't useful until you can consistently apply it to a live opponent. Learning link combos that give you time to hit confirm into supers is a huge boost. Sure they're hard to do, but once you've got something like "d.MP, shippu" down pat, the power of your ground game is increased almost exponentially.
You have to want to be better and you have to actively work at being better. The good thing is that when it comes to things like execution, it's easy to tell whether or not you're getting better. The bad thing is that sometimes you might find half-assed "solutions" to problems that kinda sorta somewhat work, not well, but are easy to do. These "solutions" quickly become habits; a better answer you usually screw up and get punished for, while these hack answers are easy enough to do that when you're under the gun you take these easier way outs (which might really be dead ends). The only way to really kill these bad habits is to have someone who will punish you for doing them. Yep, punishment and reward.
I've got a bigass comment about how you can get better by playing agains the CPU (it involves contrivances and goal-oriented play), but right now I'm working on a comsci assignment.

This is true. Also, you develop a tendency to get attached to what works against the computer and abuse their AI. I've gotten -very- good against the CPU in some games, then try the same things on human players and they don't work AT ALL. So am I good at the game, or not, you know?

Of course it isn't. What I tried to say is that, even trying to learn all the tricks of a game on the internet, everyone has a set skill. The skill level is, in my opinion, determined by: raw skill, that is, what are your natural reflexes and execution skills, and the patience to train. I, for example, lack on both subjects: My natural skills are not very high, and I can stay hours in trainng mode, but not practicing one thing, I rather try several combos/strategies/whatever, without perfecting any of them. I just give up once I see I pulled it off twice or thrice. So, my best way of improving is by outknowledging my opponents, even if that only works until they use that knowledge against me. ;_;
And regarding the ability to improve playing against the same people, my experience says that you can improve a litte, but it's nothing compared to the leaps in every aspect that you experience by playing new people with a level about yours: You get to see new strategies, different behaviors, different characters, etc.
Oh, and to be on topic:
Hi, my name is Fernando and I like have a love/hate relationship with statistical physics.

Well, knowledge counts for nothing if you lack the ability to apply it when it's needed.
Q is my absolute favourite character to play as in 3S. I only seriously practice playing as Q, even though he dies messily to a few/many very common characters like Yun. Unless you happen to be consistenly psychic, in which case it doesn't matter who you pick, winning with Q demands calmness, intelligence, and a bit of luck. The only really dicey thing with Q execution-wise is kara throw: either you've got it, or you don't. His combos are generally easy, and some have fairly relaxed timing. A total contrast would be... well, Yun: how good Yun is is largely determined by how good your execution and usage of Genei Jin is. Aside from that, Yun mostly runs away to build meter, spams dive kicks, and does (blocked/command grab) LPLKMP chain (xx shoulder) xx genei jin. Yun does not have to think to the extent that Q does in order to win, especially when he's fighting against Q. With Q, quite often you simply have to stand through a storm waiting for that one opening where you can kara throw your opponent. And usually as Q, you cannot win unless you are either very lucky, or a substantially better player than the other; a merely solid Yun will beat a good Q probably 4-1, if not worse.
That said, Q is really not for everybody. Most will simply find him too boring and too difficult to win with. I sure wouldn't use him as a marquee character to attract new players to fighting games.
I wish I could play 3S online.
