quote: Are you kidding? Our mass media system is becoming more integrated, and video games are no exception. Look at product placement and ads in video games. Look at how pop music is getting into games. Now, rest assured, a lot of games aren't going this route--but the mainstream games are. Look at a lot of EA's games (especially the racing games).
That's different...sorta
Product placements (the kind like in movies anyway) are just there to expose an audience to products they might wish to purchuse... seeing Wolverine drink a Dr.Pepper may remind fans how much they themselves would enjoy a crisp, cool, refreshing glass of it themselves or listening to the newest Limp Bizquit in the newest Tony Hawk game may remind fans to pick up the album the song is on.
However Video Mods is basically the suits thinking people are retarded.
All the characters act out of character (aside from just singing and dancing, sometimes they're playing intrusments and adjusting the lighting too) song choices are often illogical when you actually think about it (ex: They used the Jade Empire characters to do a Mod for that Christine Milian song... which you could see a vague connection if you think "oh 'Jade Empire' is about Asians and the original video is asian themed!" but when you think about it, what does a Kung-fu adventure game really have to do with cunnilingus?) and unlike a product placement where when it's good you don't notice it (in theory the songs put in a game should suit the mood, so Mario isn't running around to System of a Down or Dante cutting up demons to Hillary Duff and ads are placed in logical places in the background) this is a very blantant attempt at commericalize it's like "hey look at our graphics! you want the game!! Hey you like the song? I guess only a hip cool game would have its characters boogy to this song! So you buy the game now?!"
Which is not to say it doesn't worked, I didn't think Jade Warriors looked bad in the little clip they showed before the video and breifly considered trying it someday... I still haven't but I assume someone out there was all "Hey that game looks good... OH MAN they're dancing to the song about oral sex!!! I GOTS TO ADD THIS GAME TO MY GAMEFLY LIST!!!"
Blanka and Dan make for a most excellent tag image (yeah still not funny)
