There will be 12 characters, and they don't plan to widen the roster above 12.

Smart move from Funamizu, and unexpected when you know what he did in the past : if you can't top the consumer games and their 50 characters, make a better game with less unseless drones.
The question being "was it really necessary to buy a license for this". I would have rather had a totally original game if they are going this way.

Oh well.

I agree with you, it's a smart move to focus in the gameplay and not in having every single character from the series. And about your question, I think there are two main reasons: First of all, it's the best license they could get their hands on: regardless of the quality of the game (as long as it doesn't suck horribly), the game will give good profits. And, since the character designs are already done, they can focus on the game itself. Creating a whole set of new characters is one of the most time consuming parts of any new game.

The reasonable number of characters is encouraging news. As long as it isn't Goku with twelve different types of glowing hairstyles there's a good chance that there will be a collection of unique fighters in the game. I'm sure all the DBZ freaks will be screaming that such and such a character isn't in the game which will give the game producers an excuse to not only make a sequel but to stuff it full of cannon fodder characters with swapped moves lists. The more I think about this the smarter a decision it seems to be.

I also think the decision to go with the DBZ license is a good one. Instead of being a no-name, untested production company with a bunch of characters nobody has heard of they have a game filled with characters that people the world over have heard of. The game will practically sell itself and if it's good it will also help establish their company's name as well.

It's Cel Shaded. Check Magic-Box for images.

12 characters, don't you see? Funamizu is making another SF2, LOL!

And the current crop of Manga based fighters -

Hokuto No Ken (Fist of the North Star) - 7 characters

This DBZ Game - 12 characters

Jump Superstars - At least thirty playable characters, about 120 are supporing characters (Like Strikers for lack of a better word)

Ain't it funny that the daddy, Jump, of these characters kicked all of their Asses in terms of rosters, LOL!

I'm equally excited about all 3 games, I hope they all come to the US.

10 now? Well at least it's an even number. Do you happen to know the roster thus far?
