is out in Japan!
Which of course means almost nothing to most of us. But still...the pretty pictures!

I quote playasia of all places:

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-43-70-q7t.html&main=fly#

Some sort of a new ultimate action battle system, aerial combo system, and a strategy advice system. Game's overall producer is still Hidenobu Takahashi, while main scenario writer is Takahiro Hasebe from Grandia I, and the music is still done by Noriyuki Iwadare.

Hmmm, sounds like a solid team for a solid RPG. Glad to see Hasebe in charge of the story again.

Btw, Game Arts was bought out by Squenix right? Kinda sad...

"Amidst heavyhitting RPGs such as Final Fantasy XI , XII, and Kingdom Hearts II, it might be easy to overlook one of the other RPG franchises on display at Square Enix's Party 2005, Grandia III."

"Despite the fact that our time with Grandia was limited, we have to say we were liking what we saw. The combat system is as engaging as ever, the graphics are solid and we expect the adventure to be suitably epic given Square Enix's claims the game will feature cinematics equal to three movies. Grandia III is currently slated to ship in Japan next month; a US release date or publisher has not been announced."

Wow, Grandia 3 is finally out. This has to be the one of the most significant RPG releases ever. I hope the Japanese fall madly in love with this one and that the localization is flawless.

Ahhhh...I want it, but I'm just totally in love with Shadow Hearts 3 right now, and I don't like any of the character (designs) in Grandia III. I'm sure I'll break down soon enough.

Well peeps... Even though I'm not Jap, I'll be getting this on import, because:

1) I can understand enough Jap to play a Jap RPG, and

2) I refuse to wait for it!!!

I rather like Alfina's design actually.
Reminds me of Fujishike a bit in a good way.
And Emelious is just bloody bloody.

Hmmm unfortunate abbreviations..But anyway, I can't wait, since I just finished Grandia II last month, finally. I like the designs well enough, and obviously the fighting mom idea is always priceless. I liked it in the 90's when RPG characters weren't ALL 15 years old or something, there was something more exciting about having a range of folks, like 50 year old Cayenne in your FFVI party, but then, Game Arts has always done this. Just waiting for the Famitsu review...

I'll be playing it soon, I think. Right after I finish getting hooked to Romanesque. There's just way too many things left to do with that game even on my 3rd playthrough.

Stop! STOP! I realize that Famitsu is tragically one of the most reliable sources for game scores, but that doesn't mean it's reliable in the least. The only thing Famitsu's good at is putting games in "classes". Over 35 isn't going to suck ass and under 29 probably is. You can guess as much by looking at a game.

I'd rather just bug Iggy to see how the Japanese forums are reacting to it.

Then again, he's probably busy with Shadow Hearts 3.

I'm sure it's a decent game at least - it's just bad timing that it comes out on the tail end of a pretty hefty release month.

Wow...Minstrel Song and AT got under 29? Pffffttt...then that settles it. You can't trust Famitsu AT ALL.

I've heard Grandia 3 has an awesome battle system (duhhh) a good soundtrack and nothing else interesting.

Iggy, I think people assume you're playing SH3 because of the rampant homosexuality in SH2. It's decidedly toned down in SH3, but I don't know if it's for better or worse, since they replaced it with...something. I can't say what, but something...weird.

Funny thing is the detail that interested me the most in the description of the SH3 characters you made was about the girl that takes off her clothes everytime, for no apparent reason.
I think it can be hilarious, if done rig... I mean wrong enough.

You can't "beg to differ" because you haven't played the game yet. Well, you can, but I'll point and laugh at you. Of course, maybe I'm misunderstanding you and you're using "interesting" as "something to get excited about". Because while you can't say (for sure) that the scenario will be interesting, you can say it's "something to get excited about" even if it might be disappointing in the end.

While the scenario to Grandia was enjoyable and charming, it was also generic. "Old school" is not an excuse for lack of innovation in my books and I have a growing intolerance for stereotypes in games.

also...

IGGY!

Unfortunately, Shania is not cool or funny in the least. Her taking her clothes off is gratuitous, borderline gross fanservice. When you talk about it, it's funny, but when you're playing the game, it's just annoying. She's an annoying, out of place trashy character that men will defend because she has big boobs and gets naked. She's on "their side."

Oh of course Famitsu isn't the be-all-end-all, but it will be reviewing it sooner than most, and the writers' skills are slightly above those of little children, which is more than I can say for American-based review sites and magazines nowadays. I like it more for ranges, too, and I always keep in mind that Vagrant Story managed to get a very high score when I see their reviews. Still, find me a better magazine that will have a review within the week that I'll spend preparing to buy the game, and I'll happily read it, of course.

What a shame.
It's not THAT difficult to make a terribly fanservicey character who would be fun at the same time, is it ?

More interesting and accurate than magazines : reading player's opinions with a grain of salt.
Players are (usually) not paid by companies to say the game is great, don't say the game sucks because they have been paid by the rival company and (usually) have actually played the game they are talking about (and this last detail put Rogers out of ganchû).

With internet forums worldwide and 2ch in Japan, the videogame magazines don't serve any purpose at all anymore, beside giving jobs to some nerds who can't do anything positive with their life, like working in a bank, discovering a cure for AIDS, or selling organs stolen on 3rd world countries children.

So let's say you need to advice on which manga in Shonen Sunday is best to read (this is a trick question, but let's ignore that). So you walk outside, and like any day, you see a madman talking to his feces, an infant hanging from a powerline, a naked 78-year-old man pointing a gun to his head, a wild boar and a blind man who had his face ripped open by the wild boar.

NONE of these people are reliable sources for advice on which Shonen Sunday manga to read, so relying on any of them would be a mistake.

Regardless, I don't know that Famitsu has as much misinformation or reviews where the reviewers say things that are just WRONG or don't make any sense (like so many American publications), so I get your point. Still, my analogy stands.

Edit: Iggy posted while I was posting AGAIN!

No, you're right. I don't mind fanservicy characters if they have something else to them or they don't just SUCK. I don't hate Shania because she gets naked all the time, I hate her because she's one of a million lame female leads.

Well yeah. Exactly.

As for this "online reviews" business, I'd rather read about what the cafe or IC or gamespot thought about a game than read multiple opinions of online people I don't trust/know.

I remember back in the day when Famitsu's word was law among American Japanophiles. Nowadays most people realize that they are (and always have been) a fairly average magazine, and like most other review services should be taken with a grain of salt.

It's still annoying when they feed fanboys by giving fucking Nintendogs a perfect score though. As soon as I saw that I knew I'd be reading post after post of how Nintendo is revitizlutionating the videogame industry with their uber game about taking your pretend dog for a walk.

Speaking of player reviews, here's a mini one snipped from the Grandia 3 gamefaqs boards:

Grandia 3 can be an absolute eye-candy, looks nice and plays nice, but only with the main game. You not getting much more gameplay out of it. The music, I like it in general. Theme song fits as much I was afraid it wouldn't. However, some battle msuic need more work, to bring out more excitement. Then again, there are next to no awesome or memorable fights in the game, except few. Then, the battle system, few twits here and there, even with few additions, like the Aerial Combo(which is cool, because you can have multiple characters hitting the enemy one after another, if your timing is right. Got a record, anyone? ^_^), the battle system is running in circle=Not going anywhere. The battle feels slower, maybe I am getting used to fast pace battles, especially like Atelier Iris Eternal Mana 2 which go similar functions of the Grandia series' battle system. The story, while genetic, I enjoy it overall, there are quite few touching scenes and I so fall for those.

Before all the anti-gamefaq people start hammering on me, this is from one of the few members whom I think has a credible opinion. But again, as everybody mentioned, player reviews need salt.

For his full rant, towards the bottom, poster is Kouli.

Oh and Iggy, personally I wouldn't call it microcelebrity status as much as...oddness. Plus, you seem to be similar to me in that you spend more time reading about games than than actually playing them.

Did Kouli win the lottery or something? He OBVIOUSLY doesn't work or go to school and yet he buys every single RPG that comes out in Japan, wins them ASAP, writes FAQs, answers questions in E-mails and talks on the message boards. What the hell is up with this guy?

Hmmmm...I like genetics, but not in RPG's. Perhaps this writer secretly works for not Famitsu but for...GAMEPRO?

In the end, of course, reviews aren't that helpful, but I'll take a decent magazine editorial (hard to find) over random people I don't know, like everyone said, especially since there are people online who can tell me how Thousand Arms and SaGa Frontier are great games. If the MMCafe main page had reviews, I would enjoy reading them, and of course IC is much more likely to impress me nowdays with both wit and good reviews here and again.

PS: Polly, now I know I can spook you by sneaking up and saying "FAMITSU!" behind your back. Watch out...

I've been playing Grandia 3 for a bit now, but it seemed to have stopped being fun after the first 2 hours and the voices are horrible. 2ch has been quite negative about it too, I feel like stopping and getting Summon Night instead. But I can't stop hoping the game gets better later on.

Then again, there are even more negative reviews about Summon Night. But then again just about the entire series gets bad reviews anyway. Come to think of it, I don't even like playing the Summon Night series, what am I thinking!?

...back to Romanesque full comp.
