I got Urban Reign this morning and after playing it all day I just had to stop when my hand cramped up bad. I barely noticed that I've been playing it for 8 hours straight.

I have to say, this is probably one of the deepest brawling engines I've ever seen. And extremely, frustratingly hard. Still, I honestly think it's the best brawler I've played in a long, LONG time. The challenge of figuring out all the ins and outs of the engine is worth the trouble. Too bad about the characters being ordinary (aside from the two main characters there's not much personality to speak of), but it's obvious the focus was on the gameplay, and I think they did a damn fine job.

So, yeah. Cramp award.

Sounds promising. Since walking down the street and beating up any goons you come across is one of the simple joys in life I've been looking for a new brawler and it sounds like Urban Reign may deliver.

What about Beatdown?

Yea, I'm actually looking at it seriously now.

Does it feel like a fighting game at all ? Does it feel like Tekken?

What are the controls like. Is there a "step" or an 'evade button'? Is it as simple as watching the move come and then dodging it with a button press? How do throw escapes and stuff work?

Thanks =)

Yeah I've briefly messed with the game... but it's at the same time as Armored Core Nine Breaker, Scooby Doo Unmasked, Fire Pro Returns, and the most excellent Burnout Revenge

*insert fuchi pirate picture here*

From what I've played it feels similar to Beatdown... but more fluid. Rather than blocking you dodge with X timed with your opponent's attacks. You also have lots of attack options... high and low... standing throws and throws on downed opponents... and special attacks when you're surrounded... and considering this is really only from like 30 minutes with the game... I'm sure it has even more depth than that. There's also running moves and weapons that I didn't really get into. When I get tired of Burnout... this'll likely be the next game I focus on.

It does feel like a fighting game to me, though not so much like Tekken as a completely different game. I haven't played the full version of Beatdown yet but I have played a demo and IMHO the fighting in UR is way better than that.

The controls in general: for basic actions you have attack, grapple, run, and dodge buttons. For secondary actions there's taunt, lock-on, weapon pickup and partner management. Apart from standard features one new thing that I like is the area damage system, which is kind of like a wrestling game. For example if you damage their head enough, the icon turns yellow and the opponent is stunned giving you an extra hit, throw, whatever. When they're stunned you can also make them stand up or come towards you by taunting, which is a neat touch.

Evasion, deflection and throw escapes are handled with square in timing with the opponent attack. If you press it you get a mild dodge that keeps you in front, and if you press direction + square you do a deflection, where you dodge and move behind the opponent. It sounds simple, but you have to be really fast to use it to your advantage and even then it's not always the best thing to do. Throw escapes are handled like VF. You input a direction + square (or neutral) when being thrown and if you match the direction the opponent used you'll either escape a throw or reverse it.

There's also team/ double attacks, weapon kicking, juggle/ running grabs, running up walls and other fun stuff. It's worth trying out if you're curious.

Ignore Beatdown, the fighting engine is sloppy and nowhere as flexible as Urban Reign.
