Street Fighter 4 Capcom has started production of its famous Street Fighter series, and is hard at work on their 4th game, which will be titled "Street Fighter 4, Battle for the Past".
The game is set to run on Atomiswave hardware made by Sammy, and has high resolution graphics.
It is now in the beta stage, and at the current time has 24 characters (Some new faces, and some returning favorites). At this time we can only confirm one character from the game and it is Guile.
Stay tuned for more information as it develops.

Wasn´t Capcom of America responsible for the SF series now?? I remember reading somewhere that Capcom of Japan didn´t want to work with another SF games anymore (if this is true, then this "e-mail news" is false, since the person claims to be from Osaka...).
I´d love to see SF4, and I hope someday Capcom decides to make and release it. But unfortunately, this info seems to be fake... (however, that one from an event involving the SF comics sounds much more consistent).
I can be any person in the world ... maybe I'm this person right in front of you ... or maybe I'm not !!

quote: Wait a moment, if 2DFTG is dead, then why is mugen keep getting more popular? Mugen ? Arcade scene ? Money ? What are you talking about ?
Nah, I am talking about Mugen. ;>_>
quote: I don't see MUGEN as that popular anymore... I'd say the popularity peaked around the time Elecbyte was still updating the program and doing Winmugen. Since then most of the really talented character makers quit and pretty much every major fighting game character has been converted.
quote: Hey wait, there are still talented makers around, like Abster... j/k
Maybe you guys haven't tough Mugen recently, because it's getting popular AGAIN.
Just look at this Jap dude ;>_> :
wall3.hp.infoseek.co.jp
He mugenize all those CvS2 chars by himself, and they are perfect, even have extra moves. ;>_> (And he's still adding the chars, people say he will probly mugenize ALL of CvS2 chars eventually. ;>_>)
Not only he, there are many others.
From what I belive, what cause Mugen popular again is because the emulator Pcsx2 can run 2D FTG games now, and there is an tool called artmoney, which can extract ALL of PS2 games' 2D images and sound without single swear. ;>_>
And do you know what this means? It means that when NGBC and Tenka come out in PS2, Mugen will have all their chars perfectly in no time. ;>_>

Mugen is a by-product of the stagnant 2D fighter scene, which shows that people still care about the genre. I don't think it is capable of reviving it, though. That has to be done by one of the big companies (Capcom, SNKP, Sammy), but nobody has capitalized yet.
There's much more passion involving 2D shooters that I've seen for this year than there has been with 2D fighters within the past... 4 years. If there is a market for 2d shooters, there's a market just as big for 2d fighters as well. It can be done, IMO.
I am interested in the Fist of the North Star fighter, though... that may be a game that can breath some life into this species of games. Then again, I thought Rumblefish would do the same thing, and look what happened with that.
Edit: I have to slightly disagree, Variable Savior. 3D fighters are just as complex, if not, moreso than the 2D fighters ever were. Yet, the 3D fighters are wildly popular compared to their 2D bretheren. I feel it is due to ease of 3D modeling and motion capture compared to building sprites for 2D, as well as the demand for 3D... that is what I think killed the momentum of 2D fighters in general. It's like how Disney moved away from 2D animation.

Sorry to interrupt the fascinating mugen discussion, but... didn´t the whole Capcom vs SNK series originate from sheer internet rumors as well? I mean, people began to speculate about it and then Capcom and SNK crew saw there was actually a fanbase who desired such a crossover (at least, that´s what I read in some magazines, I dunno if it´s actually true).
Maybe someone in Capcom is taking good note of all those speculations about a supposed SFIV release and then the executives would make a move... Maybe. Even all this rumors might have been promoted by Capcom itself to see how people would react to a new game in SF franchise, who knows.
Nah, I guess I want to believe, too. Actually, the most likely option is that these rumors are just simple fanboyish babbling. At the end of the day, I would prefer to keep playing good old SFIII rather than taking the risk of an awful sequel.

Oh, yeah, you´re right. The artwork. I forgot about that. Actually, the only thing I would look forward to if a new SF is to be released is the artwork. I´d love to see Capcom designers back to work...
But I´m afraid that, in a supposed SFIV, Shinkiro would manage most of the artwork. Nowadays he seems to be the "official" designer.
However, if I let my imagination go wild, it would be interesting to advance SF´s timeline 20 years in the future, much like Namco did with Tekken 3. How would a 60 year old Ken look like? (I only can imagine him bald and bearded like Jinpachi Mishima ) And Ryu? Would he have sealed off his right arm like his master Oro? And what about Chun Li? A fat version of Matrimelee´s old hag, anyone? One can only wonder...
On the other hand, it would be amusing a sort of Street Fighter -1 thing. I mean, to go back to the times when Gôki and Gôken were still Gôtetsu´s students. I imagine Gôki as a red haired version of Ken, and Gôken as a bearded Ryu. As for the rest of the cast, Mike Haggar could be the subtitute for Zangief, Gen would be a bit younger, we could see Chun Li´s father, Sagat and Adon´s master would be the muai thai fighter, maybe Makoto´s granpa would be in as well... And as final bosses we could have starring Final Fight´s Belger (not in the wheelchair yet) and a satsui no hadô ni mezameta Gôtetsu. Man, it would be worth seeing
