As per the thread title -- what was probably the first shooter / shmup / what-term-have-you to put more of an emphasis on dodging (bullets especially) than shooting? Or maybe was it more of a gradual evolution?

I definately think it was a "gradual evolution", although you can see the beginnings of this in many late Toaplan games (like Dogyuun). Of course, they became Cave at a later date, so maybe they sort of started the trend, too.

I'd say it's been gradual, as curtain fire-style shooters took over the market. I'd say the first one to REALLY emphasize it though, was psyvariar.
