Hello,

Can someone please tell me something good about having a car so I can calm down over gas? Well, I thought of one: at least I am not taking the bus. This seems to be the worst year for it.

Thanks,
Sushi

The freedom to just get up and go just about anywhere. I recently sold my 2002 Accord coupe (that I miss dearly) which got about 21~24mpg and I'll probaby be getting a 2006 civic which gets 30/40mpg. Plus I car pool to my job thats around 70 miles a day alternating cars. Just step up and make some changes if you can.

So its that not bad. My friend drives a suped up SRT4 and fills up every other day.
Also we could be in Europe

If we were in Europe we could take the fucking metro! I'm pissed off too. Unlike most Americans I'd totally use a metro system if there was a good one in my area.

Boy this is sure a good idea for a thread. I agree I would like to take the metro. Unfortunately all the oil companies bought out the mom and pop mass transit companies in the 50's in the usa. So now we are stuck buying enviroment destroying cars. I read most of the damage a car does is during its construction process. Something crazy like 20,000 gallons of water per car.

Maybe thats why Our water is growing so polluted.

Right now i drive a old skool VW* bus. It gets around 22 mpg on a good day. I was talking to this guy at the gas station and he was like what kinda gas mileage u get? I told him. He has a brand new for expedition something or anotther and he said it gets 10 mpg in the city 11 on the highway. I said gee thats funny considering my car is over 32 years old. your car gets the same gas mileage as a fuckin model t.

Future generations will laugh at us, i have no fuckin doubt.

I know that all too well. They'd be okay if they weren't late as fuck almost all the time. But, then I look at the price for gas and insurance and I realize that the $40 I pay a month for late public transportation isn't that bad.

By the way, is it true that USA has the lowest gas price in the world?

Here i would pay ~1,60$/litre if i could afford to have a car.
Which i can't.
So i have to walk to work.

I am considering about buying a DIESEL Volkswagon Golf. Right now I have a 1992 Nissan 300ZX and I will NEVER sell that. After moving from Sicily to Chicago, I still do not need a car to get around, I still use the train. Gas prices has not touch my wallet yet.

I mad too, I'm really hating those continuous uprising in the price.

Sadly, due to my circunstances, I need my car to assist to the university and also to get to my job in time. That's mainly because the public transport in my zone sucks, so I don't really have an alternative.

The good points: well, this can be sujective, but I think driving is a pleasure, you can enjoy the experience of driving, if you propose to. Listening to interesting music while driving can improve the experience, too (for example, I enjoy driving while listening to the Touhou series music ...and yeah, I know I'm quite a freak) Also, the time flexibility, to be able to go anywhere anytime without depending on any stablished schedule.

On a side note, I don't know your age or situation, but you can use your car to engage on eventual random sex whenever you feel like it. That's a good feature, indeed. Just be prepared for the situation (you'll need special equipment and items for that battle).

I don't know how 'bad' things are in your end of the world; but here in the third world countries the gas started to rise something like 3 or four years ago and rises every 4 or 5 months... The bus ticket NOW is something like 225% more expensive than it was 5 or 6 years ago; the gas is something like 140% more expensive that it was 3 or 4 years ago... AND due to a coincidence the electricity bill also raised due to some problems we have with Argentina and thus the metro has raised it's bill a lot in the last year....

... Me? I walk something like 5 kilometers between my home and the place where I study, that's AT LEAST 10 kilometers a day, that's a lot of time to think and to fry up under the hot ozone layer hole powered sun (And do I need to tell you that the place where the ozone layer is in one of it's worse or perhaps THE worst condition on the entire earth?).

Even thought this might sound like a rant, I'm not that pissed off with the conditions that I have to live with; I can still log on to my pentium I and sit down on my dead tiger's skin, just realize that you aren't that bad after all.

Edit -> Ko-oh ken.

See??? He is a God...

I saw something on a US news program... Venezuela gets the cheapest gas, 12 cents a gallon, basically since they exist on their own oil refineries.

Way to put it in perspective Toxico.

I live in a very spoiled country. Even if most Americans got a 'wake up' call and they saw how good they had it and how badly their country and multi-natinoal companies destroy the world-- no one is gonna listen and get off the couch to do something.

Eh. It's not until there is a crisis that something happens. If in the next few months and next few years we re-elect the same crooked politicians then I really know this country has no hope at all.

Eeek. Time to move to Canada.

I think it's about time you US bitches start to pay up after all those years of freeloading. Finally those Kyoto agreements are going to get signed.

NEWSFLASH

Every person in every nation whines about public transport. It always sucks. But it will only get better if people use it more often.

Maybe I should mention this here...

On Saturday, I am visiting an ecovillage in Missouri for three weeks. (Ironically, I'm driving there. Peh.)

Anyway, their focus is all about sustainable living, and the ecovillage owns two biodiesel-fueled automobiles for the entire community (I forget how many people, maybe 50+?), and people are not allowed to own their own cars. Fun fact.

You can read all about their other earth-friendly (friendlier) living techniques/methods/stuff on their website.

If you want, you can check out my site as well, because I intend to do heavy documentation while I am there.

It's beyond clear that we need alternative-fuel transportation. The governments get too comfy on the support of the bloated oil companies and gas taxes to care.
European gas prices would seem a lot closer to US ones if they didn't have rediculously higher gas taxes in their countries. They get to make up for it by largely being more centralized societys with mass transit. In America, if you don't live in New York city, you probably live somewhere where you drive constantly to do anything. Mass transit is generally a lenghty process reserved for those of much lower incomes.

I think the solution needs to come in two forms. Alternative energy research should begin with companies not currently associated with oil, so they don't have that crutch to use. Additionally, American society could stand to change on a social and city-planning level. I know people who drive two or more hours out of their day just to work, because they live so far away from the better sources of work. That attitude needs to change and that source needs to change.

The reality is, gas will never be cheap again. We'll see price spikes like the current one and subsequent lower prices, but cheap oil is not an option to the major countries anymore.
