I hope I can go to that show... I don't live in LA, but it is in reach. A friend of mine got me the book of artwork from that show as a birthday gift last year, and I look at it every now and then. It would be so awesome if I could witness these new artworks personally.

I am a little miffed with the people that run the shop for that website. I bought 2 t-shirts from the online shop using PayPal in December 2006, and I never received them. They never responded to my e-mails, and I couldn't get a refund because of a technical issue with PayPal.

I'm not geek enough to go to such a thing....

... seriously, the 8-bit Tit wasn't very inspiring.

I found Kagami's sword in a junk yard.
I will rule the world and find that truly good cup of coffee.

I can't imagine it would be - but these shows don't tend to be that geeky.

That exhibit is around until May 12th... I will have to make THREE trips to LA in three months. =( One to make this exhibit and two other times for the JET Program. I recently got accepted and will be leaving for Japan in late July... YAY!!!

And thanks to this thread, it helped me to remember about the shirts I never got, wrote another e-mail and I finally got a response saying things will be taken care of immediately. Thanks indirectly to JJJ... YAY!!!

Since we're on the topic... now, here's a video-game-related exhibit that you all will enjoy, but... you don't have to take MY word for it. </creepy LeVar Burton voice>

yeah. it'll be more artsy if anything

i'm also sad i won't be playing Megaman on a bigass controller, but i'm glad at least two of us will be able to check it out eventually. i'd absolutely love to visit the show there, or at least get ahold of that book Eddy's talking about

oh, gratz on the shirt and JET program. maybe you will meet sabo. then you will duel

Someone took a lot of pictures of the whole show. My favorite so far is the Alice in wonderland take on Nintendo characters.

But is it art? The idea of basing an exhibition around the experience of games is an intriguing one and a nice change of pace from the usual still life or religious subjects. But as I looked at the endless interpretations of Mario I didn't feel as if I was looking at what gaming meant to the artists so much as a kitsch re-imagining of what the character designs. Having art look back at pop culture can be interesting in a Lichtenstein sort of way but it more often than not feels self-referential. For example, is there any point to what appears to be a painting of the old situation comedy "Coach" other than empty irony?

I certainly think there's a lot of nostalgia for nostalgia's sake here, but to me the best examples are semi-literal visual translations of happens in the games, like mario eagerly crushing a mushroom under his heel, or reimaginings of characters, like Blanka as a luchador. As in all art, there are ups and downs - I'm doing my best to focus on the ups here, but the downs, as with all aspects of entertainment, tend to overwhelm anything else.

To be fair all I have seen of the show is the pictures in the link that Shooo-rook provided so my thoughts about the show are more or less second hand. That, and I've certainly seen worse art exhibitions. I think I was expecting something different from what the show actually delivered.
