I've probably said this before, but if the side characters had more edgy scenarios, I really would have enjoyed the game. You could easily add some creepy supernatural element to each story and make it 10 times as interesting.
As it is, after a point, everything just seems like a chore, because the game is so painfully repetitive. But if it was edgy and repetitive...well, I'd forgive it.
That's exactly why it sucks, there's nothing actually appealing about it. No risks were taken. Well, no good ones, anyway. They prettied the game up at the cost of what made the previous ones so good, the plot.
I probably won't ever play it. Random dungeons, uncontrollable party members and repetitive tasks, not to mention a lack of interesting characters or any kind of ties to the previous games (which I still love) equal something bad. I had a lot of hope but the more I found out the less I liked the game. You can't even talk to demons anymore! What kind of bullshit is that?! That's what made battles interesting in the other games. Having an alternative to fighting if you knew what you were doing was awesome. I don't want an extremely customizable hero/plot (depending on who you develop commus with) when everything else has been severely watered down.
MAYBE if Fuuka was a playable character I'd be able to deal, as I like her and Aegis, but no, Atlus couldn't even give me that. I'm just going to pretend Persona 3 never happened. Also, the expansion game isn't even coming out in the US. No thanks.
EDIT: I forgot to mention the complete lack of Philemon and Nyarlathotep (as far as I know anyway). LAME!

Don't get me wrong, I agree that the game fails as a sequel to the earlier Persona in the same way that diehard SMT fans think that Persona fails as a DDS game. I found myself asking "where's the Persona?" frequently.
But the game does have a good number of merits, and I think it's not quite right to say they "prettied the game up at the cost of the plot". I would say "they made the game more accessible at the cost of the plot."
Visually, I think the game looks outstanding, but it's also very low-budget. The environments are either tiled or used over and over again, the character renders are extremely simple (and don't animate much), the persona are recycled, the enemies frequently repeat and they rely on the character portraits to tell the story. It's not that resources went into the visuals over the plot, it's that the writers just didn't GET it.
The main story really isn't so bad, though...it just takes WAY too long to make it happen.
Anyway, I shouldn't bother saying all this, because it's not like I'm trying to sell you on the game. Obviously, it's not for you, and I can't really say it's for me, either. All the points you raise against it are certainly valid as "this isn't good because it isn't like Persona". As a game, though...I think the new ideas work fairly well for a little while at least. The game was fun for a good 60 hours, but that doesn't say as much as it should when it takes 100 to win it.
As for characters coming back, well...no Philemon, but I would argue that Nyarlathotep is in, if not by name. Also, if you watch TV on some of the old character's birthday's, you'll hear a short blurb from them. It certainly wasn't anything special (since I don't remember what was said), but I seem to remember catching Reiji.
Oh, and I didn't mind not being able to use Fuuka so much, since you get a lot of her as your "guide". She's always talking. It was a huge relief when she replaced Kirijou. It'd be kinda cool if you could have anyone as your guide and use her, though. I'd like to see what everyone would have to say.

is P3 worth buying for fans of the series?
That's a very hard question. I can only say from my experience that it made my heart hurt as a Persona fan, but I still enjoyed it in many ways. I do not, in the least, regret buying it or spending the large amount of time playing it that I did.
Still, it isn't much like Persona, so I would gauge your interest in it based on how much it appeals to you as a game, not as a Persona game.
I wrote a detailed (if a bit boring) review on it, that I guess I could post here, despite its length. If you'd like me to mail it to you, I could do that, too. It should pretty much answer any questions you'd have about the game.
As for the pizzas thing, well...even if I was tremendously hungry, the most pizza I could eat is half of one.
