While this game does look interesting is it playable without the paddle controller?

Very much so.
I haven't had a chance to import the paddle since I'm short on time and money. But it's so addicting, you wouldn't really be bothered without the use of one.
If you have the DS Ruble Pak, it supports that.
In fact, I believe you can't use the paddle during online battles, since it would give you an unfair advantage against an opponent who doesn't have it.
