Maybe I need to lurk moar, but I haven't seen anything on Nanashi no game, The Game Without a Name for the non weeaboos, SquareEnix first horror game for the DS. The game has been out since 3rd July.
The premise is fairly interesting, yet strikingly stereotypical: there's a videogame around that kills anyone who plays it within a week.
The player is the friend of a victim who tries to resolve the mystery and gets to play the cursed game (which is presented in a retro 8-bit interface heavily influenced by the first Dragon Quest games) and the rest of the game takes place in an ellaborated first person 3D environment where the player gets to investigate the area.
Some aspects are fairly close to films like The Ring or The Grudge, as can be deduced.
The game has nice touches, like when you play the cursed game the graphics being corrupt and the sound off in parts and when one enemy comes at you in the real world the sound goes all crackly like static. The sound effects are great and really get you into the game (the game is recommended to be played with headphones).
I've been playing it for a while and I must admit it's fairly good. I'm hoping for an US release but... I don't really know if this will be brought overseas.
What is the Café members opinion on this game?
But I still want to quench your thirst. Because I am the one that put you into the desert.

Is this the horror game with the Dementium-inspired artstyle?

Is this sarcasm or not? :D
A thing some of you may be interested in is that for the 2D rpg-looking parts of the trailer, somebody has gone and translated the Japanese dialogue shown there into english and uploaded them to youtube.

Been through the site. Four words: Must play this game.
Looks really really good.
How come I hadn't seen/read anything about it until now? You failed me, Intarnets. :(

I think this is one of those rare moments where Iggy's acutally not being sarcastic.
Despite the game being published by Square Enix, it had almost no media coverage up until now. Kind of Ironic how this is supposed to be the age of the Internet and everyone should know about game releases without being press-fed, but I guess that's gaming in the Japanese side.
It's not until recently that only a few small articles came out, so the game's relatively unknown to the general public. Still, the few people who bought it (reportedly 17,000 copies sold on the first day = 40% of shipment) seem to be having fun and they're writing about it on their blogs.

It's strange, I read about this game almost six months ago on IGN and figured that everyone knew about it already. Guess not.

It's a very very tiny piece of text, though. Is there any more?
For those of us who lack proper Japanese skills, it's very hard to follow the game (heavily kanji-based). It would be great that someone translated the "cursed game".
However, it must be taken into account that in Nanashi no game, the cursed game is NOT a full-fledged game, but rather a medium that combines with the actual game for the sake of creepyness. You have to navigate through the cursed game before something odd/evil happens in the actual game.
Oh, and I want the cursed game melody as my mobile ringtone <3

I hadn't heard about this game till its actual release date!
I heard the scenario's shallow but it's pretty scary. I might try it out if I get the chance since the game apparently only takes a few hours to finish.

Do tell us whether it was better than Heavy Metal Thunder after you're done.

I don't know if this will ever make it outside of Japan -from the sounds of it the game barely made it into Japan- but I would love to try it just based on how original it looks. Thanks for letting us know about this one.

For those who are curious on how this game develops, there is already a video walk-through at Youtube:

I have the mp3 of the 8bit game. You probably want to let me know a way of getting it to you.
