I had already caught the Dan parody vibe -parody of a parody of a plagiarism or something like that...this story makes me go WTF all the time xD-, but thank you Prof for telling me about her "yoyutchi", I'm so glad SNK keeps going all out on it :D Besides, I know her butt slap is a lifetime trademark of her, but could it be a reference to the censored intro of Mika's Critical Art in Yuri's Climax as somebody speculated on Twitter?
On to Hein, he moves a bit like Oswald in my opinion, which I think is good because I like Oswald's design a lot.
I saw your article about Ogura's artworks and words aren't enough to express my joy. SNK is serious about hand drawn artwork. I know it's not the same as having in-game 2D sprites, but they proved me wrong about my fear of not seeing hand drawn stuff for this game at least. And Ogura is born the same day and month as me LOL

As for the Combo Breaker stuff, I didn't watched it immediately because I'm trying to read Jojo as fast as I can (I had some serious slowdowns for various reasons) and I didn't feel like going through another Kyo-Iori mess, but yesterday I watched the first minutes and well, there's variety since it's an exhibition. I thought that stream was the tournament.
I noticed Kyo can cancel df+D on the second hit even outside Max Mode, I really like this trick.
Mikel: I really think your guess is right. When SNK says "soon", they usually mean the next trailer day of choice for the game they're talking about. Besides, since you sound quite interested in voice actors, I forgot to say after the Fatal Fury team gameplay I have a strong feeling Joe's CV isn't Hiyama anymore. The new seiyuu sure worked his ass a lot to get in character, and he did a good job IMO -I think the same about Kyo's new CV-, but I feel it isn't the same. I like the new voices a lot, but it's sad to state we lost some of the most iconic voices. I'm definitely waiting for an official CVs list, I hope we don't have to wait for the full game to come out in order to read CVs in the credits.

I feel the same way as you, though I have favoritism towards the new CV's since I have a feeling that they're anime seiyuu this time around. Something I've wanted to fully see since KOF XIII.
Like, I've heard people speculate Tomoaki Maeno as Kyo, and if that's the case, then we'll get to hear how Kyo will sound with an anime seiyuu voicing him instead of Masahiro Nonaka.

Gang-Il is fantastic. The idea of fusing elements from each Kim's style -except Jhun Hoon if I remember well- in one character is brilliant. I think he's gonna be in my main team in place of Kim if Shun'ei doesn't turn out to be my cup of tea.
I had a good laugh at how his pectorals move in the intro of his Climax super xD Such good memories from the ending of his Climax..I definitely am one of those waiting for such an effect to come back to Kim's ultimate special, but seeing another character doing it is just as good for me, even without the huge shining phoenix soaring from the last kick.
I'm looking forward to play KOFXIV more and more after each trailer...
Store specific preorder bonuses -mostly themes but there are also posters/tapestries Licensed KOF14 HRAP.V Hayabusa -I'm really happy SNK granted my wish of a partnership with Hori, but why did they merely changed the artwork? They could change the case color to make it unique... U.S. movelist page updated to match the 36 chara build roster
And now, back to the Kim team for a useless rambling on their music theme xD
Spoiler (Highlight to view) - About the theme, before the 24 characters demo showed us this song is tied to the hotel stage I had always thought it was gonna be the Team China theme, because it gives me a "hope" vibe, a sense of a hero going all out against evil. Still, it fits Kim's team, even though Kim's main goal isn't "JUSTICE AND REFORMING!!!" anymore, because his sense of justice is referenced at least once in the game: when you beat Kim with Iori and Kim is the third character, Iori's victory quote is something like "your stories of justice make me wanna puke

The E3 trailer cranks up color saturation quite a bit...I'd dare to say it's the opposite excess of what we're used to about KOFXIV trailers. But I bet most people would be happier with colors set like this if this setting made it to the full game.
There's Xanadu in the order select screen in the trailer. Can't wait for today's team gameplay, not only because I've been curious about what Xanadu's fighting style could be from the beginning, but also because I can't wait to see the reaction of the French KOF community, which already have given him a huge memetic relevance with jokes like "member select where all the characters are Xanadu", "he'll be banned from tournament play because he's overpowered as shit" and "Xanadu is Saitama's sensei". I'm in for some silly laughs xD

By the way, it's been bothering me for a while. Does anyone knows the Artiste and the song title? Need it badly.
As far as I know, it hasn't been said yet, nor I recognize the band...could be one of those Asian rock bands that only are popular in their country. But I get how you feel, since I'm waiting for more info on the song too myself...as I've already said in the Cafe, I usually don't like this particular music style, but for some reason I love this song, and I was happy to listen to it in the E3 trailer :D

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up. KOF14 plays like a KOF game but feels different right off the bat so I wouldn't be surprised if you guys didn't perform-- did you get a chance to play the game? Only the three usual guys were on stream iirc, so.
quote: They seem to put quite some focus on the 6-player online mode, and apparently teams are randomized, but so far it's not clear to me if matches are played in parallel (3 matches starting at the same time, which would minimize downtime for most players in a lobby) or one at a time (which is more interesting if you want to watch, but might mean some people don't get to play if the player(s) that precede(s) them in their team end(s) up winning the match).
The matches should be played the way they normally are, in sequence. Otherwise it defeats the reason for the spectators and the "Gaya SE" system.
I wonder if the shuffle mode is optional. Anyway it works like this: - Up to 12 players can join the lobby. - 6 of them can enter the match. - The shuffle will randomly group them into a set of 3 players per team.
Also, Just Defence in KOF14 only decreases guard meter reduction and gives additional power meter. It doesn't have any of the other bonuses from MOW like zero chip damage. Not sure why that was mentioned in WNF.

This guy is disturbing...the cradling throw is creepier than his eyes IMO. I thought he was bound to infuse his fists with a dark aura and have a proper martial arts fighting style, given his rather exotic appearance, but SNK went for a clumsy yet brutal style. I guess it's better this way.
Chang and Choi are good as well, I especially like Chang's Max ranbu+Climax combo, the Climax compliments the ranbu perfectly. The stage is just as creepy as Xanadu, and I like it a lot. The BGM ramps up the disturbing factor another notch. Great job.
Besides, we are now sure each team has a unique stage. Has a post-CPS2 fighter ever had a stage for each character/team before KOFXIV? I don't remember, maybe Justice Gakuen and SFEX. It's not vital by any means, but I find it a nice touch.
Totally with you, Xanadu looks disturbing enough. I'm totally not gonna touch this creepy new character. His fight style and movesets are meh... I will stick with the cool characters instead.

Some people find Xanadu kinda alike the wrestler Boogeyman, and in my opinion his masked face may look a bit alike Xanadu's face from certain angles.
The Niconico stream is over, it was just him trying out each move of the 36 build new entries plus Clark, KOD and Sylvie. Sylvie's Climax is now an Ash-style slow lightning ball, traveling in a slightly wavy fashion instead of flying horizontally. Could it be a good tool for dramatic comebacks?
Venator Ballare is a fantastic, powerful song. The emotion I felt listening to it is indescribable. Too bad Nemo never chose Heidern Fleet, I wanted to listen to Survivors Under The Sky as well :(
Shun'ei has two victory poses, I managed to see the second one briefly. It's recognizable because his demon hands don't show up. He's the second character with 2 poses as far as I've seen, the first is Benimaru (I don't remember what's the stream, but he was starting his "Thank You!" pose once). Chin's pose is as hilarious as it gets, he goofily runs in circle x'D

links still use the hold system from previous kofs and anime like blazblue.
Game is trying to be more accessible on a gameplay level, IE not as long of combos, removal of loops etc.
Supposedly (again, not 100% sure) if there are future dlc characters, they'll be free. Cosmetic DLC will still cost money but characters won't (if there even are any that are coming).
That's about it from what I've picked up here and there from talking with people at the show.

On the netcode: - He has been looking at the complaints against XIII's console netcode from day one and keeping all of them in mind - The reception for XIII's Steam version netcode has been positive in general so they are building on top of what they learned there - They are putting a lot of effort into making the netcode solid day 1 and are prepared to act quickly to fix any issues post launch. - The 3v3 online party battle mode will have 12 player lobbies.
On DLC (characters, stages, music, costumes etc.): - They aren't holding anything back for the initial release, we are getting the full game day 1. - They haven't even started thinking about DLC yet. If they do decide to do some then we will have to wait a while since they will be creating it from scratch.
On Just Defending: - They spent a lot of time balancing it in such a way that it doesn't disrupt the normal flow of gameplay - In its initial implementation it had too much impact so they toned it down - They took both offline competitive play and online play into consideration when balancing it

Holy cripes, that's worse than the Tokyo exhibit. I wonder how WNF was.
quote: Question, after the 36 char build, how has been the impresion from top players and casual ones?
From what I've talked with Romance and a few others, the overall feedback seems to be a lot more positive than before.
Back with the 24 character build at Stunfest there were complaints that the game was slow and damage was high. Some moves have been tweaked around since then, which might be the reason why we haven't heard negative reviews on the 36 character build.
The graphics are still something that SNK needs to improve even leaving aside the modeling (for example Kim's clothing looks so plastic compared to previous entries). That's an adgenda they'll need to work in future KOF releases. For now it's probably better just hoping that the game will come out with no delays caused by Sony's ratings and approval.
Overall the general consensus from experienced Japanese players is that the game is neutral-game based so it's easy for 98 players to dive into, but the normals aren't as strong so it might not nessesarily turn into that much of a poking game. On the other hand, players that started from KOF13 will probably have a hard time adjusting because the semi-close range is a harder game since you can't cancel the far normals. You also can't rely on wins from death combos, and EX moves seem to be nurfed in terms of invincibility. So if you were covering your lack of neutral game using random EX attacks into drive combos, 14 will probably be a difficult game.

Hmm let me clarify: We weren't lining up for 5-6 hours daily, that's misleading. There were about a total of 12 selected to do the exhibition for e3. We got to choose which days we could commit to but each day the exhibition one only one hour. Granted, we weren't obliged to show up early, but it was E3, so must of us did. That's why I meant by the 5-6 hours wait (vs sitting in a lounge area playing on stream that we saw in other countries--super jealous of those.)

Cool team, but I wonder what's their goal and why they're allies. I mean, we know that Sylvie is a former NESTS agent, which could indicate that she's evil (then again, Kula and Angel are also former NESTS agents, and Kula is genuinely nice - Angel may be nice as well, but Kula probably won't be too friendly with the girl who tried to kill her in 2001...), and Kukri has some similarities to Lin and Duo Lon, so he may belong to their clan (which didn't like the NESTS after Long/Ron defected from it to join them). Mian does resemble Lee Pai Long in terms of style, but I'm not sure they're actually related (if they are, that's cool).
It will be interesting to find out who these three really are, and if they're this game's Yashiro, Shermie and Chris in terms of motivations.
(speaking of which, I still don't understand why SNK decided to resurrect Mature and Vice but kept Yashiro, Shermie, Chris and Rugal dead, when all six of them seem to be equally popular with the fanbase...)

They are dead.
As are quite a few others, but the aesthetics for most of them don't blend as well with Iori's, which is probably a strong factor, given that he's a popular character, but in-universe very hard to get along with.
Regarding Mian, here are some observations about her name.
I couldn't quite tell if her fan is something that's a recurring part of her moves, or mostly appears for the sake of extra flair when playing with the mask switching, but it reminded me of Mai and how she can be a contrast with that character: * Mai - Japanese, supposed to be a ninja and therefore stealthy, but ends up showing off a lot * Mian - Chinese, practices a form of public performance art, but remains concealed most of the time Not sure if intentional or if any dialogs or story scenes will play with that, but seems interesting.
I wonder if the Yakov mentioned in Kukri's profile is just some assistant to Antonov, or has a larger role, and if the Sylvie's "imaginary" friend in her head will end up being some another world character that didn't get to manifest as much as the likes of MuiMui did in the game...

Loona: your Mai VS Mian speculation is fascinating, I'd be happy if it turned out to be intentional. I have a personal theory, but I like yours better.
Spoiler (Highlight to view) - She could be a Chinese relative of the Yata family -somebody around the net suspects Mian is kinda inspired by Chizuru- since there were rumors about this whole team being connected with elements from previous sagas. I know they only said "connection with antagonists", but I don't see connections with heroes so unlikely, they would add to the team's wackyness.
End of Spoiler
Ish: as much as KOF is my favorite game ever, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the Garou 2 group shot. It's the highlight of the interview to me. I really hope they complete it and sell it as a digital only title, or bundle it with the supposed new Samurai Spirits.
ne0r0: I remember when we speculated Kukri may be from Nepal because of its name, but North Africa -could be Morocco because his supposed favorite food is Moroccan specialty- is appropriate because of his powers.
Is the Atlus stream 30 fps or is my connection acting up? And picture quality is grainier than SNK's daily screens...thank God the audio is really good and there's a bunch of uncommented matches -I suppose the stream ends with an exhibition tournament-, so I'm still watching this stream to enjoy music and voice acting...yes, KOF is the only thing that manages to distract me from studying Japanese. Survivors Under The Sky is fantastic!! I hope the OST CDs include extended versions of these tracks, with the crazy bridges and all, like SNK used to do all the way up to KOF2000.
I noticed the mode select theme actually is the instrumental version of WOOWOOWOO. As much as I like the vocal version, I like the instrumental much better.
As for bonuses, Tsutaya's Athena is...hot. Hotter than the unbearably hot weather oppressing my hometown in these days. And I'm so happy a there's so much hand drawn stuff, it makes me hope for a good amount of special edit team artworks to unlock in the gallery.
On a gameplay note, Leona has a kick followup to her Grand Saber...has she always had it in 14? Ok, here's are some of the stuff I recalled playing after the a whole day.
A lot of peeps were engrossed in the SFV and other tourneys, thus giving us a lot of time to experiment with XIV.
The overall gameplay speed is indeed slower as intended by SNK, however transiting from XIII will take little to none to adapt. This applies to combo execution as well, you will definitely need to slow down. I had trouble initially doing B&B combos.
I finally understand why peeps are saying XIV looks better in real life. Though the graphics are not as top notch as compared to Tekken 7, it improved drastically from the initial demo build. Details such as smoke (from K' iron trigger), electric sparks, etc are nicely done.
There's also changes of range of the normals. For stand close C, you will need to be really near, a little pixel of and the far version comes out.
Below are the characters that I have tried:-
Iori - C version of DP iframes have been reduced. Need to do it a bit later to anti air.
KOD- He's not called a dinosaur for no reason, he walks EXTREMELY slow, running doesn't seem to get him up close to opponent too.
Goro - He suffers from the walking speed too, but not to KOD's level. Goro players may need to adapt and change their play style in XIV?
Nelson - He plays similarly to Gai from XI. Interesting character, will need some time to play around in training mode.
Hein - Personally I'm quite disappointed with him, was expecting him to be good since his Geese's butler. Has no mix up nor good B&B from what I have played.
Terry - He may lose his XIII's C version of power wave and target combo, but he's buffed in other areas. Burn knuckles is much faster and safe on block. Think of his 98 version! His pokes are better too.
Benimaru- Dp gone for good. 236B shortcut remove too. Cancelled accidentally a few times into his new super, but that's just me.
Muimui - One the more interesting new comer. Had a lot of fun playing her. The downside is she jumps too high! An easy character to pickup. I foresee a lot of players may be picking her up.
Kim - I don't know if I'm right to say he's being nerfed. Players who are too dependable on 234BD may not get used. Have not tested the safejump setup.
Vice - Plays like the XIII version, not much changes from her.
Choi - He's only able to fly 3 times now, not sure if that's change in the EX mode. Sorry Choi fans, I played him once and never play him again.
Kula - She's not able to 236B after 236A in corner anymore! SNK, why are you removing her B&B?!
Billy Kane - I feel he's slower in this version and his 6A pushes back too much. Say bye bye to 6A spam.
Robert - Enjoyed him in this version! Mixture of 98 & XIII.
King - Prof, this is for you! She may have lost her air venoms, but she's still good! Need to utilize her vemons in max mode well. Combo wise not much changes. Have not try linking 63214B into trapshot yet.
Alright, off for KOF XIV day 2!

Chaz: Yeah there's no doubt that Kukri is inspired by Gaara from Naruto. His moves aren't copied off as far as I know because Gaara fights a lot more dynamic and makes monsters out of his sand, but that fundamental battle concept just screams of Gaara.
That said, Kukri is just a wonky character as far as his personality/quotes goes.I don't know how well he'll get translated, but he's at the level of Terry Bogard wonkyness.
Btw King Of Dinosaurs almost accidentally says "Justice Hurricane!" in the EX version of his throw. He manages to correct himself though.
No problem, I was like meh when I saw King, but a match with my friend proved otherwise. Her zoning game is there. Any with max mode in this game, she can utilize it for more damage since her EX moves launches.
quote: I can't believe how stubborn Oda can be saying KOD isn't the same as Griffon xD But I like this funny persistence of his.
Speaking of the staff, I read the other article about the 4Gamer interview -I don't know how to thank you Prof, for real- and it reminded me of what I love about classic SNK the most: their romantic vision of game development. This is what won me over as soon as I started playing the SFC port of Garou Densetsu.
Besides the silhouette, nothing else plays like Griffon. He is way too slow and misses the clothesline moves.

I know it, but is could be a consequence of going heel. I know little to nothing about wrestling, but I suppose when you change role you should change some of your signature moves as well, because you're playing a different character. Plus, Dinosaur's voice is the same s Griffon's (IMO), so the only alternative I could think of about his identity is that he's a close relative of Griffon.
Back to gameplay discussion, I'm indeed worried about KOD's speed. He's one of the most hyped characters, but a lot of people who tried him first hand found him unbearably slow, and while a Zangief-like grappler is supposed to be very slow, I understand their concern. I hope he gets tweaked in the day one patch.

Besides, I tried and gather some info about common toucan population, and I found there are a lot of them in Paraguay, so I speculated that Nelson could be from Argentina and Zarina from Paraguay because of her toucan. When I saw all the character select portraits on April 25th, I thought "she's dressed like a Brazilian flag xD", so I kinda lost hope for a team with 3 different nationalities.
Please keep in mind I'm not making a fuss about representation of country X or Y in a game, it's just that I like making pointless speculations :D
Thanks for the welcome messages!

Today we will know about South American Team nationalities!

It would be cool if each of them had a different nationality. People unfamiliar with South America may think that all countries are similar, but each of them has a very unique culture (in the case of some countries, like Brazil, even different regions of the same country are VERY different from each other), so it would be a way of highlighting the uniqueness in each of them.
That makes me sad that there isn't an Africa Team, though. That's a continent that could really benefit from having a team with each character representing one country to show that it is also diversified in a lot of ways (cultures, religions, languages, etc.). Oh well, maybe if KOF XIV succeeds, SNK can introduce such team in KOF XV? I hope so!
By the way, welcome to the board, Ribnog! It's always nice to see new people joining us and actively participating of the topics (Micky Kusanagi has contributed a lot to the conversations ever since he joined here), and it's particularly cool to see a fellow Brazilian joining the board!

I could be wrong but excessive use of ass, hip and sitting on people is probably not a legit style of capoeira. I've dubbed it "culoeira" but I admit I only came up with that after looking up the Portuguese translation of "ass" on google and I'm sure it sounds dumb and actual native speakers could think of something more clever. Anyway at this point my only question about her is what is the toucan's name? This is vital information.
As usual I'm drawn to the boxers in KoF so the more I see Nelson the more I want to play him. I don't know what it is, it's not like I have a general desire to play boxer characters (Balrog's upcoming SFV debut for example does nothing for me), it's just when they're in KoF. I had to use Vanessa whenever she was on the roster and played the hell out of Heavy D! in 98.
Oh and I am released from my obligation to play Dinosaur because as the most recent interview translated by Professor states, he is NOT Tizoc. Though I do get a kick out of the fact that in direct feed video it becomes clear that his voice is muffled by his mask. It makes me wonder if they had the voice actor wear a rubber mask while recording his voice.
My initial impression of Zarina was disappointing. Everything looked good until I saw her somewhat cute and childish personality. I thought she was going to be somewhat like Luong or a more mature young sexy adult. I was hoping the Toucan would fight along side Zarina.
I love everything about Zarina other than the flower farts and her immatureness. She does have a very good back ground,
quote:
Zarina – The savior of rain forests! She wants to raise money and awareness for the environment, and has zero issues beating up competitors in the name of nature. Zarina will dazzle opponents with her acrobatic Capoeira fighting style and is a strong member of this team. Oh, she’s also bringing along her adorable toucan friend Coco.
Which goes to my second disappointment. With this quote in mind and her fighting style, it seems she is not from another country in South America. Brazil have a huge presence of combating for the protection of nature conservancy in South America. Although, Peru also has a huge presence as well but I doubt she will be from there based on her fighting style. It seems this is a Brazil team.
I was really hoping and still hoping for Nelson and Zarina to be from places like Colombia or Venezuela. Still waiting for the main KOF 14 website to update their profiles to see the place of birth for both. Maybe they were, and then raised in Brazil with Bandeiras. Or possibly at a later age, Bandeiras met the two than influenced them to become fighters. Speaking of Bandeiras, I have a gut feeling the voice actor is someone whose first language is Portuguese. I think he has an accent when speaking in Japanese. That would be nice!

Zarina is beautiful, bubbly and farts flowers like every girl is supposed to do xD Jokes aside, she's more or less like I expected her to be, a bubbly capoeira girl. I like her design, but I don't know how much I'll play her because I've never felt comfortable with capoeira users in fighting games, which is sad because capoeira is such a great fighting style. I like her Hien Shippu Kyaku though, and I saw a move which seems to have some juggle potential. Besides, she's Colombian (even though living in Brazil), which I like, because I usually find Colombian girls to be the hottest in the world.
As for Bandeiras and Nelson, I think I've already talked enough about them, so I'll just remind that Bandeiras is impressive to me because he's a ninja and Nelson is a beast of a boxer despite his relatively slim physique, I really like the impact of his punches. He dislikes weight loss (I suppose in terms of muscles) by the way LOL. Ah, Bandeiras obviously has Andy as his punching bag of choice. I really hope there's a hilarious Andy-Mai-Bandeiras edit team artwork to unlock in the gallery.
I love their theme, it's cheerful and danceable, but I also hear a slight melancholic undertone in it...maybe it's just my inner SNK fanboy, but I feel SHA-V managed to capture the typical Brazilian saudade in this song.
Dark: there was little to no official talk about story mode -we know it takes place some years after the Ash saga, Antonov speaks of himself "the first KOF champion" and team China should have the main role or an important one anyway-, but the dialogue screens make me think about a BlazBlue pre-Chronophantasma approach: you select a team and go through its specific story, alternating between dialogue cutscenes and ridiculously easy fights.
Ah, this is the last full month of waiting for KOF14. I just felt like noticing it :D

I don't get why people expected Zarina's toucan to fight too - sure, there's the Mahamaha precedent, but toucans are hardly major birds of prey in their habitats. The devs bothering to model the bird and putting it in her portrait is kind of going the extra mile to set the tone for her even if it's of no gameplay consequence, I guess, which is the sort of charming thing SNK tends to excel at.
Still, given how much her general "mission" resembles Nakoruru's, there could at least be some interesting moments between those 2, with Nakoruru's shock at the modern world and the feeling she'd probably need to do something about it herself ("so these Greenpeace people you speak of, do they need help stabbing some people?") making her apprehensive about abandoning things to return home, she could always feel like she could pass her torch to this new girl from another continent. As for her general impact, they can't all be Xanadus and Mians, but I'm curious to see her movelist and get a feel for her flow in-game.
I also get the feeling she'd make a nice team with SF's Elena and Tekken's Christie in a future Project X Zone, not unlike the Chinese girl team of Chun-Li, Xiaoyu and Pai in PXZ2 - team Capoeira Circle or something... it's in the very least a fan art topic waiting to happen.

You're welcome ^^ I'd like that better too, but I think the lack of cutscenes in arcade mode* makes sense after all because KOFXIV is being brought on consoles without an arcade launch, like Team Ninja did with Dead Or Alive 5.
*I noticed in the E3 trailer there's a mode with a score counter...I doubt it's a mission/trial mode, my guess is that VS CPU mode is a classic arcade ladder, because time attack only states your time in the end next to your character's portrait.
I've just read an excerpt from Xiaohai's KOF14 interviews and he says in the Stunfest one that closeups are "not that great"...I'm utterly disheartened, because I actually like character models the best during super moves cinematics.
Spoiler (Highlight to view) - but I know it probably is a severe case of lack of taste and standards on my part
End of Spoiler
What's more important, a thought about jumps: I don't see anything abnormal about them anymore in the 36 character build. Maybe general speed is lower than console/Steam KOFXIII -I've just read that arcade KOFXIII is slower than its home ports-, but nothing breaks the flow, nothing slows down the general pace of the game, which I thought happened in the 24 character build instead. So, between speed adjustments and damage reduction, I think KOFXIV is already good enough, but of course I hope the full game is even better.

I think that ALX is right, the change of the jumps was a necesary change since if this game wants to suceed in an online enviroment where no matter what, will never replicate the offline experience, you need to being able of blocking jumps from reaction and not by reading alone

The timing of Ramon's animation feels a little funny in his 3D rendition. Angel's really feels like it lacks "sharpness". But King of Dinosaurs is a character so who cares.
People's Elbow aside, Angel isn't a wrestler, she reminds me a little more from MMA, bus isn't that either.
And to be fair, ramon and Tizoc Dinousaur represent different styles of wrestling, while Dino is more closer to the Puroresu Heavyweight style, ramon is closer to lucha libre/ puroresu jr heavyweight style.
I'm more curious on why these 3 characters decided to make a team, mexican pride?

I'm speechless. I won't be able to do shit with these characters, but they're just so likeable. Their theme is one of the best ones -now that we've had a decent listening to the intro I absolutely love that part-, and so is their stage, which really shines in the close-ups in the beginning of the trailer (yes, my old complaints about stages are fading away)
Looks like Angel has her infamous (un)chained style intact...maybe her inputs took the Nelson route and were streamlined? She doesn't seem to show off EX moves in the trailer, and that makes my suspicion that she kept her style with simpler inputs stronger. I love her "...onna no ko!" line!!
Ramon is fantastic, so dynamic, I like his new jumpsuit even more now that I see it in full and his Climax is so fun to watch. I actually feel like booting up KOF2000 and putting him in the lab for at least half an hour. I could get compelled to try him seriously in all the other KOFs he's been in. VIVA MEXICO!!
KOD? When I deemed his costume as "ugly ass" in February I actually meant I was afraid the majority of the FGC would destroy him, especially because criticism against KOF14 was even harsher than now...I'd never bet such a peculiar design may be received so well in the West, and I'm so glad about it. He really fits the slow but insanely powerful archetype, I just hope players' complaints about him being too slow even for the kind of fighter he is and he's good to go. I actually like his MAX Zet's Met's -thinking of who Dinosaur really is LOL- more than his Climax, it's a fantastic take on his good ol' Big Fall. I remember how I was kinda nervous at the possibility that KOD may not fall on the ground in a flashy way after smashing his opponent in the camera when SNK kept the end of the move hidden from trailers, but these guys outdid themselves. You can tell from his moves they had lots of fun designing him.

This is great - and works indirectly as a step toward the Sega/SNK crossover of my dreams, even if in the same day the same game announced a collaboration with the wrong SNK (Shingeki no Kyojin).
I wonder if she's getting special tag team attacks with anyone, I love those in DoA, even if tag team mode doesn't usually get a lot of exposure, being an unpopular format for competitions.
BTW Professor, you might want to adjust the timestamp on the video in the news page, since it points to the finals in the video- this bring you closer to the SNK outfits, then has the aquaplus stuff, then has the Mai video reveal. The audience reaction makes it worth it over the official annoucement video.
Speaking of videos, Oda's presentation in the Japan Expo, in French: part 1 and part 2.
The highlight is some Zarina play. Her stance is way more subdued than one usually sees in Capoeira, that that tends to make dealing with collision boxes a mess, so it's understandable to an extent.

I saw the Japan Expo panel, good job SNK on making me literally die to play KOF14. My only gripe with the panel is that Mature's Climax wasn't shown, they're definitely waiting for a KOF Station episode to show it fully IMO.
As for the game in its entirety, I'm just a bit disappointed that characters only have one in-game winpose -except Benimaru and maybe Shun'ei-, but it's just me nitpicking, other than that I'm ecstatic about KOFXIV. I was kinda hoping for old BGMs and knowing that you can trigger them with some edit teams makes me so happy, although I love the default BGMs.
I noticed teams in the 2P Versus icon have changed, Fatal Fury VS South Town instead of FF VS K', nice touch.
As for Zarina's stance, I know a proper capoeira stance would be more appealing to a lot of people, but I think her stance fits her character better. She's dancing samba, right?
EDIT: there's a free KOF14 dynamic theme in the European PS Store!! It's not even restricted to Plus users. It's set in Neo Esaka, it plays the intro of some acid remix of Esaka? (I can't recognize which version, it may be a new recording) and Hein's pose is fantastic xD
My only gripe is that the theme is called Neo Esaka Theme instead of The King Of Fighters XIV Theme, which may make it a little hard to find it when browsing the store without being logged but since it's new it easily shows up as soon as you go to the themes page of any EUR PS Store from your console.
Sure it's not so exciting as having that gorgeous hand drawn art -I'm kinda tempted to buy each and every Japanese KOF14 theme if some of the pre-order thingies actually become available in the Jap PS Store-, but I'm happy to put a little bit of KOFXIV in my PS4 before it's out.

Nightmare Geese is fantastic. I've always liked this concept, but I think zombiefying him and giving him a spectral voice makes him even better. One could argue that Nightmare Geese should have a different moveset instead of just being an alternate costume, but it's better than nothing. The Team South Town theme is really nice, they went the safe way -playing the iconic Geese them on an electric guitar without changing scale- and I like it a lot. Stupid-ass title like always

After lots of thinking, my only two gripes about the move sets are that Geese doesn't have his legendary Deadly Rave -I know SNK wanted to streamline movesets, but it could stay as an automatic Ranbu like in 98UM, good thing the super Reppuken is cool though ^^- and Maxima's Bunker Buster seems gone for good -for simplification purposes as well?-, other than that I find there was a lot of work on movesets, to give each character a chance, although I admit some have tons of moves compared to the rest and it may seem unfair.
Gang-Il's Hangetsuzan is aerial only as I suspected from the trailer, and he has tons of follow-ups to his Hakikyaku. His chances to get in my team in case I don't feel comfortable enough with Shun'ei have drastically increased (not that they were low before).
It's funny how Xanadu's Climax is called The Wisdom, it fits his psychopatically enlightened state after beating his opponent to a bloody pulp. HELLMAKER!!

I think this is a good move to start DLC. They have the ability to make more like Geese. Orochi Iori and Leona first comes to mind. Wouldn't be surprised if they have a MOTW costume for Terry. KOFXI'S has another collaboration in the form of Brave Frontier x THE KING OF FIGHTERS. With the announcement of the digital copy, makes me wonder if they exceeded expectations with the pre-order physical copies. I think the numbers are looking good.

So Geese's iconic motion is modified but Angel's moves are still as counterintuitive as ever? I had to read an FAQ by Toxico just to figure out what the hell was going on with that girl when she first came out so I hope something similar is published for her KoF14 version.
It's odd that Kensou has yet to be shown. That's not a character I would use for a dramatic, last-second reveal since I don't think he has that big a fan base. Heck, his own teammates seem somewhat indifferent to him.

DoA5 may not get huge tournament numbers but that doesn't seem to have hurt the game in the least, especially since the creators didn't bet everything on that one approach to the game. I honestly hope that the people running SF5 are looking at the examples set by DoA5 and other games that have successfully kept themselves relevant by changing themselves over time. quote: Okay, I have this bad habit of not talking about my theories/doubts in advance (except cases like yesterday when I said a little piece of Athena's latest vocal song may slip in the Psycho Soldier trailer)...I had two doubts about the South Town trailer: 1) What if their theme isn't the same as the track heard in the Nightmare Geese DLC trailer? 2) since Billy and Hein actually got more exposure than Geese because they've been playable for a long time, could Geese end up as the 3rd character in the trailer? That could be obvious, but still, I was a little surprised that both of those things happened. Their theme vaguely reminds me of Geese Ja, a theme I really love, and I like how Geese was saved for last. His Raging Storm is kinda like Rock's but more massive, great job on this effect. I also like his rekkas.
A bit sad that Geese's voice doesn't sound like Kong Kuwata to me, but I get that SNK made a drastic seiyuu cast overhaul and the new seiyuu actually put a lot of passion and effort in conveying characters' personalities.
I think Geese is still Kong Kuwata, although Billy's VA sounds different to me.
Btw quick trivia, Kong probably took his nickname from Mr.T in the classic TV series "The A-Team". The character played by Mr.T had a name that's too hard to for the Japanese to pronounce (BA Baracus) so the producers renamed him as "Kong". And if you recall, Kuwata had a little bit of a Mr.T going on in his younger days.
Oh and totally off-topic, Murdock was called "Monkey".

Thank you for the heads up Prof ^^ The Bund is FANTASTIC. My favorite stage hands down (I take advantage of this post to correct myself, the Bund is a walk along a river, not along the sea).
Alice is sort of a fusion between Terry and Sakura with rekkas to me;
I didn't like Kensou's restyling at all when I saw him in the offscreen photos, but looking at him in the stream he quickly grew on me, and I also like that his voice sounds (stereotypically?) Chinese;
Meitenkun is serious troll material, just imagine an Alice/Meitenkun/Sylvie team xD and his style is a variation of Tung, which I love;
Angel and Geese are impressive like always, nothing to add...except I don't like that Angel's voice sounds less irritating to me, which I don't like because her 2002 voice had so much more trollng value IMO...
It's official, there will be a shit-ton characters competing for a place between Kyo and Iori in my main team.
Ore no...kachi da!!

Gang-il is like a copy of Kim Dong Hwan minus the electricity. Even walks like him. Lol
Some of the new characters look great! South America Team has a huge potential of becoming my new favorite team!
Not a big fan of Alice from what I could see of her, though. I'd rather have her replaced by Yuri in the Women Team and have the Art of Fighting Team completed by either Marco Rodriguez or Karman Cole (although I doubt any of them will ever return as actual characters in a fighting game - at least they got stage cameos in XIII...).
As for the graphics, some characters look quite good, while others look weird. But I think all the stages look great so far!
I can be any person in the world... maybe I'm this person right in front of you... maybe I'm not.

I think Mian is one of those that looks great and animates beautifully. I love her moves and fighting style. It bugs me that I have seen this fighting style in another video game but can not think which. No one is using Love Heart yet. :(

First of all, I appreciate that the demo is unconditionally free and comes about a month before the full game is released. When the 7th generation of consoles started I hoped each and every game, retail or not, got a completely free demo 30 days or so before release, but my dream got severely crushed. Good thing this kind of plan still gets put in action sometimes.
Back to KOF14, I had bet on a demo roster with the same characters as the PlayStation Experience build plus Terry (or maybe Mai just for fanservice purposes) when the names weren't known, but I'm glad I was proven wrong because this roster is a great blend of veterans and newcomers. Besides the mandatory Kyo and Iori , everything is different from my guess, different in a way I like. Of course I'm happy like a child on Christmas because there's Shun'ei xD
A question: I've seen lots of people demanding a rollback based netcode...is rollback the one and only way to go for fighting games netcode?
There's so much freaking KOFXIV stuff on Twitch, I must carefully plan how to split my archive watching activity through the days...and maybe there are more streams coming :D

There's a lot of debate on this. In general, Rollback seems to be the best method of netcode but only when the programmer knows how to implement it correctly and also do good supplemental coding for the rollback. Also, it's useless if players are distant from each other / lag is too huge.
Otherwise, rollback can end up being an experience that's even worse than the contemporary input-delay netcode.
Here's an example of my experience when playing online in my local region, both players being below 30ms ping:
Skullgirls(Rollback) Very smooth and plays perfectly. The ideal implementation of rollback code in a fighting game.
SFV(Rollback) One player will experience a silk-smooth gameplay while the other player can end up experiencing a choppy game where everything feels like Jojo's Diavolo on a King Crimson frenzy. There's no reason why this should be happening in a local region match in Japan, but it does. A typical example of bad modern rollback netcode.
KOF13(Input Delay) Very laggy. Every jump feels like you have glue on your shoes. A typical example of a bad, outdated netcode.
Dengeki Climax(Input Delay) Slightly laggy. Enough to make combos harder to execute. A typical example of a bad, outdated netcode.
Guilty Gear Xrd(Input Delay) 2 Frames of lag at local play isn't all too bad. It makes reactions a bit harder but doesn't kill the overall gaming experience. No lag would be ideal, but considering all things, it's good enough for online play.

You're welcome ^^ I'm actually more surprised at the amount of CG than at its quality, I thought it was just gonna be the Antonov Intro and the "wounded Shun'ei" scene, kinda like BBCT (the only BB where I've completed story mode till now), where you only get actual motion pictures for the intro and the prelude to the final confrontation. My theory, as naive as it is, is that they only outsourced CGs and made character models in house. But as you say, SNK's ways are beyond human understanding :D
As for the demo, it's safe to assume the available stages are Neo Esaka, Church, Ring and training...I wanted the factory so that I could train to that gorgeous saxophone ;_; I wonder if the training stage has its own theme, or the game plays the theme of one of the two characters on screen...

quote: Love Heart is fantastic. I like her vertical Shoryuken because it reminds me of Iori's -HP version looks higher than his though-, and I'm sure her rushing uppercut is a launcher, but it looks like you need to test her in training mode a bit to follow it up properly. Her sword slashes could be an option in my opinion, can't wait to try it first hand. Her Climax comes right from the "final battle" in one of the Sky Love pachi I guess, so cool. I'd love to see full cheated playthroughs of those things.
This channel has a huge amount of Sky Love videos - not understanding Japanese means I miss a lot of the context, but there's more than enough there to get a feel for the setting and for Love Heart as a character. i can't help but wonder what the devs would have done with that if their assignment had more to do with regular videogames than with pachislot.
quote:
Xanadu looks solid and dangerous, but for some reason I can't write about him so much as I wrote about Love. I'll put a lot of effort to figure him out in my first KOFXIV days. Gojira I love your Katamari theory about him, his vision of light looks quite...cosmic indeed :D
It'd be fun his Xanadu's "enlightnment" moments during his Climax had something to do with glimpsing whatever the final boss is bringing forth.
It's also nice to see that in the story trailer several characters from different teams appear together, since that's unusual in KoF history, leading one to usually wonder whose endings actually count or who was actually there when the important events happened.
Nakoruru's mention of hatred and lost souls during that final boss entrance, along with the leak's mention that the final boss could bring forth characters from other worlds, makes me wonder if the likes of K9999 or other characters that KoF left behind might get referenced before or after the final boss fight.
'Twas a nice, eventful weekend, but I'm mostly glad the SNK devs got to see people enjoying the product of their work and appanretly had some fun while at it - it was messed up how they remained absent from EVO even when XIII was an official game at the event.
Looking forward to see the panel video Atlus is supposed to post on Youtube, and the next Station videos.

Sibarraz: I suppose it's gonna be the usual way, bosses occupy single slots
The demo has been available in the Australian PS Store for some hours, too bad I didn't even have the time to create an AU PSN account when the news spread. Right now I'm downloading it with my European account. I won't even be able to start it because I got a bad headache, but after a decent sleep I'll be able to enjoy it :D
EDIT: (absolutely superficial) demo impressions!!
While I was downloading it, I had a nice surprise: somebody had uploaded on his own Youtube all the tracks included in the demo, and Saxophone Under The Moon is one of them. It means one of the two chosen characters' theme plays in training stage!! I'm so happy about it I've only chosen Iori as my training dummy till now, because, after that KOF13 nonsense, it's your dummy who determines the theme.
Graphics are better in person to me like they are to some other people, but characters aren't zoomed in enough to me compared to SFV. Movement on details like Shun'ei's rosary look nicer to me.
Until now, I've only tried each character's moves in training and completed the tutorial, which basically is an interactive manual, but I still find worthy because of Antonov spouting Mr Satan tier nonsense all the time about how his techniques are immensely superior to any other character . Too bad the tutorial isn't voiced at all, I couldn't wait to hear that absurdly Russian accented Japanese :D I'd rather listen to I'm The King Of Fighters Type 2 than Yappari Esaka in the tutorial but oh well. I love Yappari, but it doesn't fit the tutorial IMO.
You can read unplayable characters' movelists in the demo, which I find rather convenient, and you can see any character portrait in member select, what a tease.
And now I'm off to the last part on my playaround, some versus matches against the CPU. Tomorrow I'll get serious.
Ore no...kachi da!!

Loona: I tried to look up some info but I'm afraid there are no big news. As stupid as it sounds, KOF98OL's Japanese launch is one of the reasons why I started studying Japanese a month ago.
Romance and Frionel are playing the KOF14 demo!! As a fan of both, I'm happy :D
Team China trailer way earlier than I expected O_O
Micky's nonsense KOFXIV demo ramblings Vol. 2:
How could I forget one of the main reasons I'm so happy about the demo is that I can see if Shun'ei is good for me a whopping month before the full game comes out? Turns out I love his mid ranged projectiles and his normals. His far C is unique in that it's insanely fast and you can chain two of them without the least bif of effort. One of them only dishes 40 damage points if I remember well, but even like that I suspect it's a dangerous normal (I will verify this next time I play the demo, my memory could be playing tricks on me). So, my first impression of him was right, I will use him a lot in the full game. Can't wait to see how he holds up against Gang Il for a place in my main team.
I saw some videos showing that KoD has insane armor on several attacks, that may make up for his utter lack of speed.
I'm reading conflicting reports on Mai, some say she's been vastly improved from 13 while some say the total opposite.
Sylvie's backward jump look so low I mistook it for her hop in the beginning xD Her animations are so unique, a fantastic character.
Nelson looks very solid by consensus, I'm happy he's getting lots of love because I immediately saw him as a potential fan favorite when the Athena/Luong/Nelson teaser came out.
As for the free theme, I think it's way too crowded...why weren't characters distributed between the three portions of the PS4 dashboard?
Ore no...kachi da!!
