..... Now, speaking of, the move list looks atrocious. When they switched to 3D I thought that they did so so that they can add back the moves that they couldn't afford to draw in XIII, and seeing K' or Iori that have pretty much all of the cheese that they could ever want to; but now that we see how the characters other than the pretty poster boys getting either no adds or getting gimped to the extreme, it's obvious that I was being overly optimistic. Looking at the characters that do have tons of moves, it's obvious that this movelist reveal is naturally not the type that leaves things hidden for the player to discover, ah.

I was quite surprised to see Chin, one of the characters that changes the most from game to game, retained his entire movelist from KOF13 intact.
I don't quite understand the strategy here... I thought almost no one from the KOF13 team remained, and it's not like this game looks or feels like 13 in any way.
Why take 13 as a base instead of 97, 98 or 02?

It's mainly two reasons, and this applies to much other existing sequels out there :

1 - As much as they wouldn't like to admit, the current version is widely well known and still broadly played world wide.
2 - They don't want to screw the current fanbase / customers, who have wasted the last like 5 years of the lives to play the game as accurately as possible; so they want to make the transition for them easy and that they won't feel that their practice was wasted (alternatively, the reason why they are not aiming at players that are playing older games is because those guys are going to stay on "their game(s)", even if a new game is 100% aimed at them; this is something that history has proven again and again (the UMs, for example)).

I beg to differ. Considering the recently released movelist for XIV Chin shows that he no longer has his two stances and all follow-ups... He's lost over half his moves. No stance means: no command crouch, no command normal Throw, no quickie punch, no follow-up after overhead into quickie punch, no stance cancels (Far C, dx2+BD).

He's lost all his technical stuff basically.

You can't see it in the video since it fades out, but from what I've been told the Yuri Climax is actually a joke on Dan's Ultra from USF4. She does the ranbu, then looks towards the screen with her thumb up.

well, if you only look at special moves yes...but 13 don't have neutral jump normals and the majority of far version of normals. This makes 14 much closer to older games than 14.

As there's no "drive cancel", be it in max mode or out, it specifically makes the game closer to pre-2002 kofs. If anything, it looks like 2000 with no assists or armor mode

I had already caught the Dan parody vibe -parody of a parody of a plagiarism or something like that...this story makes me go WTF all the time xD-, but thank you Prof for telling me about her "yoyutchi", I'm so glad SNK keeps going all out on it :D Besides, I know her butt slap is a lifetime trademark of her, but could it be a reference to the censored intro of Mika's Critical Art in Yuri's Climax as somebody speculated on Twitter?

On to Hein, he moves a bit like Oswald in my opinion, which I think is good because I like Oswald's design a lot.

I saw your article about Ogura's artworks and words aren't enough to express my joy. SNK is serious about hand drawn artwork. I know it's not the same as having in-game 2D sprites, but they proved me wrong about my fear of not seeing hand drawn stuff for this game at least. And Ogura is born the same day and month as me LOL

Shun'ei are you going to do that ora ora thing

Apparently Hein is popular with the female audience. His stances do resemble Oswald, he's most likely related in some way. His movelist still bothers me though, considering all his moves are named after chess pieces and chess terms but no sign of "check" or "checkmate" anywhere. Sure it might have been too on the nose but at the same time it seems like a horrendous oversight.

Chin was one of the characters that needed ultra specific match experience to accurately beat otherwise you are in for a damn rough ride (similar to Yuri in the same game, or Chan / Choi in most of the other games). You can find plenty of footage of great players getting beat up because they don't have the proper "vs Chin experience" even if the opponent is lesser in skill (some Haregoro and Misterio matches come to my mind). (And objectively speaking, Chin is not ubberly strong even with that detail, rather; it becomes incresingly difficult to to even score hits once the other player has a defined "vs Chin" gameplan so it's a sink or swim type of feature that Chin players should aim to nulify).

It's pretty obvious that they were trying to get rid out of that. They probably don't want to give new players the feeling that someone picked an overly utterly complex player and then defeated them giving no room for rebutals or something, sight.

I have a feeling we're getting some of the KOF Station stuff after ever four team trailers (since there are four episodes planned so far).

At long last!!

As for the Combo Breaker stuff, I didn't watched it immediately because I'm trying to read Jojo as fast as I can (I had some serious slowdowns for various reasons) and I didn't feel like going through another Kyo-Iori mess, but yesterday I watched the first minutes and well, there's variety since it's an exhibition. I thought that stream was the tournament.

I noticed Kyo can cancel df+D on the second hit even outside Max Mode, I really like this trick.

Mikel: I really think your guess is right. When SNK says "soon", they usually mean the next trailer day of choice for the game they're talking about.
Besides, since you sound quite interested in voice actors, I forgot to say after the Fatal Fury team gameplay I have a strong feeling Joe's CV isn't Hiyama anymore. The new seiyuu sure worked his ass a lot to get in character, and he did a good job IMO -I think the same about Kyo's new CV-, but I feel it isn't the same. I like the new voices a lot, but it's sad to state we lost some of the most iconic voices. I'm definitely waiting for an official CVs list, I hope we don't have to wait for the full game to come out in order to read CVs in the credits.

I feel the same way as you, though I have favoritism towards the new CV's since I have a feeling that they're anime seiyuu this time around. Something I've wanted to fully see since KOF XIII.

Like, I've heard people speculate Tomoaki Maeno as Kyo, and if that's the case, then we'll get to hear how Kyo will sound with an anime seiyuu voicing him instead of Masahiro Nonaka.

I've heard speculating Tomokazu Sugita just because he voiced Kyo in the Japanese dub of the U.S. movie xD I looked for the Jap dub on Youtube to get a hold of his performance, but I found nothing...is the Japanese copyright police so strict even about such shit?

EDIT: KOFXIV demo at Japan Expo!! I wonder what build it is...I wanna get my hopes high for once and say it's gonna be the 36 chara one, since the Japan stores tour will be long gone by July.

She's still borrowing moves from other fighters -this time Dan Hibiki gets the honor of an homage- so at least that part of her character remains intact.

My favorite trailer so far! Even though I'd prefer Yuri still teamed up with King and Mai (and without the possibility to tear off her clothes), she looks cool and her "Super Saifa" (or whatever it's called) is awesome! And Ryo and Robert look cool as well (I could never imagine Robert with a mustache, but somehow it worked for him).

It will be hard for me to choose between AOF Team and Yagami Team in this game... although the new South American team may win my heart over when their trailer is revealed.

I hope SNK hasn't returned to the pre-April 25th time schedule for KOF14 trailers ^^;

I love the new stage -I was waiting for the usual inside Kyokugen dojo stage because I thought that concept art was for the Villains team, but I have nothing to complain about- and the theme is much better than when it was heavily muffled by all the talk and arcade stick noises in the Nemo stream, but this trailer feels to me like it had less gameplay than the others...the reality is that the Yuri focus is so blatant it confused me xD

I wonder if there's already some schedule for the KOF Station episodes -besides the little "soon" banner- and the two remaining non-team trailers...

Please please have the intros for backgrounds in-game too. After Neo Esaka I was worried that backgrounds will suck . However SNK showed they really know background stuff. This one and the Aquarium one along with Geese its top notch. I also love Another world one . Sixteen plus two is really generous and impressive. Also I love how every background capture the theme.

For Yuri I usually hate when the voice changes but this was not cringe worthy for me. For the gameplay I love not just she got back also have a super of it. Or the move was there in XIII too? Why does it feel like the move is back? Anyway I think I will have fun with this Yuri like I did with 97 and 99 ones.

If this game would have like team members in the background, character specific intros (I thought they had it within the first trailer. I hope its not just story mode exclusive), taunts and background intros that would be perfect.

I hate that the camera focus on the winner side when time out happens. KOD has the fantastic time out pose with wiggling tail and it would be shame camera focus on winner and we miss it.

I took a look at the Japanese trailer running time and it's indeed shorter than the Yagami and Fatal Fury trailers -the American one looks longer because of the ESRB screen and the "pre-order the premium edition" and PlayStation outro in the end-, so my impression was right after all, the actual trailer is shorter. It was to be expected anyway, since we had already seen tons of Ryo and Robert footage in demo tournaments. SNK must have thought "people who feel like watching the trailers have seen a shitload of Ryo and Robert action, let's focus on Yuri fanservice"

I don't think, KOF is way less popular than SF so I really don't think we'll see such a change in the full game.

Sigh, these demo sessions are so depressing for me, just a couple pictures from the stores and some sneaky phone footage...I can't wait for the 36 char build to get to FGC events and tournaments.

Keykakko has just uploaded 38 min of footage of the 36 chars build. Just keep in mind that this is footage of people lab-ing stuff until time out, not competing.

And Gvgkid just maked a remix of kim theme too.

edit: more 13' with ikari warriors team, credits to @I_K_A_R_I. Their theme "Survivors Under the Sky" can be heard at 1:13 and 8:48, in "Heidern Fleet" Stage.

So, a decent amount of footage from the Japanese tour is showing up at last, I'm very happy about it ^_^

The Ikari theme sounds a little more upbeat than most of their previous themes, like SNK wanted to recreate the feel of Rumbling In The City writing a new melody instead of slightly editing it (which is the case of Yappari Esaka instead).

I don't know if it's just the devices used to record the videos, but color saturation looks higher to me in this build of the game, and it looked to me the same in yesterday's SNK social network screenshots. I definitely could live with the bland colors from before, but for the sake of the game's reputation I really hope they fixed them for real.

Gang-Il is fantastic. The idea of fusing elements from each Kim's style -except Jhun Hoon if I remember well- in one character is brilliant. I think he's gonna be in my main team in place of Kim if Shun'ei doesn't turn out to be my cup of tea.

I had a good laugh at how his pectorals move in the intro of his Climax super xD Such good memories from the ending of his Climax..I definitely am one of those waiting for such an effect to come back to Kim's ultimate special, but seeing another character doing it is just as good for me, even without the huge shining phoenix soaring from the last kick.

I'm looking forward to play KOFXIV more and more after each trailer...

Store specific preorder bonuses -mostly themes but there are also posters/tapestries
Licensed KOF14 HRAP.V Hayabusa -I'm really happy SNK granted my wish of a partnership with Hori, but why did they merely changed the artwork? They could change the case color to make it unique...
U.S. movelist page updated to match the 36 chara build roster

And now, back to the Kim team for a useless rambling on their music theme xD

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
About the theme, before the 24 characters demo showed us this song is tied to the hotel stage I had always thought it was gonna be the Team China theme, because it gives me a "hope" vibe, a sense of a hero going all out against evil. Still, it fits Kim's team, even though Kim's main goal isn't "JUSTICE AND REFORMING!!!" anymore, because his sense of justice is referenced at least once in the game: when you beat Kim with Iori and Kim is the third character, Iori's victory quote is something like "your stories of justice make me wanna puke

The subs were done by the Japanese KOF player Dune and I assisted on supervision/rewrites. Yeah it would've been better if the video was fully subbed, but it's certainly a step into the right direction-- SNK is starting to discover there's life outside of asia!

You're involved in the subtitles? Wow that's a nice surprise ^^ Thanks to Dune and thank you Professor for your work!!

I like how music is tied to stages in training mode according to the build played in KOF Station. I had some moments in KOF13 training sessions where I wished I had some degree of BGM choice without resorting to USB drive playback ^^;

Another thing that catched my attention is how SNK clearly states they didn't want Shun'ei's design to adhere to KOF standards. Judging from the amount of fanarts characters like him and Sylvie are getting, I guess their dare is somewhat paying off after all.

Thanks for helping out with all the hard work! In the past SNK international writings have read like the Japanese was translated into some second language nobody knew and that was converted into English. While it was quaint I appreciate the effort to communicate in a more precise manner.

The E3 trailer cranks up color saturation quite a bit...I'd dare to say it's the opposite excess of what we're used to about KOFXIV trailers. But I bet most people would be happier with colors set like this if this setting made it to the full game.

There's Xanadu in the order select screen in the trailer. Can't wait for today's team gameplay, not only because I've been curious about what Xanadu's fighting style could be from the beginning, but also because I can't wait to see the reaction of the French KOF community, which already have given him a huge memetic relevance with jokes like "member select where all the characters are Xanadu", "he'll be banned from tournament play because he's overpowered as shit" and "Xanadu is Saitama's sensei". I'm in for some silly laughs xD

E3 livecast interview with Oda - accoding to a tweet by frionel, the guy translating for Oda is Adam Laatz, who's apparently been handling western relations for the company for the past few years.

They seem to put quite some focus on the 6-player online mode, and apparently teams are randomized, but so far it's not clear to me if matches are played in parallel (3 matches starting at the same time, which would minimize downtime for most players in a lobby) or one at a time (which is more interesting if you want to watch, but might mean some people don't get to play if the player(s) that precede(s) them in their team end(s) up winning the match).

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up.
KOF14 plays like a KOF game but feels different right off the bat so I wouldn't be surprised if you guys didn't perform-- did you get a chance to play the game? Only the three usual guys were on stream iirc, so.

The matches should be played the way they normally are, in sequence. Otherwise it defeats the reason for the spectators and the "Gaya SE" system.

I wonder if the shuffle mode is optional. Anyway it works like this:
- Up to 12 players can join the lobby.
- 6 of them can enter the match.
- The shuffle will randomly group them into a set of 3 players per team.

Also, Just Defence in KOF14 only decreases guard meter reduction and gives additional power meter. It doesn't have any of the other bonuses from MOW like zero chip damage. Not sure why that was mentioned in WNF.

Yes, a XIII style color edit would be fantstic. KOF13 is the only game where I've ever bothered with the color edit feature, it's so easy to use but it gives you endless possibilities. Right today I've seen a picture of Andy colored to look like Doctrine Dark from SFEX!! Such a mind blowing edit.

I had forgot to spend a couple words about Antonov. I love his overly stereotyped Russian accent and his over the top appearance LOL. Oda stated in KOF Station he's actually a likeable guy...will he turn out to be a benevolent tournament organizer who gets the event disrupted by this edition's evil guy?

Famitsu stream of the 36 characters build tomorrow, Nemo will be there

Team Villains confirmed for the upcoming team gameplay SNK had clumsily tried to hide the team trailers order by changing the sequence in that strip in the game site homepage, but I guess all of us remember the old order :P Battlepage's elixir made it clear that even the movelist PDFs are numbered according to the order teams are getting their gameplay trailers.

EDIT: Meitenkun's outfit looks fantastic. And judging from the picture of Shun'ei and Meitenkun in the first page, the game will include more than one pre-rendered CG cutscene.

This guy is disturbing...the cradling throw is creepier than his eyes IMO. I thought he was bound to infuse his fists with a dark aura and have a proper martial arts fighting style, given his rather exotic appearance, but SNK went for a clumsy yet brutal style. I guess it's better this way.

Chang and Choi are good as well, I especially like Chang's Max ranbu+Climax combo, the Climax compliments the ranbu perfectly. The stage is just as creepy as Xanadu, and I like it a lot. The BGM ramps up the disturbing factor another notch. Great job.

Besides, we are now sure each team has a unique stage. Has a post-CPS2 fighter ever had a stage for each character/team before KOFXIV? I don't remember, maybe Justice Gakuen and SFEX. It's not vital by any means, but I find it a nice touch.

Totally with you, Xanadu looks disturbing enough. I'm totally not gonna touch this creepy new character. His fight style and movesets are meh... I will stick with the cool characters instead.

Hahaha, yeah, I wasn't sure until now that SNK still had its old touch in terms of character design, but Xanadu cements it. It's refreshing that every single new character isn't stylish and suave or cute and trendy. All the way back to 94 I was never the biggest fan of Chang and Choi, but seeing a character as out there as Xanadu made the cut makes me incredibly happy. I particularly enjoyed his 'come into the light' finisher. I'll be curious to know what his backstory is!

The urge to splurge and just get a PS4 for this is overwhelming...

Xanadu is an amazing design. The fact that there are 19 new characters is my main reason for wanting to play this.

EDIT: I just noticed that it says "BREAKER!" under Southtown Jail on the back of Chang's overalls. Nice touch.

Totally not what I expected. I imagined him as an mean and evil psychological nut case. Instead he is a crazy and wild psychological nut case. His move does turn me a bit off but it fits perfectly for him. Nothing more than me loving the presentation of the trailer. The BGM reminds me of a 94/95 Kim team vibe in one. I really want to know the story even more now. The stage is awesome and probably my favorite so far. Still waiting for that night time China stage though.

i was not sure what to expect of xanadu, but he ended up beeing a perfect match for chang and choi. Violent and crazy, yet in a cartoonish funny way.

Some people were saying that he might be inspired by 1940 version of woody woodpecker, with the dark circle around the eyes, spaced teeths and violet/crazy mannerism.

A comment in youtube said that the baby carry grab was actually used in inspector willoughby/woodpecker chap against a bear, but i can't confirm this.

Some people find Xanadu kinda alike the wrestler Boogeyman, and in my opinion his masked face may look a bit alike Xanadu's face from certain angles.

The Niconico stream is over, it was just him trying out each move of the 36 build new entries plus Clark, KOD and Sylvie. Sylvie's Climax is now an Ash-style slow lightning ball, traveling in a slightly wavy fashion instead of flying horizontally. Could it be a good tool for dramatic comebacks?

Venator Ballare is a fantastic, powerful song. The emotion I felt listening to it is indescribable. Too bad Nemo never chose Heidern Fleet, I wanted to listen to Survivors Under The Sky as well :(

Shun'ei has two victory poses, I managed to see the second one briefly. It's recognizable because his demon hands don't show up. He's the second character with 2 poses as far as I've seen, the first is Benimaru (I don't remember what's the stream, but he was starting his "Thank You!" pose once). Chin's pose is as hilarious as it gets, he goofily runs in circle x'D

I would not have thought to associate Xanadu with Woody Woodpecker but now that you mention it he does have a cartoonish sense of gentle giant violence to him.

links still use the hold system from previous kofs and anime like blazblue.

Game is trying to be more accessible on a gameplay level, IE not as long of combos, removal of loops etc.

Supposedly (again, not 100% sure) if there are future dlc characters, they'll be free. Cosmetic DLC will still cost money but characters won't (if there even are any that are coming).

That's about it from what I've picked up here and there from talking with people at the show.

For those who didn't catch the interview with KOFXIV's producer at WNF:

On the netcode:
- He has been looking at the complaints against XIII's console netcode from day one and keeping all of them in mind
- The reception for XIII's Steam version netcode has been positive in general so they are building on top of what they learned there
- They are putting a lot of effort into making the netcode solid day 1 and are prepared to act quickly to fix any issues post launch.
- The 3v3 online party battle mode will have 12 player lobbies.

On DLC (characters, stages, music, costumes etc.):
- They aren't holding anything back for the initial release, we are getting the full game day 1.
- They haven't even started thinking about DLC yet. If they do decide to do some then we will have to wait a while since they will be creating it from scratch.

On Just Defending:
- They spent a lot of time balancing it in such a way that it doesn't disrupt the normal flow of gameplay
- In its initial implementation it had too much impact so they toned it down
- They took both offline competitive play and online play into consideration when balancing it

God knows how uneasy I get whenever the thought of how KOF14's netcode will be comes across my mind...fingers crossed.

The "no DLC characters unless we make them from scratch" thing looks obvious to me, they're a small developer and they've already worked on 50 characters for 2 years. It's gonna be hard for Vanessa fans...I almost never use her, but the impression Nelson gave me is that of a "punches-only, simplified Angel" more than a Vanessa replacement. I kinda feel for them because Andy is one of my subs and I was quite sad at his absence in 2003 and XI.

All in all, SNK sounds serious in making a solid game. I really hope everything goes for the better.

Ah, I wanted to make it clear that even though Xanadu's fighting style isn't what I expected, he's the best new character design in KOFXIV in my opinion. Not my favorite, but the best if I must give an unbiased opinion. And his personal details are so well thought: "proteins" as his favorite food may mean he ingests raw nutrients instead of eating standard food, his "fusion" hobby may hint at the creepiest things if the seams on his forehead are of any indication -I highly doubt such a psycho enjoys fusing metals...- and making up sports tournaments in his mind is just the icing on the cake. Don't know what to think about him disliking...big rip? Is he interested in studying the possible fate of the universe? I'm unsure whether the Japanese writer intended to say "big rip" or "big lip(s)"...

After the first playable build, most players didn't liked the game, so what's going on now?

KOF14 plays like a KOF game but feels different right off the bat so I wouldn't be surprised if you guys didn't perform-- did you get a chance to play the game? Only the three usual guys were on stream iirc, so.

We did get a chance to play the game but not as much as we would like and definitely didn't have a Dev unit to practice on. The urge to *try* to display someone other than Iori/Kim/Kyo/Luong/K' reflects on (and I'll speak for myself) my performance lol. It's all good though.

It would have been nice if we had a station to practice/warm up on just for the exhibition (waiting 5-6 hours daily, to play one set, on a new game, sucks), but I understand that they had to have all the resources dedicated to the general public to display their games

After all these months it still sounds like it starts off with "Sunday!" to me. The continutation of the theme in the latest trailer makes it sound a lot better overall.

Holy cripes, that's worse than the Tokyo exhibit. I wonder how WNF was.

quote:

From what I've talked with Romance and a few others, the overall feedback seems to be a lot more positive than before.

Back with the 24 character build at Stunfest there were complaints that the game was slow and damage was high. Some moves have been tweaked around since then, which might be the reason why we haven't heard negative reviews on the 36 character build.

The graphics are still something that SNK needs to improve even leaving aside the modeling (for example Kim's clothing looks so plastic compared to previous entries). That's an adgenda they'll need to work in future KOF releases. For now it's probably better just hoping that the game will come out with no delays caused by Sony's ratings and approval.

Overall the general consensus from experienced Japanese players is that the game is neutral-game based so it's easy for 98 players to dive into, but the normals aren't as strong so it might not nessesarily turn into that much of a poking game. On the other hand, players that started from KOF13 will probably have a hard time adjusting because the semi-close range is a harder game since you can't cancel the far normals. You also can't rely on wins from death combos, and EX moves seem to be nurfed in terms of invincibility. So if you were covering your lack of neutral game using random EX attacks into drive combos, 14 will probably be a difficult game.

Hmm let me clarify: We weren't lining up for 5-6 hours daily, that's misleading. There were about a total of 12 selected to do the exhibition for e3. We got to choose which days we could commit to but each day the exhibition one only one hour. Granted, we weren't obliged to show up early, but it was E3, so must of us did. That's why I meant by the 5-6 hours wait (vs sitting in a lounge area playing on stream that we saw in other countries--super jealous of those.)

Trailer is out.

Sylvie – A former member of the shadowy NESTS organization, whose modified body allows her to unleash electrical attacks on opponents. While those powers are deadly on their own, what makes her so dangerous is the fact that she’s as nutty as a fruitcake. Apologies, they call that “being quirky” nowadays right? Just look at her crazy eyeball-themed outfit and completely unpredictable attacks!

Kukri – The mysterious hooded underground fighter whose gritty personality compliments his ability to wield sand. I mean, just imagine fighting someone who constantly attacks with pocket sand and multiply that by a thousand to get Kukri.

Mian – She turns every fight into a performance worthy of the Chinese Opera. She’s skilled at Bian Lian — the art of face-changing — and her attacks involve a lot of graceful and vigorous dance moves.

As soon as I saw Mian fighting I thought "...she's a bladeless Lee Pai Long with a hint of Chizuru". I don't know if my comparison will sound farfetched, but I get this feeling, and I like that I find her kinda alike Lee...could it be a similar martial art? I also like her rainbow effects, and she moves in such a stylish way.

EDIT: somebody else has the same suspicion as me

I love this team's stage, and the more I listen to their theme, the more I like it, it's so powerful. I wonder whether it's sung in Latin or Italian...

Cool team, but I wonder what's their goal and why they're allies. I mean, we know that Sylvie is a former NESTS agent, which could indicate that she's evil (then again, Kula and Angel are also former NESTS agents, and Kula is genuinely nice - Angel may be nice as well, but Kula probably won't be too friendly with the girl who tried to kill her in 2001...), and Kukri has some similarities to Lin and Duo Lon, so he may belong to their clan (which didn't like the NESTS after Long/Ron defected from it to join them). Mian does resemble Lee Pai Long in terms of style, but I'm not sure they're actually related (if they are, that's cool).

It will be interesting to find out who these three really are, and if they're this game's Yashiro, Shermie and Chris in terms of motivations.

(speaking of which, I still don't understand why SNK decided to resurrect Mature and Vice but kept Yashiro, Shermie, Chris and Rugal dead, when all six of them seem to be equally popular with the fanbase...)

Did anybody catch Xanadus move on the display of Kukris last combo? He crawling scratching the floor looking for something. Is it a command throw? What terrors lie ahead?

That's the move I had labeled as "toddling" xD It'd be a nice throwback to the Garou Densetsu days if it was a universal system, given the development team's history.

Sylvie collects fingerprints (???), all of Kukri's personal info is basically collected from teammates and tournament staff, Mian follows stock exchanges closely...what a wacky bunch.

As are quite a few others, but the aesthetics for most of them don't blend as well with Iori's, which is probably a strong factor, given that he's a popular character, but in-universe very hard to get along with.

Regarding Mian, here are some observations about her name.

I couldn't quite tell if her fan is something that's a recurring part of her moves, or mostly appears for the sake of extra flair when playing with the mask switching, but it reminded me of Mai and how she can be a contrast with that character:
* Mai - Japanese, supposed to be a ninja and therefore stealthy, but ends up showing off a lot
* Mian - Chinese, practices a form of public performance art, but remains concealed most of the time
Not sure if intentional or if any dialogs or story scenes will play with that, but seems interesting.

I wonder if the Yakov mentioned in Kukri's profile is just some assistant to Antonov, or has a larger role, and if the Sylvie's "imaginary" friend in her head will end up being some another world character that didn't get to manifest as much as the likes of MuiMui did in the game...

So the Jp store preorders page has been updated on the official site and they've all been revealed. In particular, the Sofmap preorder looks quite look good in comparison to what it looked on its rough draft. Full rundown has been toppaged.

And there's a nice developer's interview at 4Gamer. It's quite a nice read and explains why NeoG moved to SNK. I didn't realize Ogura's been around since 1996. He has a pretty modern style considering his age! Might translate it tomorrow... hummm....

Pretty cool to know that kukri is from North Africa according to Antonov. I wonder which part exactly! Maybe South Algeria close to Mali and Niger.
Sylvie is from France and Mian from China.

Loona: your Mai VS Mian speculation is fascinating, I'd be happy if it turned out to be intentional. I have a personal theory, but I like yours better.

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
She could be a Chinese relative of the Yata family -somebody around the net suspects Mian is kinda inspired by Chizuru- since there were rumors about this whole team being connected with elements from previous sagas. I know they only said "connection with antagonists", but I don't see connections with heroes so unlikely, they would add to the team's wackyness.

End of Spoiler

Ish: as much as KOF is my favorite game ever, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the Garou 2 group shot. It's the highlight of the interview to me. I really hope they complete it and sell it as a digital only title, or bundle it with the supposed new Samurai Spirits.

ne0r0: I remember when we speculated Kukri may be from Nepal because of its name, but North Africa -could be Morocco because his supposed favorite food is Moroccan specialty- is appropriate because of his powers.

Is the Atlus stream 30 fps or is my connection acting up? And picture quality is grainier than SNK's daily screens...thank God the audio is really good and there's a bunch of uncommented matches -I suppose the stream ends with an exhibition tournament-, so I'm still watching this stream to enjoy music and voice acting...yes, KOF is the only thing that manages to distract me from studying Japanese. Survivors Under The Sky is fantastic!! I hope the OST CDs include extended versions of these tracks, with the crazy bridges and all, like SNK used to do all the way up to KOF2000.

I noticed the mode select theme actually is the instrumental version of WOOWOOWOO. As much as I like the vocal version, I like the instrumental much better.

As for bonuses, Tsutaya's Athena is...hot. Hotter than the unbearably hot weather oppressing my hometown in these days. And I'm so happy a there's so much hand drawn stuff, it makes me hope for a good amount of special edit team artworks to unlock in the gallery.

On a gameplay note, Leona has a kick followup to her Grand Saber...has she always had it in 14? Besides, I hope loading times get halved in the full game, because they remind me of PS3 Tekken 6 as they are right now ^^; Get ready for the next battle...you got all the time to make yourself a nice cup of coffee before that.

Yeah, I like this team's approach too. They're taking SNK back to the roots while making a game full of new characters, and they're working their asses off in order to recreate the original KOF art style in 3D. I also like Ogura's honesty in affirming he has no remorse moving on 3D. They sure are decisive about what they're doing with KOFXIV.

The translation is actually missing a chunk of stuff from the second half. It's coming next as another article because damn it, Neo_G... every thing he says naturally seems to end up being almost like an anti-thesis to the current Capcom, even though he doesn't mean it at all.

He also says some really wacky stuff that's going to make some people scratch their heads. It's quite something.

But overall though, I really like this new development team behind KOF14. Their views on fighting games-- particularly about the e-sports scene which is coming up next, completely follows my thoughts.

Regarding the sand guy, I remember in Naruto some enemies were controlling sand as their main power, could it be seen as a reference to those guys? Does it look close in some ways? I am asking because I recently found out Naruto is by far the most popular manga IP in China so I wonder if this fact has influenced the KOF team or a reference to Naruto been requested by the new owners.

Naruto is indeed super popular in China. So if you think anything Chinese might be Naruto inspired, it probably is. But One Piece is definitely the most popular comic in China by a huge margin. Im certain there are more One Piece fans in China than Japan, given the population disparity. Of course they are all reading it bootlegged and scanlated though.

Ok, here's are some of the stuff I recalled playing after the a whole day.

A lot of peeps were engrossed in the SFV and other tourneys, thus giving us a lot of time to experiment with XIV.

The overall gameplay speed is indeed slower as intended by SNK, however transiting from XIII will take little to none to adapt. This applies to combo execution as well, you will definitely need to slow down. I had trouble initially doing B&B combos.

I finally understand why peeps are saying XIV looks better in real life. Though the graphics are not as top notch as compared to Tekken 7, it improved drastically from the initial demo build. Details such as smoke (from K' iron trigger), electric sparks, etc are nicely done.

There's also changes of range of the normals. For stand close C, you will need to be really near, a little pixel of and the far version comes out.

Below are the characters that I have tried:-

Iori - C version of DP iframes have been reduced. Need to do it a bit later to anti air.

KOD- He's not called a dinosaur for no reason, he walks EXTREMELY slow, running doesn't seem to get him up close to opponent too.

Goro - He suffers from the walking speed too, but not to KOD's level. Goro players may need to adapt and change their play style in XIV?

Nelson - He plays similarly to Gai from XI. Interesting character, will need some time to play around in training mode.

Hein - Personally I'm quite disappointed with him, was expecting him to be good since his Geese's butler. Has no mix up nor good B&B from what I have played.

Terry - He may lose his XIII's C version of power wave and target combo, but he's buffed in other areas. Burn knuckles is much faster and safe on block. Think of his 98 version! His pokes are better too.

Benimaru- Dp gone for good. 236B shortcut remove too. Cancelled accidentally a few times into his new super, but that's just me.

Muimui - One the more interesting new comer. Had a lot of fun playing her. The downside is she jumps too high! An easy character to pickup. I foresee a lot of players may be picking her up.

Kim - I don't know if I'm right to say he's being nerfed. Players who are too dependable on 234BD may not get used. Have not tested the safejump setup.

Vice - Plays like the XIII version, not much changes from her.

Choi - He's only able to fly 3 times now, not sure if that's change in the EX mode. Sorry Choi fans, I played him once and never play him again.

Kula - She's not able to 236B after 236A in corner anymore! SNK, why are you removing her B&B?!

Billy Kane - I feel he's slower in this version and his 6A pushes back too much. Say bye bye to 6A spam.

Robert - Enjoyed him in this version! Mixture of 98 & XIII.

King - Prof, this is for you! She may have lost her air venoms, but she's still good! Need to utilize her vemons in max mode well. Combo wise not much changes. Have not try linking 63214B into trapshot yet.

Alright, off for KOF XIV day 2!

She looks strong by looking at CEO attendants playing her and I'd like to see if a fellow Cafer confirm or denies it. The only thing I don't like about her so far is that she's seriously lacking in fire effects (she used to unleash a lot more fire in her previous appearances), I know it's no gameplay thing but still...xD

The CEO stream -the beginning of the 11 hours archive- is fantastic, silky smooth 60fps and 720p picture. And Romance puts up a great show.

No problem about the tag. It's indeed a milestone for SNK to be on TV. They are sincere about their gaming biz and takes feedback from the gameplay seriously. I really hope there's major improvement on the netcode.

Oh ya, forgot to post about Yuri. She no longer can cancel her far 5b into dp. Eg: 2b->2b->5b. You need to sub the 5b with her thankfully reachable and cancellable 5a.

Thanks for the translation Professor. It sounds like SNK is treating KoF14 as a transitional game. While that means there are going to be a lot of rough edges due to the team learning as they go it also means that they are committed to making more games in the future and KoF14 isn't the potential last gasp of the franchise.

But the command for Geese's Pretzel Storm has been changed? What sort of blasphemy is this?

Also, thanks to Orphen for his impressions of the game. It sounds like the game is shaping up rather nicely. While I'm nowhere near any of the demos I did watch some of the stream from CEO yesterday and I liked what I saw. SNK really seems to be going all out with the promotion for this game. That's a far cry from the past few KoF games. Heck, that's a far cry from that horrid debut trailer.

Anecdotally, I certainly got the impression that One Piece was the manga of choice during my time in China. It seemed that everywhere I looked there was One Piece stuff out on the streets, whether it was on stickers, t-shirts or what have you. There were even a surprising number of cars with One Piece detailing. That must impress the ladies!

Ah, I had forgot to express my disappointment for the death of the legendary pretzel motion. I'll deal with it though.

Chaz: I think it's safe to assume SNK was thinking of Gaara from Naruto when designing Kukri's moves, I've always loved how blatant they get when taking inspiration from manga or other kinds of entertainment (but I have to admit they had crossed the line with K9999...).

Orphen: Thanks for the updates! Good to hear that King is still viable in the game. The roster is so colorful this time that I'm still unsure of who to use!

Chaz: Yeah there's no doubt that Kukri is inspired by Gaara from Naruto. His moves aren't copied off as far as I know because Gaara fights a lot more dynamic and makes monsters out of his sand, but that fundamental battle concept just screams of Gaara.

That said, Kukri is just a wonky character as far as his personality/quotes goes.I don't know how well he'll get translated, but he's at the level of Terry Bogard wonkyness.

Btw King Of Dinosaurs almost accidentally says "Justice Hurricane!" in the EX version of his throw. He manages to correct himself though.

Speaking of the staff, I read the other article about the 4Gamer interview -I don't know how to thank you Prof, for real- and it reminded me of what I love about classic SNK the most: their romantic vision of game development. This is what won me over as soon as I started playing the SFC port of Garou Densetsu.

Thanks for the complete translation Professor! I can see why you were concerned that some of the comments could be seen as a commentary on Capcom's current fighting game policies. I'm certain the statements were just meant to discuss the goals of KoF14 but fighting games don't exist in a bubble and what one company does will be examined by everyone else. If nothing else it will give people on message boards something to talk about!

No problem, I was like meh when I saw King, but a match with my friend proved otherwise. Her zoning game is there. Any with max mode in this game, she can utilize it for more damage since her EX moves launches.

Besides the silhouette, nothing else plays like Griffon. He is way too slow and misses the clothesline moves.

Will be interesting to see how players going to play him.

I know it, but is could be a consequence of going heel. I know little to nothing about wrestling, but I suppose when you change role you should change some of your signature moves as well, because you're playing a different character. Plus, Dinosaur's voice is the same s Griffon's (IMO), so the only alternative I could think of about his identity is that he's a close relative of Griffon.

Back to gameplay discussion, I'm indeed worried about KOD's speed. He's one of the most hyped characters, but a lot of people who tried him first hand found him unbearably slow, and while a Zangief-like grappler is supposed to be very slow, I understand their concern. I hope he gets tweaked in the day one patch.

Let me make a quick contribution into the "always forgot to say it" club--

I think all the stages in KOF14 are actually circular. Some of them do a good job in hiding it but if you look at the whole landscape images that SNK's released over the period (and also at any videos of KOF doing his super) you'll notice it.

Considering how popular KOF is in Brazil, that wouldn't be surprising. But not all of the team members had their nationalities confirmed yet, had they?

It's just a silly speculation of mine that all the members of the South American team are Brazilian because the latest daily screen has Portuguese subtitles. I was hoping for different countries for each member, but it's no big trouble, and I kinda was expecting an all Brazilian team after I saw Zarina's outfit is colored after the Brazilian flag (I know I had already said it).

Zarina's clothing isn't very argentinian, I think that she is brazilian or colombian.

I still had faith that Nelson is Chilean, otherwise, we will still had to pretend that Ralf and Condor from Breakers Revenge are from here

Welcome Ribnog ^^ I did a bit of research about the Iguazu Falls when Nelson was revealed, and there's Paraguay as well on their borders if I remember well. Besides, I tried and gather some info about common toucan population, and I found there are a lot of them in Paraguay, so I speculated that Nelson could be from Argentina and Zarina from Paraguay because of her toucan. When I saw all the character select portraits on April 25th, I thought "she's dressed like a Brazilian flag xD", so I kinda lost hope for a team with 3 different nationalities.

Please keep in mind I'm not making a fuss about representation of country X or Y in a game, it's just that I like making pointless speculations :D

Hi Ribnog, and welcome to the MMCafe BBS! Thanks for being a reader since the old years!

Your English is just fine!
We have a lot of members here that aren't native to using English, so don't worry too much.
I hope the PS4's price has dropped in Brazil after the manufacturing plant was launched.

So tonight will be Zarina's reveal. I'm looking forward to finding out whether the character's nationalities are going to split too. And man, it's already the end of June! July is going to be hot, guaranteed.

It would be cool if each of them had a different nationality. People unfamiliar with South America may think that all countries are similar, but each of them has a very unique culture (in the case of some countries, like Brazil, even different regions of the same country are VERY different from each other), so it would be a way of highlighting the uniqueness in each of them.

That makes me sad that there isn't an Africa Team, though. That's a continent that could really benefit from having a team with each character representing one country to show that it is also diversified in a lot of ways (cultures, religions, languages, etc.). Oh well, maybe if KOF XIV succeeds, SNK can introduce such team in KOF XV? I hope so!

By the way, welcome to the board, Ribnog! It's always nice to see new people joining us and actively participating of the topics (Micky Kusanagi has contributed a lot to the conversations ever since he joined here), and it's particularly cool to see a fellow Brazilian joining the board!

The way Nelson's robot arm sometimes swaps sides and sometimes doesn't is more annoying than it should be. It looks like one of those non-flips is because of a back throw but the differences in such a short amount of footage really makes it stand out.

Zarina looks like Momoko mk.2. except she is wearing chaps instead of pants so she can do a better job of farting flowers. I'm already not a fan.

Wow, and there were people who thought Laura's outfit in SFV was too risqué... Zarina (I wonder which country she comes from; that doesn't look like a Brazilian name) is giving Mai and Angel a run for their money in the stripperific department. And I wonder how she even has a pet toucan; it's illegal to have toucans as pets, isn't it?

Characterization aside, her fighting style looks really fun! As do both Nelson and Bandeiras - in fact, I wonder why he even wants Mai to become his master, when he already seems to be a better ninja than she is...

Zarina's attacks look surprisingly bland and slow following the footage of Nelson and Bandaras.

Nelson has rapid punches alongside his slow impact hits. He knocks his opponent around a bit as well. Bandaras has relatively fast combos along with rapid slices, and his slower stuff include things like teleports and fancy throws.

Zarina's stuff all seems relatively slow, but nothing caries much of a feeling of impact. There is a lot of dead time between hits of her multi-hit moves. The attacks themselves seem like watered down capoeira, with nothing that expresses any personality or individuality, other than "farting flowers" for a move.

I could be wrong but excessive use of ass, hip and sitting on people is probably not a legit style of capoeira. I've dubbed it "culoeira" but I admit I only came up with that after looking up the Portuguese translation of "ass" on google and I'm sure it sounds dumb and actual native speakers could think of something more clever. Anyway at this point my only question about her is what is the toucan's name? This is vital information.

As usual I'm drawn to the boxers in KoF so the more I see Nelson the more I want to play him. I don't know what it is, it's not like I have a general desire to play boxer characters (Balrog's upcoming SFV debut for example does nothing for me), it's just when they're in KoF. I had to use Vanessa whenever she was on the roster and played the hell out of Heavy D! in 98.

Oh and I am released from my obligation to play Dinosaur because as the most recent interview translated by Professor states, he is NOT Tizoc. Though I do get a kick out of the fact that in direct feed video it becomes clear that his voice is muffled by his mask. It makes me wonder if they had the voice actor wear a rubber mask while recording his voice.

My initial impression of Zarina was disappointing. Everything looked good until I saw her somewhat cute and childish personality. I thought she was going to be somewhat like Luong or a more mature young sexy adult. I was hoping the Toucan would fight along side Zarina.

I love everything about Zarina other than the flower farts and her immatureness. She does have a very good back ground,
quote:

Zarina – The savior of rain forests! She wants to raise money and awareness for the environment, and has zero issues beating up competitors in the name of nature. Zarina will dazzle opponents with her acrobatic Capoeira fighting style and is a strong member of this team. Oh, she’s also bringing along her adorable toucan friend Coco.

Which goes to my second disappointment. With this quote in mind and her fighting style, it seems she is not from another country in South America. Brazil have a huge presence of combating for the protection of nature conservancy in South America. Although, Peru also has a huge presence as well but I doubt she will be from there based on her fighting style. It seems this is a Brazil team.

I was really hoping and still hoping for Nelson and Zarina to be from places like Colombia or Venezuela. Still waiting for the main KOF 14 website to update their profiles to see the place of birth for both. Maybe they were, and then raised in Brazil with Bandeiras. Or possibly at a later age, Bandeiras met the two than influenced them to become fighters. Speaking of Bandeiras, I have a gut feeling the voice actor is someone whose first language is Portuguese. I think he has an accent when speaking in Japanese. That would be nice!

Maybe the toucan is free like pikachu! Or Zarina the jungle princess!

Anyway its kinda ironic that despite the potentially controversial costume, Zarina feels like a safe design. Feels like whole team is chosen as young athletic beatiful people with nice stories to make the representation of South America a commercial justice. Besides Bandeiras is a stalker for education purposes.

For the nationalities, I'm totally expecting a troll move from SNK and make the members nationalities from the most unrelated parts of the world duch as; New Zealand, Lichtenstein and Madagaskar.

I guess "bundoeira" would be more accurate ("culoeira" would be perfect if Zarina were from a country where Spanish is the native language, though). In Brazil, "culoeira" would imply that she's fighting not with her ass, but with the body part hidden by her ass (or between its cheeks; however you prefer to phrase it).

Turns out Nelson and Banderas are from Brazil while Zarina is from Columbia and currently living in Brazil. So basically it's a Brazilian team.

Hey, guys. Haven't posted in awhile but have been keeping up with KOF XIV over the past few months. Has there been any information on the upcoming Story Mode for the game? It seems like it's similar to Arcade Mode with some dialogue, but I'm not too sure.

Just wondering if they talked about it much.

Zarina is beautiful, bubbly and farts flowers like every girl is supposed to do xD Jokes aside, she's more or less like I expected her to be, a bubbly capoeira girl. I like her design, but I don't know how much I'll play her because I've never felt comfortable with capoeira users in fighting games, which is sad because capoeira is such a great fighting style. I like her Hien Shippu Kyaku though, and I saw a move which seems to have some juggle potential. Besides, she's Colombian (even though living in Brazil), which I like, because I usually find Colombian girls to be the hottest in the world.

As for Bandeiras and Nelson, I think I've already talked enough about them, so I'll just remind that Bandeiras is impressive to me because he's a ninja and Nelson is a beast of a boxer despite his relatively slim physique, I really like the impact of his punches. He dislikes weight loss (I suppose in terms of muscles) by the way LOL. Ah, Bandeiras obviously has Andy as his punching bag of choice. I really hope there's a hilarious Andy-Mai-Bandeiras edit team artwork to unlock in the gallery.

I love their theme, it's cheerful and danceable, but I also hear a slight melancholic undertone in it...maybe it's just my inner SNK fanboy, but I feel SHA-V managed to capture the typical Brazilian saudade in this song.

Dark: there was little to no official talk about story mode -we know it takes place some years after the Ash saga, Antonov speaks of himself "the first KOF champion" and team China should have the main role or an important one anyway-, but the dialogue screens make me think about a BlazBlue pre-Chronophantasma approach: you select a team and go through its specific story, alternating between dialogue cutscenes and ridiculously easy fights.

Ah, this is the last full month of waiting for KOF14. I just felt like noticing it :D

I don't get why people expected Zarina's toucan to fight too - sure, there's the Mahamaha precedent, but toucans are hardly major birds of prey in their habitats. The devs bothering to model the bird and putting it in her portrait is kind of going the extra mile to set the tone for her even if it's of no gameplay consequence, I guess, which is the sort of charming thing SNK tends to excel at.

Still, given how much her general "mission" resembles Nakoruru's, there could at least be some interesting moments between those 2, with Nakoruru's shock at the modern world and the feeling she'd probably need to do something about it herself ("so these Greenpeace people you speak of, do they need help stabbing some people?") making her apprehensive about abandoning things to return home, she could always feel like she could pass her torch to this new girl from another continent.
As for her general impact, they can't all be Xanadus and Mians, but I'm curious to see her movelist and get a feel for her flow in-game.

I also get the feeling she'd make a nice team with SF's Elena and Tekken's Christie in a future Project X Zone, not unlike the Chinese girl team of Chun-Li, Xiaoyu and Pai in PXZ2 - team Capoeira Circle or something... it's in the very least a fan art topic waiting to happen.

That reminds me what happened to Yashiro's pet bird? Was it Eagle or Falcon?

EDIT: It seems it's an Eagle. Check 1:03.

Before the trailer I thought that Zarina is the reincarnation of Nakoruru. Now because of the trailer and Profile that might be possible.

Metal Slug Analogy (Or Metal Slug Complete in Japan) is coming next week this game has 1 thru 6 and it is a PS2 to PS4 title.

Does she use some weird variation of capoeira?

I could be wrong but excessive use of ass, hip and sitting on people is probably not a legit style of capoeira. I've dubbed it "culoeira" but I admit I only came up with that after looking up the Portuguese translation of "ass" on google and I'm sure it sounds dumb and actual native speakers could think of something more clever.

quote:

I guess "bundoeira" would be more accurate ("culoeira" would be perfect if Zarina were from a country where Spanish is the native language, though). In Brazil, "culoeira" would imply that she's fighting not with her ass, but with the body part hidden by her ass (or between its cheeks; however you prefer to phrase it).

"Culo" it's also the Italian translation for "ass", we have a lot in common with the Spanish people :)
I like the "culoeira" name, I will continue to use it when speaking of her with my friends!

Thanks, Micky. Honestly, I'd be just fine with that. Sure, it'd be perfect to have both Arcade/Story like XIII, but it isn't a big deal. I'm just glad we're having a KOF XIV at all.

Looking forward to seeing the final boss.

You're welcome ^^ I'd like that better too, but I think the lack of cutscenes in arcade mode* makes sense after all because KOFXIV is being brought on consoles without an arcade launch, like Team Ninja did with Dead Or Alive 5.

*I noticed in the E3 trailer there's a mode with a score counter...I doubt it's a mission/trial mode, my guess is that VS CPU mode is a classic arcade ladder, because time attack only states your time in the end next to your character's portrait.

I've just read an excerpt from Xiaohai's KOF14 interviews and he says in the Stunfest one that closeups are "not that great"...I'm utterly disheartened, because I actually like character models the best during super moves cinematics.

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
but I know it probably is a severe case of lack of taste and standards on my part

End of Spoiler

What's more important, a thought about jumps: I don't see anything abnormal about them anymore in the 36 character build. Maybe general speed is lower than console/Steam KOFXIII -I've just read that arcade KOFXIII is slower than its home ports-, but nothing breaks the flow, nothing slows down the general pace of the game, which I thought happened in the 24 character build instead. So, between speed adjustments and damage reduction, I think KOFXIV is already good enough, but of course I hope the full game is even better.

I think that ALX is right, the change of the jumps was a necesary change since if this game wants to suceed in an online enviroment where no matter what, will never replicate the offline experience, you need to being able of blocking jumps from reaction and not by reading alone

That's right, it's a sign that SNK is being careful in making KOF14 as enjoyable as possible online.

Random aesthetic considerations:
1) this daily screen shows that Angel is slightly thicker than any other SNK girl we've ever seen (if I remember well), I find it a nice touch because I don't like thin girls LOL
2) Zarina has tanlines on her breasts? I know it could pass as unnecessary, but I find it another nice example of SNK's attention to detail in character design.

Japan Expo is coming. Does anybody know which days it'll be playable? The impression I'm getting from a tweet directed to Frionel and the Japan Expo site is that you can play it from Thursday to Saturday, I got no info about Sunday as of now.

Those artbook samples are great. I can't get over how amazing Ogura's art is in my eyes.
Shun'Ei's concept art looks kinda Falcoon-ish to me, especially the shading. It's not bad to me since I probably am one of the few people in the world who actually like Falcoon's art and characters (except I couldn't stand his faces in the beginning), and I'm actually happy Falcoon made one of the 94768458745879 pre-order themes.
Athena's "charging" expression -the center one in her set of uncolored sketches- is so intense, full of emotion...WOW.
I kinda laughed at how broad Luong's hips look in her concept art, she's model-thin in the game xD
Speaking of female characters' shape, it looks like Nakoruru's breast surgery is all the rage right now...

EDIT: looks like Kula is really pissed off at Angel. And tomorrow we're gonna see some decent examples of how Angel and Ramon play at last!!

I just find it funny that everyone on the Mexico team is a wrestler. It's nice that we can have a high-flying luchador together with a typical heavyweight pro-wrestler type, but having both Angel and Ramon on the same team seems like it dilutes it a little, even if Angel is more chain-combo heavy.

The timing of Ramon's animation feels a little funny in his 3D rendition. Angel's really feels like it lacks "sharpness". But King of Dinosaurs is a character so who cares.

Ramon's 2D animation wavered somewhere between making him look nimble and making him look janky. They may not be able to animate Kim's trousers correctly but for better and for worse they really captured Ramon in KoF14.

Has there been a listing for Angel's moves? Since one of the objectives for the game is to make the controls more accessible I wonder if her bewildering move list is going to be altered.

People's Elbow aside, Angel isn't a wrestler, she reminds me a little more from MMA, bus isn't that either.

And to be fair, ramon and Tizoc Dinousaur represent different styles of wrestling, while Dino is more closer to the Puroresu Heavyweight style, ramon is closer to lucha libre/ puroresu jr heavyweight style.

I'm more curious on why these 3 characters decided to make a team, mexican pride?

In the official site he's still a King.
I hadn't noticed the scars the blurb there mentions, but it's kinda funny that his dislikes mention extinction-level stuff like meteors and ice ages.

The team looks fun, but gameplay-wise I'm a bit apprehensive since I never really got a hang of grappler types, and these tend to be the exception in KoF teams instead of the rule - maybe using them in story or arcade mode will help me learn...

I'm speechless. I won't be able to do shit with these characters, but they're just so likeable. Their theme is one of the best ones -now that we've had a decent listening to the intro I absolutely love that part-, and so is their stage, which really shines in the close-ups in the beginning of the trailer (yes, my old complaints about stages are fading away)

Looks like Angel has her infamous (un)chained style intact...maybe her inputs took the Nelson route and were streamlined? She doesn't seem to show off EX moves in the trailer, and that makes my suspicion that she kept her style with simpler inputs stronger. I love her "...onna no ko!" line!!

Ramon is fantastic, so dynamic, I like his new jumpsuit even more now that I see it in full and his Climax is so fun to watch. I actually feel like booting up KOF2000 and putting him in the lab for at least half an hour. I could get compelled to try him seriously in all the other KOFs he's been in. VIVA MEXICO!!

KOD? When I deemed his costume as "ugly ass" in February I actually meant I was afraid the majority of the FGC would destroy him, especially because criticism against KOF14 was even harsher than now...I'd never bet such a peculiar design may be received so well in the West, and I'm so glad about it. He really fits the slow but insanely powerful archetype, I just hope players' complaints about him being too slow even for the kind of fighter he is and he's good to go. I actually like his MAX Zet's Met's -thinking of who Dinosaur really is LOL- more than his Climax, it's a fantastic take on his good ol' Big Fall. I remember how I was kinda nervous at the possibility that KOD may not fall on the ground in a flashy way after smashing his opponent in the camera when SNK kept the end of the move hidden from trailers, but these guys outdid themselves. You can tell from his moves they had lots of fun designing him.

I actually tried 2000 Ramon a lot in training mode and I had so much fun, fast grapplers are such an interesting kind of character. I'm planning to try him thoroughly in each other KOF where he appeared.

I'm actually happy for Hinako.Because with the fantastic new caharacter designs and she is not a story mode heavy character, so if she's not in KoF her best chances would be crossovers and Gals Fighter 2, so its really slim. Having at least a costume over SNK laadies good for her.

So Im not really following DoA that much but I heard virtua fighter had 4 guest characters if this happens with KOF characters I hope They would pick Shermie, Gai Tendo and finally Vanessa or Chizuru. Though Angel would have beaten those latter two easily for the spot in the roster..

A tip of the hat to the continued success of DoA. Other games come and go but DoA5 has been merrily chugging along for years now. Incredibly, it's now giving us a crossover of DoA, Ninja Gaiden, Virtua Fighter, Sengoku Musou, and King of Fighters. The Smash series has nothing on this.

I can only appreciate the keen insight of Tecmo that they gave out this announcement on the same week that Tekken 7 FR was released and thus our embarrassment has gone beyond capped due to the presence of broken ass Shin Gouki in that game, making us completely fine with whatever they do with this series now..... To think that someone in the japanese industry still had such sure win strategies at a coorporative level; who said the industry is running out of juice?

This is great - and works indirectly as a step toward the Sega/SNK crossover of my dreams, even if in the same day the same game announced a collaboration with the wrong SNK (Shingeki no Kyojin).

I wonder if she's getting special tag team attacks with anyone, I love those in DoA, even if tag team mode doesn't usually get a lot of exposure, being an unpopular format for competitions.

BTW Professor, you might want to adjust the timestamp on the video in the news page, since it points to the finals in the video- this bring you closer to the SNK outfits, then has the aquaplus stuff, then has the Mai video reveal. The audience reaction makes it worth it over the official annoucement video.

Speaking of videos, Oda's presentation in the Japan Expo, in French: part 1 and part 2.

The highlight is some Zarina play. Her stance is way more subdued than one usually sees in Capoeira, that that tends to make dealing with collision boxes a mess, so it's understandable to an extent.

I saw the Japan Expo panel, good job SNK on making me literally die to play KOF14. My only gripe with the panel is that Mature's Climax wasn't shown, they're definitely waiting for a KOF Station episode to show it fully IMO.

As for the game in its entirety, I'm just a bit disappointed that characters only have one in-game winpose -except Benimaru and maybe Shun'ei-, but it's just me nitpicking, other than that I'm ecstatic about KOFXIV. I was kinda hoping for old BGMs and knowing that you can trigger them with some edit teams makes me so happy, although I love the default BGMs.

I noticed teams in the 2P Versus icon have changed, Fatal Fury VS South Town instead of FF VS K', nice touch.

As for Zarina's stance, I know a proper capoeira stance would be more appealing to a lot of people, but I think her stance fits her character better. She's dancing samba, right?

EDIT: there's a free KOF14 dynamic theme in the European PS Store!! It's not even restricted to Plus users. It's set in Neo Esaka, it plays the intro of some acid remix of Esaka? (I can't recognize which version, it may be a new recording) and Hein's pose is fantastic xD

My only gripe is that the theme is called Neo Esaka Theme instead of The King Of Fighters XIV Theme, which may make it a little hard to find it when browsing the store without being logged but since it's new it easily shows up as soon as you go to the themes page of any EUR PS Store from your console.

Sure it's not so exciting as having that gorgeous hand drawn art -I'm kinda tempted to buy each and every Japanese KOF14 theme if some of the pre-order thingies actually become available in the Jap PS Store-, but I'm happy to put a little bit of KOFXIV in my PS4 before it's out.

DoA5 is a solid fighter for competitive play, and while it may seem like a fashion show at this point, it was originally aesthetically pleasing on release, with emphases on portraying the (female) characters as fighters.

I guess Tecmo couldn't resist the demand from the anime crowd after all.

Hi Alucard-XII, welcome to the MMCafe BBS!

Micky-- EU's publisher (DeepSilver) might've made a mistake...? I wonder if it's still there. Certainly not in UK.

Videoman-- Thanks for the heads up! Evo will certainly be interesting.

Regarding DOA5, it can be pretty hard to find ranked matches even in Japan right now-- perhaps it has players in the lobbies, which isn't something I've checked. But for the most part I think it's catering more towards the casual audience as for now. The frequent download contents are certainly keeping the game relevant.

The abundant costumes aren't too expensive compared to microtransactions which people spend on smartphone games nowadays.

..Come to think, there's actually people playing it competitively in the arcades.

Team villains version.

I love how SNK is back to giving the oozingpersonality of the game with extra artwork. These are modern (and welcomed dearly) version of 97 groupshot or party scene with the characters in 98. It is such fanservice to the fans who favour that part of KOF.

In team villains version, the theme tells us new information afaik. Chang and Choi hides from Xanadu which shows theyre afraid and most probably stuck with him after they become jailbirds again. In a single shot it manages to give away the story of the relationship between them. You can also see classic Kyo / Iori face off, or how adorable and perfectly perfect Nelson, Zarina and Bandeiras with each other in the Brazil Supermodels South America are. Much hoped second Mamahaha (Toucan) fills the void down stairs. I believe this also shows that theyre just good friends/fighters not directly involved in the main arc against their team members. I bet Luong has a big role or motive that Kim wouldnt approve.

I dont exactly get what is the deal between Billy and Hein one. Im guessing Billy is jealous and maybe he competes against him for the title as Geese's right hand ?

Prof: I've just checked the Italian PS Store, where I had downloaded the theme from, and it isn't there anymore.

Kofoguz: see what I meant when I said Hein's pose is fantastic? Characters are portrayed the most appropriate way in this theme. I really hope this soothing Esaka remix is included in the game in some form, not necessarily in gameplay situation. I'd love it as a results screen theme. By the way, I'm sure I heard New World Order in the Japan Expo panel videos, I'm so happy about it because I love that track and I find it underrated.

Videoman: the tweet got deleted °_° Sneaky tactic from SNK to raise early attention on the demo?

I wonder if SNK has actually planned other showings of the 48 character demo besides EVO and Canton Cup, since they created this World Premiere Tour logo...

EDIT: nevermind, they answered me xD (I wish)
Too bad their world map is severely butchered ^^;

Nightmare Geese is fantastic. I've always liked this concept, but I think zombiefying him and giving him a spectral voice makes him even better. One could argue that Nightmare Geese should have a different moveset instead of just being an alternate costume, but it's better than nothing. The Team South Town theme is really nice, they went the safe way -playing the iconic Geese them on an electric guitar without changing scale- and I like it a lot. Stupid-ass title like always

Shermie's return would be amazing! But I guess if Team Ninja were going to add other KOF characters to the DOA5LR roster, the most likely choices would be King, Yuri (both with clothing damage, of course) and either Athena or Blue Mary, as the more recognizable KOF girls (although Shermie is quite recognizable herself).

Anyway, I don't know what makes me more curious: to see if Mai will retain her special moves even though DOA and KOF play quite differently from each other, or to see her and Kasumi existing in the same game...

(in fact, now that KOF XIV added Nakoruru to the roster, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have DOA's Kasumi in KOF XV - although it could be confusing if SNK's Kasumi Todo is also added to the game...)

The command list page is complete (English version), except bosses of course.

After lots of thinking, my only two gripes about the move sets are that Geese doesn't have his legendary Deadly Rave -I know SNK wanted to streamline movesets, but it could stay as an automatic Ranbu like in 98UM, good thing the super Reppuken is cool though ^^- and Maxima's Bunker Buster seems gone for good -for simplification purposes as well?-, other than that I find there was a lot of work on movesets, to give each character a chance, although I admit some have tons of moves compared to the rest and it may seem unfair.

Gang-Il's Hangetsuzan is aerial only as I suspected from the trailer, and he has tons of follow-ups to his Hakikyaku. His chances to get in my team in case I don't feel comfortable enough with Shun'ei have drastically increased (not that they were low before).

It's funny how Xanadu's Climax is called The Wisdom, it fits his psychopatically enlightened state after beating his opponent to a bloody pulp. HELLMAKER!!

I think I might go to the one in Philadelphia for Summer Jam X. If anyone else goes that would be great.

I think this is a good move to start DLC. They have the ability to make more like Geese. Orochi Iori and Leona first comes to mind. Wouldn't be surprised if they have a MOTW costume for Terry. KOFXI'S has another collaboration in the form of Brave Frontier x THE KING OF FIGHTERS.
With the announcement of the digital copy, makes me wonder if they exceeded expectations with the pre-order physical copies. I think the numbers are looking good.

So Geese's iconic motion is modified but Angel's moves are still as counterintuitive as ever? I had to read an FAQ by Toxico just to figure out what the hell was going on with that girl when she first came out so I hope something similar is published for her KoF14 version.

It's odd that Kensou has yet to be shown. That's not a character I would use for a dramatic, last-second reveal since I don't think he has that big a fan base. Heck, his own teammates seem somewhat indifferent to him.

DoA5 may not get huge tournament numbers but that doesn't seem to have hurt the game in the least, especially since the creators didn't bet everything on that one approach to the game. I honestly hope that the people running SF5 are looking at the examples set by DoA5 and other games that have successfully kept themselves relevant by changing themselves over time. Yes, this means I want beach volleyball in all my fighting games although I will settle for bowling to come back to Tekken.

Sure Kensou isn't so relevant, but I think Psycho Soldier is being held as one of the last teams because it may mark the return of a full fledged song by Athena. I mean, their theme is titled Tachi Bou Ke ~Instrumental, so we may get a glimpse of the vocal version in their trailer. Add to my suspicion the fact that I personally love Kensou's fighting style -he's one of the characters I choose the most when I don't feel like using Kim as Kyo and Iori's buddy-, and I love seaside walk settings, and you'll get that the wait for the Psycho Soldier trailer was a bit hard on me until the 48 character build was confirmed for EVO.

As for the stream, I had thought of the Atlus Twitch channel too, so...fingers crossed.

Mai has had plenty of short strings in most of the games she has been in; furthermore apparently the staff could never really settle with her and most of her chain combos are usually limited to a certain amount of games, and then swapped for others later; compared to having a few special moves she has a large amount of regular moves, normal, commands and etc; that little detail makes her more compatible to a 3D game than Gouki will ever dream to be.

Hey now, Billy debuted in the original KoF game, Fatal Fury 1. That Siliconera isn't pedantic enough for me.

Here I thought Hein might end up being similar to Oswald but he has a much different style of movement. Then again since this was their first pass at animating KoF with this engine I doubt the programmers wanted to take on a character with who has movements as exaggerated as Oswald.

Okay, I have this bad habit of not talking about my theories/doubts in advance (except cases like yesterday when I said a little piece of Athena's latest vocal song may slip in the Psycho Soldier trailer)...I had two doubts about the South Town trailer:
1) What if their theme isn't the same as the track heard in the Nightmare Geese DLC trailer?
2) since Billy and Hein actually got more exposure than Geese because they've been playable for a long time, could Geese end up as the 3rd character in the trailer?
That could be obvious, but still, I was a little surprised that both of those things happened. Their theme vaguely reminds me of Geese Ja, a theme I really love, and I like how Geese was saved for last. His Raging Storm is kinda like Rock's but more massive, great job on this effect. I also like his rekkas.

A bit sad that Geese's voice doesn't sound like Kong Kuwata to me, but I get that SNK made a drastic seiyuu cast overhaul and the new seiyuu actually put a lot of passion and effort in conveying characters' personalities.

I think Geese is still Kong Kuwata, although Billy's VA sounds different to me.

Btw quick trivia, Kong probably took his nickname from Mr.T in the classic TV series "The A-Team". The character played by Mr.T had a name that's too hard to for the Japanese to pronounce (BA Baracus) so the producers renamed him as "Kong". And if you recall, Kuwata had a little bit of a Mr.T going on in his younger days.

Oh and totally off-topic, Murdock was called "Monkey".

So you think it may still be Kong...I'm not good at recognizing voices when I listen to them in-game, with music, sound effects and all surrounding them, so you may be right. As I often say when talking about KOF14 voices, I can't wait for an official CV list, or at least the game release when everyone of us will be able to read the credits.

Thank you for the heads up Prof ^^ The Bund is FANTASTIC. My favorite stage hands down (I take advantage of this post to correct myself, the Bund is a walk along a river, not along the sea).

Alice is sort of a fusion between Terry and Sakura with rekkas to me;

I didn't like Kensou's restyling at all when I saw him in the offscreen photos, but looking at him in the stream he quickly grew on me, and I also like that his voice sounds (stereotypically?) Chinese;

Meitenkun is serious troll material, just imagine an Alice/Meitenkun/Sylvie team xD and his style is a variation of Tung, which I love;

Angel and Geese are impressive like always, nothing to add...except I don't like that Angel's voice sounds less irritating to me, which I don't like because her 2002 voice had so much more trollng value IMO...

It's official, there will be a shit-ton characters competing for a place between Kyo and Iori in my main team.

Some of the new characters look great! South America Team has a huge potential of becoming my new favorite team!

Not a big fan of Alice from what I could see of her, though. I'd rather have her replaced by Yuri in the Women Team and have the Art of Fighting Team completed by either Marco Rodriguez or Karman Cole (although I doubt any of them will ever return as actual characters in a fighting game - at least they got stage cameos in XIII...).

As for the graphics, some characters look quite good, while others look weird. But I think all the stages look great so far!

I think Mian is one of those that looks great and animates beautifully. I love her moves and fighting style. It bugs me that I have seen this fighting style in another video game but can not think which. No one is using Love Heart yet. :(

A few quick thoughts:

The Bund needs about ten thousand more NPC's in the background in order to be accurate.

Do Alice and Loveheart have the same run animation?

Mian appears to be the only new female character who knows how to properly wear pants. The designers for this game seem to love short shorts and long legs.

I really have to say I'm liking Xanadu more and more. Aside from his cradle throw which seems endlessly amusing, he has a normal throw where he literally just rolls the opponent around. So I now have a new headcanon that he played way too much Katamari Damacy and thinks his father is the King of the Cosmos, which caused him to go on a rampage whipping his arms around, rolling people up, folding them, trying to make them fit together into a massive ball so he could return proudly to his space parents. And of course end up in prison for it.

Spoiler (Highlight to view) -
Being only able to watch Twitch archives via a PS4 is such a chore.

End of Spoiler

Looks like you can sort of recreate Geese's Deadly Rave by using his rekkas in max mode, or at least it looked to me kinda alike.

Love Heart is fantastic. I like her vertical Shoryuken because it reminds me of Iori's -HP version looks higher than his though-, and I'm sure her rushing uppercut is a launcher, but it looks like you need to test her in training mode a bit to follow it up properly. Her sword slashes could be an option in my opinion, can't wait to try it first hand. Her Climax comes right from the "final battle" in one of the Sky Love pachi I guess, so cool. I'd love to see full cheated playthroughs of those things.

Xanadu looks solid and dangerous, but for some reason I can't write about him so much as I wrote about Love. I'll put a lot of effort to figure him out in my first KOFXIV days. Gojira I love your Katamari theory about him, his vision of light looks quite...cosmic indeed :D

Ramon looks as fun as ever, I'm so glad SNK brought him back after his disappearance from the last Ash chapter. His colors are all awesome!! I especially like his red/sky blue color.

So the developers had a stage session at EVO and they announced the playable demo for release on Tuesday-- you can read up on details from below. I'll probably post on it once the official coverage footage is uploaded by Atlus.

First of all, I appreciate that the demo is unconditionally free and comes about a month before the full game is released. When the 7th generation of consoles started I hoped each and every game, retail or not, got a completely free demo 30 days or so before release, but my dream got severely crushed. Good thing this kind of plan still gets put in action sometimes.

Back to KOF14, I had bet on a demo roster with the same characters as the PlayStation Experience build plus Terry (or maybe Mai just for fanservice purposes) when the names weren't known, but I'm glad I was proven wrong because this roster is a great blend of veterans and newcomers. Besides the mandatory Kyo and Iori , everything is different from my guess, different in a way I like. Of course I'm happy like a child on Christmas because there's Shun'ei xD

A question: I've seen lots of people demanding a rollback based netcode...is rollback the one and only way to go for fighting games netcode?

There's so much freaking KOFXIV stuff on Twitch, I must carefully plan how to split my archive watching activity through the days...and maybe there are more streams coming :D

The reason people prefer it is the on-frame response time to input. It isn't strategically better than input delay-based netcode due to the fact that there is still an element of guessing or predicting involved, because your side has yet to receive your opponent's input data to affect his character. When you finally get it, the game time travels back to fix the game so your opponent can do what he did on that particular frame (and so on up to the present frame) and then the display will update with the next present frame in time with the new data. This also happens on your opponent's side. There is generally no slowdown (unless you combine it with delay or "smoothing"). The game kind of says "oh yeah, that's what he meant to do earlier, let's go back and fix it so it happened." That overhead he did on his side you'll finally see a few frames later already in action.

Online is going to be inherently undesirable in comparison to local play, but online warriors do kid themselves into thinking it could possibly reflect offline experience easily. It's also funny that people think rollback is also known as "GGPO" when GGPO is just an implementation of that concept...

Congrats to XiaoHai for winning KOFXIV, but I think the true winner is El Rosa for his magnificent Ramon showing. Juicebox's Hein also put in some great work, and Reynald's caveman Muimui was entertaining, too.

There's a lot of debate on this. In general, Rollback seems to be the best method of netcode but only when the programmer knows how to implement it correctly and also do good supplemental coding for the rollback. Also, it's useless if players are distant from each other / lag is too huge.

Otherwise, rollback can end up being an experience that's even worse than the contemporary input-delay netcode.

Here's an example of my experience when playing online in my local region, both players being below 30ms ping:

Skullgirls(Rollback)
Very smooth and plays perfectly. The ideal implementation of rollback code in a fighting game.

SFV(Rollback)
One player will experience a silk-smooth gameplay while the other player can end up experiencing a choppy game where everything feels like Jojo's Diavolo on a King Crimson frenzy. There's no reason why this should be happening in a local region match in Japan, but it does. A typical example of bad modern rollback netcode.

KOF13(Input Delay)

Very laggy. Every jump feels like you have glue on your shoes. A typical example of a bad, outdated netcode.

Dengeki Climax(Input Delay)
Slightly laggy. Enough to make combos harder to execute. A typical example of a bad, outdated netcode.

Guilty Gear Xrd(Input Delay)
2 Frames of lag at local play isn't all too bad. It makes reactions a bit harder but doesn't kill the overall gaming experience. No lag would be ideal, but considering all things, it's good enough for online play.

Thank you both, I already had an idea that some people exaggerate the power of rollback (and identify rollback with GGPO...), but I needed some more detailed explanations to get a better understanding of the matter.

To add on to what Doshin said about online play not nessesarily being reflective of offline matches, offense becomes stronger because it's harder to defend correctly, and it also gets harder to punish opponents.

That said, KOF is historically quite a fast-paced game that it's hard to respond even offline, so for casual players, a few frames of lag might not make too much of a difference.

Antonov trailer
Story mode trailer

What a surprise (but maybe I should have expected some trailer during EVO)...

My first nonsense impression of Antonov is that he looks like Urien after taking an enhanced version of Wyler's drug which doesn't make you a total monster. Massive strikes for sure. Story cutscenes direction looks very anime, and the story trailer ends with a breakdown of the demo. It includes training mode!! Can't wait to go through long lab sessions to get used to the game before release.

Back to the story, looks like Kukri is either the mastermind behind all this mess or one of the most powerful henchmen, which somebody already suspected way before these trailers were launched. I suppose the final boss is seen in the distance when Japan Team is looking at him, he's floating in the air at a crazy height and he's engulfed in fire...another fire user? Kyo references Saisyu in that scene, I'm so happy SNK hasn't completely forgotten him yet.

CGs look better than the footage from the infamous Garou Densetsu/KOF pachi things IMO.

Hum, Antonov is surprisingly bland looking for an SNK boss. Hey may get more interesting when I can see more than just a trailer, but... yeah, he's certainly no Rugal.

That got me thinking too-- I'm sure that circa 1994 having Rugal as a single boss fighting against teams of 3 may have had a technical basis, and that it also broadcasts the overwhelming power of a single person taking all 3 teammates, but it's interesting to think that SNK never tried having 3 bosses, to keep up the structure of 3 person teams. Especially since starting in 1995 there was the sub boss followed by the real boss. I also realize that they played around with the idea in 96 by having the bosses team and the Orochi team, but still.

You have to carefully reproduce the world of "Castlevania" in the solemn atmosphere.

Thanks for the heads up Micky, it's been headlinned!

....Now, why are the cutscenes apparently done in prerender, and why do they look so damn good in comparison to the in-game models (obviously outsourced). SNK may forever remain a mystery when it comes to some of their development criteria.

Antonov is clearly the middle boss and if rumors/leaks have it true, the entity floating in the sky should be the last boss. Add them to the roster and you get the 50 character lineup that SNK has been boasting.

You're welcome ^^ I'm actually more surprised at the amount of CG than at its quality, I thought it was just gonna be the Antonov Intro and the "wounded Shun'ei" scene, kinda like BBCT (the only BB where I've completed story mode till now), where you only get actual motion pictures for the intro and the prelude to the final confrontation.
My theory, as naive as it is, is that they only outsourced CGs and made character models in house. But as you say, SNK's ways are beyond human understanding :D

As for the demo, it's safe to assume the available stages are Neo Esaka, Church, Ring and training...I wanted the factory so that I could train to that gorgeous saxophone ;_; I wonder if the training stage has its own theme, or the game plays the theme of one of the two characters on screen...

This channel has a huge amount of Sky Love videos - not understanding Japanese means I miss a lot of the context, but there's more than enough there to get a feel for the setting and for Love Heart as a character. i can't help but wonder what the devs would have done with that if their assignment had more to do with regular videogames than with pachislot.

quote:

It'd be fun his Xanadu's "enlightnment" moments during his Climax had something to do with glimpsing whatever the final boss is bringing forth.

It's also nice to see that in the story trailer several characters from different teams appear together, since that's unusual in KoF history, leading one to usually wonder whose endings actually count or who was actually there when the important events happened.

Nakoruru's mention of hatred and lost souls during that final boss entrance, along with the leak's mention that the final boss could bring forth characters from other worlds, makes me wonder if the likes of K9999 or other characters that KoF left behind might get referenced before or after the final boss fight.

'Twas a nice, eventful weekend, but I'm mostly glad the SNK devs got to see people enjoying the product of their work and appanretly had some fun while at it - it was messed up how they remained absent from EVO even when XIII was an official game at the event.

Looking forward to see the panel video Atlus is supposed to post on Youtube, and the next Station videos.

Thank you Loona for linking Shen's Youtube, it even includes some Sky Love BGM, which is nice because I tend to give game soundtracks a lot of attention (I know you can hear in-game voices and all, but still, it's nice).

I'm amazed at how the EU Antonov trailer is more complete than the US ones, which IMO felt lacking.

Also, Garou getting an online enabled port with crossbuy on PS4/Vita is fantastic. I just hope it doesn't have flaws of the kind Iggy had pointed out on the Gekka 2 port.

Seeing as how many KoF tournaments are utterly corrupt I don't know why anyone bothers to sign up. After having to fight their way out of an aircraft carrier or a rocket powered space blimp or whatever you think the fighters would stop coming back every year. Thankfully it looks like this time KoF is fully legitimate, or at least it will be until some fireball guy comes out of the sky.

Antonov gives me a Mr Satan vibe but with an great fighting background for the universe where he lives.

The bosses will be "competitively" playable? Will they use one slot or will be like NGBC where goodman used all the slots of the team?

Sibarraz: I suppose it's gonna be the usual way, bosses occupy single slots

The demo has been available in the Australian PS Store for some hours, too bad I didn't even have the time to create an AU PSN account when the news spread. Right now I'm downloading it with my European account. I won't even be able to start it because I got a bad headache, but after a decent sleep I'll be able to enjoy it :D

EDIT: (absolutely superficial) demo impressions!!

While I was downloading it, I had a nice surprise: somebody had uploaded on his own Youtube all the tracks included in the demo, and Saxophone Under The Moon is one of them. It means one of the two chosen characters' theme plays in training stage!! I'm so happy about it I've only chosen Iori as my training dummy till now, because, after that KOF13 nonsense, it's your dummy who determines the theme.

Graphics are better in person to me like they are to some other people, but characters aren't zoomed in enough to me compared to SFV. Movement on details like Shun'ei's rosary look nicer to me.

Until now, I've only tried each character's moves in training and completed the tutorial, which basically is an interactive manual, but I still find worthy because of Antonov spouting Mr Satan tier nonsense all the time about how his techniques are immensely superior to any other character . Too bad the tutorial isn't voiced at all, I couldn't wait to hear that absurdly Russian accented Japanese :D I'd rather listen to I'm The King Of Fighters Type 2 than Yappari Esaka in the tutorial but oh well. I love Yappari, but it doesn't fit the tutorial IMO.

You can read unplayable characters' movelists in the demo, which I find rather convenient, and you can see any character portrait in member select, what a tease.

And now I'm off to the last part on my playaround, some versus matches against the CPU. Tomorrow I'll get serious.

Is anything going on with the Japanese version of mobile KoF98OL? There's some considerable Twitter movement about it today, but anything resembling the little info and null activity on its official Twitter account points to earlier months...

Isn't that more of a local trend based on where you live? I see nothing like that on the Japanese side of Twitter. KOF98OL is not in service yet in Japan but should roll out during the summer. Even the KOF14 demo is not out yet on the Japanese PSN.

Loona: I tried to look up some info but I'm afraid there are no big news. As stupid as it sounds, KOF98OL's Japanese launch is one of the reasons why I started studying Japanese a month ago.

Romance and Frionel are playing the KOF14 demo!! As a fan of both, I'm happy :D

Team China trailer way earlier than I expected O_O

Micky's nonsense KOFXIV demo ramblings Vol. 2:

How could I forget one of the main reasons I'm so happy about the demo is that I can see if Shun'ei is good for me a whopping month before the full game comes out? Turns out I love his mid ranged projectiles and his normals. His far C is unique in that it's insanely fast and you can chain two of them without the least bif of effort. One of them only dishes 40 damage points if I remember well, but even like that I suspect it's a dangerous normal (I will verify this next time I play the demo, my memory could be playing tricks on me). So, my first impression of him was right, I will use him a lot in the full game. Can't wait to see how he holds up against Gang Il for a place in my main team.

I saw some videos showing that KoD has insane armor on several attacks, that may make up for his utter lack of speed.

I'm reading conflicting reports on Mai, some say she's been vastly improved from 13 while some say the total opposite.

Sylvie's backward jump look so low I mistook it for her hop in the beginning xD Her animations are so unique, a fantastic character.

Nelson looks very solid by consensus, I'm happy he's getting lots of love because I immediately saw him as a potential fan favorite when the Athena/Luong/Nelson teaser came out.

As for the free theme, I think it's way too crowded...why weren't characters distributed between the three portions of the PS4 dashboard?

After trying the demo I've realized it's Sylvie's world and the rest of us just live in it. I've also realized that after spending so much time with games like SF and MK going back to for throws takes some getting used to.

Question: In the final game is there going to be an arcade mode or the equivalent under a different name? Is this going to be like MKX where the arcade mode is squirreled away under the heading of "klassic tower" or is this a SF5 situation where people who like playing against the cpu are out of luck?

Sylvie's world? Desk approves :D I've been waiting for this moment since I started following his channel. He made a KOF video at last!! And I love his music choice. And sure switching between games with different commands for normal throws can be annoying sometimes :P

I saw in the E3 trailer a brief moment with a score counter above the player's health bar, so I think Story mode has a score counter and is structured as an arcade ladder, since the main menu says something like "choose your favorite team and fight through 10 stages" when you highlight the Story box.

Ah, I verified that Shun's far C works like I remembered yesterday. What a lightning fast poke. And I love that he shouts "DORARARARARA!!!" during his Climax :D

In versus mode, the CPU kinda tries to win at level 3 (normal, there are 5 levels like KOF13) provided that you don't play ultra-cheap. Looks like level 5 AI is actually challenging.
