AIIIIIIIN'T THERE SOMEBODY WHO CAN STOP THIS FIGHTING MACHINE?!
Yes, despite Capcom management's best sabotage efforts, Street Figher V has improbably survived all the way to its fifth season, and evolved from a sad little mini-game into something that's not only less ugly than SFIV and less boring than SFIII, but occasionally almost as much fun as SSFIIX and Zero 2-3 on a good day!
Capcom's going to need to haul some ass if they're serious about releasing five characters in five months, but apparently pro wrestler Kenny Omega aka Beefcake City Mayor Cody is going to announce it all on August 5?! Will Ono escape Tsujimoto Jr.'s cruel prison and bring us the sensible roster we dream of, with Sodom, Rolento, Haggar, Hakan, and Maki? Or are we doomed to the thrilling return of Dan, Sean, Remy, El Fuerte, and Decapre? See you at the races.

Are they really going to announce all five newcomers on the same day? I mean, yeah, they did that in Season 3, but it seems to be wiser to announce them one by one, to keep the hype going.
Anyway, apparently there is a set of SFV tarot cards which included G before he was officially announced, and it also brings Rose, Oro, C.Viper, Elena and Rolento. Those would be quite good choices, although personally I would like to see Haggar finally added in a SF game (and Dan could be nice if Capcom toned his goofiness down a little bit and made him a viable fighter - there are some old SF games where he is actually not bad).
Maybe I'm this person right in front of you... nah probably not though.

I don't think the world is ready for Oro's nuts in 3D.
Meanwhile, if Elena is in, maybe the global political climate will actually pressure Capcom to make a competent redesign for an orange-skinned, blue-eyed, white-haired "Kenyan" who does a Brazilian martial art. Will the superb team that redesigned Sakura and Cody win out, or will it be the Banana Ken/Lion King Gouki/Franken Nash faction?!
I do like to think that after Alex (who?) became playable after appearing in the City in Chaos stage, Sodom and Rolento are now also required to become playable after appearing in the Ring of Justice stage. Then again, he was in there, too: maybe it will be Damnd???

It's season 5, time for:
MMCAFE LAGFEST: Madman Is Missing edition!
Backstory: while typically the shadowy figure Professor H. Moriarty had been the organizing point for global fighting tournaments, the mysterious host has vanished, and certainly not because he hasn't finished FFVIIr yet which is taking up all his hard drive space. In the finest genre traditions, fighters from around the world are gathering to track down his whereabouts, primarily by beating each other up.
How do this weekend or maybe next look for everyone? If it's just the Americas and Asia, I think the evening/morning timing works, but if we've got European fighters, we can flip it so they can join too. What's good for everyone? Here's some ideas:
August 7, 9:00pm+ EST / August 7, 8:00pm+ CST / August 7, 6:00pm+ PST / August 8, 10:00am+ Japan Time August 8, 9:00pm+ EST / August 8, 8:00pm+ CST / August 8, 6:00pm+ PST / August 9, 10:00am+ Japan Time
Maybe the first new character will even by out then so we can all go to Gill's weird new stage and curse at...Oro?!

If not, it’s going to be Rugal mopping the floor with me for a hilarious one point five straight hours. It’s not that I’m saying that MMC’s top tier player is unstoppable using Dictator, a top tier character, I’m merely saying that...MMC’s top tier player is unstoppable using Dictator, a top tier character.
It’s actually a lot of fun!
I might show up, but I can't promise anything. Currently I have more than one job and a number of dental visits to make up for, all stemming from the fun situation that's been ongoing where necessary services are shut down FOR SOME REASON.
My last SFV quest ended with me unlocking every single pic in the arcade gallery, which made me realize how much I hate Shin Gouki, especially when he is involved in the concept of climbing a time-consuming ladder of opponents just to get ONE chance to beat a stupid OP mind-reading AI with a character I haven't optimized, for a piece of weird fanart. But then after several days struggling with this, the game just handed them to me and said I didn't need to do it. If it was going to do that all along then how about doing it sooner?!
I'm looking forward to new characters, but I've given up on hoping for new stage transitions. I once dreamt that Kanzuki beach had one added where Gouki in his scuba gear was knocked onto a stray inner tube that floated gently out to sea where he could be lost and forgotten.

Oro and Rose are nice, and Dan was to be expected. Now, who could the 45th street fighter be? C.Viper? Haggar? Well, whoever it is, we won't see them for a full year, so...
For a second when I read the new characters, I thought of Batsu now Akira lol. Doesn't Anita have the same moves as Skullmania?

Aghh it's Dan! We'd gotten so close, surviving four straight years without him. At least it's not...Sean!? Bonus that we were spared Elena and Fei Long, but I'm still trying to figure out who thinks Dan is "funny" or "cool" after the SNK joke was already dead and unfunny literally 25 years ago. At least we still have four+ glorious months till he shows up.
I'm importing Iggy's post from the other thread:quote: As for Akira, she's the best choice not named Kyôko! She even balances Dan being there! The timeframe, though... all these leakers are basically dead, no one else was planned after Seth for sure. Ono getting the boot and Covid sure messed things up. what if it's... King Kobra's return? As a tie-in with SF6?
With second-stringers from Zero like Birdie and Karin somehow taking center stage, we can only hope that Justice Gakuen will one day take over the SFVI roster and purge all the crappy SFIII story elements (and ideally, characters) forever. King Kobra would be the hottest addition since Tiger Jackson to Tekken 3.
quote: For a second when I read the new characters, I thought of Batsu now Akira lol. Doesn't Anita have the same moves as Skullmania?
I assume you mean Akira? And the reason you're thinking of our erstwhile master Skullomania is that Akira was initially in a skull-helmeted biker until she takes it off to reveal she's searching for her missing brother Daigo. It was Samus Aran but with less underwear, but that was Hinata's job anyway.
ANYWAY you can all join the lagfest---I'm proof you don't need to be particularly good to be there! Just let us know. Rugal: I'll host and send the invites.

Rose had a new look in Menat's arcade mode ending
Link Here
We see that the Dan gameplay footage shows him in his SFIV costume.
Who did that promo art? It doesn't look like the style Bengus has been using recently.
I have to say that Dan's animations are looking pretty good so far (his face looks like a WIP, so I can see why they recorded footage off screen). Although he is a joke character he has very grounded kicks, his throws are very technical, even his neutral stance looks like your typical MMA stand up fighter.
For Akira, from what I recall from Rival Schools she kind of fills the Yun/Yang gameplay niche, right? It would be cool if she had an assist V-Skill with Daigo like Mika has with Nadeshiko.
A whole year is gonna be a long wait. I think I will grind survival mode during the free trial on my tertiary PSN account so I can buy the characters with FM as they come out.

Even as one of the world's biggest Justice Gakuen fans, I'll freely admit that everyone in the game is basically Ryu with quarter-circle moves, but I suppose Akira can be Yun/Yang since she doesn't have a projectile? Anyway, I just noticed in the Famitsu article but not the English Playstation blog a reference to "recreating a certain something you'll be familiar with that's unique to Justice Gakuen matches," meaning the tag-team move, so god Skullomania willing, we'll have Daigo, "the man among men," in there!
quote: Dan can, in fact, cancel moves with his taunts
Speaking of joke characters, what if...what if Dan accidentally ends up being better than Ryu, Kage, AND Claw?!
quote: I don't know how common the name "Daigo" is in Japan, but given that the most well-known SF player is also a Daigo, it would've been amusing if her brother was included for that reason alone.
Daigo is a moderately common name, but Akira's brother uses badass kanji that mean "the epitome," right in line with a banchou character who says lines with a straight face like "I'll show you the path a man must tread!" Umehara Daigo's kanji are tragically boring. He should probably change how he writes his name if he wants to be a true Street Fighter.

That reminds me, I always thought Dan was supposed to be the ultimate loser, but I was reading some trivia about him last month and learned that while he is goofy and looks ridiculous, he's actually considered a competent fighter in the SF world (or at least he used to be, before his joke factor was turned up to eleven), and the only reason why he's not at Ryu's and Ken's levels is because of his lack of discipline.
After Sakura got some nice character progression in SFV, it would be nice if the same happened with Dan. Sure, he should still be goofy and all, but maybe he could realize in his story that he should take his fights more seriously - and in turn, some fighters could acknowledge he isn't the worst opponent they ever had.

Thanks for the fun matches, everyone! While it took the staff photographer a while to get the screenshots working on his new computer, the Madman Times has still managed to get to print. READ ALL ABOUT IT:
As usual, Rugal descended from the heavens to show us how it's done, with many of the usual types of tragicomic results. One of the most uplifting upsides to these pummelings is that they can finally give the poor, unloved (by Capcom) Fang his long-deserved place in the sun.
Certainly, contestants can look pretty shocked when they manage to survive. A heroic Warzard denizen attempted to take down MMC's toughest boss when he took the form of a very large man intruding in the MMC Dojo but the loss of the costume's lion head proved fatal. In the biggest upset of the night, it was hapless Ed, of all people, who managed to pull off a major victory.
In other news, while Sexy Seth is probably limited somewhat by his questionable source material, he/she/? does look better in a hat.
In a shocking twist, a mysterious BUTTERMONSTER named Juan appeared later, but the biggest surprise of the night was that AbiGAAAAIL and Chun Li got married! Then again, these unions don't always go as smoothly as originally planned.
And now, the weather: while there is always the possibility of relaxing at the pool or even the sento if Honda doesn't yell at you, in these hot summer days, monsters and men alike all mostly just want to head to the beach.

Sorry, I tried. Technically I almost made it because I was in around 9PM, but then I realized it was 9PM EDT which was 3 hours earlier, something that I had not properly absorbed. It didn't really matter since around that time I was stuck with work anyway, but had I known I might have taken a short break to check in.
Might as well comment on the new characters while I'm here.
Dan, wow. I actually did not expect that. I wonder if his story in SFV will be that he closed up his dojo to run a costume shop with his sister. What's really interesting to me about this inclusion is that traditionally, Dan has been purposefully undertuned with stubby normals and weak projectiles. But SFV is a game where everyone has stubby normals and weak projectiles, so maybe this could be his big chance?
Rose and Oro are a bit more expected, but it'll be nice seeing Oro again after all this time. When I think about it, he should be real easy to translate into the SFV system since two of his original Super Arts were like V-Triggers anyway. As for Rose, I'm not a fan of the purple raincoat in Menat's ending but I don't know if she's going to be using that design or not, given the artwork shown was just her regular outfit.
And Akira! When I asked for Akira on Twitter a couple of months ago I did not think I would get her this soon, but why look a gift horse in the mouth? They also mentioned that her stage would have a special gimmick, interesting...

quote: For those playing the home game, G now has an unlockable Skullomania costume.
Also, the Polygon articles featuring the oral history of SF are still going strong, with SF3 being the latest topic of discussion. There are some interesting anecdotes to be found in the article, such as often overlooked arcade sales side or the brutally honest Akiman ragging on SF3 as a whole. Still, when I read these articles I find I want more. For example, the Alpha/Zero series changes so dramatically those might as well be three seperate games; what was the thought process that went into the sequels? Perhaps these sort of ruminations will be covered in the ridiculously overproduced Kickstarter book that will collect this series of articles.
I feel like SFA2 felt like a fairly natural progression from SFA1, but SFA3 felt like a "next generation" (but not NG ohoh) fighting game: it's mechanics were wild and new, its presentation and new visual effects were cutting-edge, its music was dance-oriented, etc. SFV draws a lot of inspiration from the SFA series, but it feels as though SFA3 was as far as they wanted to go in taking SF in becoming more Vs-series (Versus, not Vampire!) like.

That's a good point!
It also makes me wonder: should Capcom consider bringing a second South Korean character to the SF franchise - but this time with a heroic man (or woman)? Considering all the attention the country has getting recently with its films and music, this could attract more attention (in a positive light) to SF. And, after all, Tekken already has both Hwoarang and Baek, KOF has Kim and his team (plus some newcomers from XIV), SoulCalibur has Mina and Yunseong (and occasionally Hwang)...
Sure, some players may complain that a second Taekwondo fighter could feel repetitive - but then again, with all the shotos, plus Sagat and Adon, Yun and Yang and so on, I don't think that would be much of a problem.

The MMC Times was on the ground for the latest triple-time-zone lagfest, and there were reports of a lot of paranormal stuff going on! Sightings of strange mythological youkai duking it out, and down in Racoon City, Juan and Ishmael brought news of TERRIBLE UNDEAD MONSTERS. Further reports of mountain goblins afoot, and...oh, that tenguu was just Dan? Sadly, Vega wiped that Mr. Karate-mocking smile right off his face.
Speaking of legends, the most inconsequential biggest fight of the decade finally happened between Dan and Evil Dan, and after comparing who had the stubbiest normals, we made sure it looked as moronic as possible.
Dan's cosplay might have actually lost out to Juri's, who proved once again that you can by a Z-tier character but still have all the best outfits. Cammy's Marvel vs. Capcom outfit was also so overwhelmingly, heartwarmingly nostalgic that she induced fainting.
Proving the MMC Fashion Show adage that the clothes make the man, the most thrilling moment of the night was when Juan's unstoppable geezer Guile fell to Flavor Flav Ryu and his OG beats, leaving everyone to wonder as he wandered off into the sunset whether Ryu was really a winner all along because he believed in himself, patches or no.
On the subject of unlikely victories, MMC's favorite last boss Rugal ran the show as usual, but Sakura did manage an upset on the motion sickness-tastic airplane edge before throwing up.
However, AbiGAAAAAAIL and his deadly finger flick are a reminder that peppy ingénues shouldn't let a stray victory go to their heads or get too out of control. But it's probably too late with vaccines starting to appear, with young people starting to flock to the beach, girls again going wild, and the Justice Gakuen team watching from the shore and counting down the days till Akira is available for download.

What's this, two Lagfests in a week? There's a MMC Times Weekend Edition to bring you the latest in 3+ timezone play!
Chairman Honda was there to bless the ring for the Rugal Invitation, but the World Warriors were clearly grandfathered in and lying down on the job. The terror of Rugal's Vega made everyone sit up and take notice, so Zangief dressed to match the gravity of the occasion. Slightly less frightening was Juri cosplaying as pirate Vega, since it turns out the solution is to moonwalk.
It was neat seeing Kairi from SF EX, and the biggest thrill was the prospect of losing to Dan, though his hilarious recovery times meant that even the weakest participants could outlast him. I like how his voice is even more annoying than before.
The most amazing sight of the night was watching Ishmael's Alex (!!!) defeat the mighty Juan, an event so unexpected that the cameramen could only catch some awkward footage.
Meanwhile, with summer coming, some people are lying around working on their tans and breaking out their shades, though as in real life it's always just a matter of time before kappas and muscleheads take over the place.
Also: sometimes it's important to launch cops out of your house when they conduct warrantless searches.

quote: It would be cool if she had an assist V-Skill with Daigo like Mika has with Nadeshiko.
the only logicial assumption is that they're all Justice Gakuen characters. BEHOLD, you know my vision to be correct
The most important part of the Akira trailer is near the end! It's not clear whether the collective Cafe will be more excited by Akira's brother or Oro's turtle appearing as partners, but all I care about is that Akira's energy flashes the kanji for "friendship," in the proper nod to the "two-platoon (tag-team) of love and frienship" moves from Justice Gakuen.
I was just thinking how I was getting tired of SFV's old stages and familiar faces, and a mini-revival of my favorite Capcom fighting game (note I did not say "the best Capcom fighting game") is just the thing...and I barely even ever used Akira! It was all Daigo and Hinata, all the time.
Please watch this space on Akira's actual release date, during which I will recite the Justice Gakuen school song in its entirety, which I still remember better than my real-life school song. Iggy can sing Taiyou's or Gorin's, I guess.

As for the Case of Rose and the Missing G: Ono and friends were pretty upfront in past interviews about how SF's story has always been quote "pretty weak," and the whole story of SFV seems to have been written on the fly. Necalli was going to be central and was on all the early ads...until they realized how lame he was, and wrote him out of his own game by the second season story mode, where he was literally an irrelevant nuisance to Ryu while trying to fight Shadowloo. G appears...but then, other (much more boring) savior figures like Gill are written in because SFIII's story had to be at the end. Like I was saying above, maybe Rose's new story is them realizing that SFIII is a stupid dead-end of a story and no one cares about Gill or the Illuminati, so SFV's final and greatest gift to humanity can be making it so that SFIII never existed. The weird thing is, rather than retcon SFIII out of the timeline, wouldn't it be just easier to have the next games taking place after it? Before SFIV, there was the idea that there was a huge time gap between SFII and SFIII, and therefore the most classic World Warriors couldn't be in the next games because they would be too old - but SFIV and SFV dropped this impression, especially IV, which had both the SFII World Warriors looking just like they always did AND some SFIII characters that are young in SFIII (Ibuki, Makoto, Elena and the Lee twins) and thus wouldn't be able to appear in a game if it took place too many years before SFIII. In other words, SFVI could perfectly bring back any character without having to worry if they would be too old. And even if it did, Tekken already showed that you can just bring everyone back with no worries (even if it pretends the older women in the franchise like Jun, Michelle and the first Kunimitsu don't exist).
As for this time reset idea, honestly, I don't like it. Sure, it can lead to interesting stories and concepts if used right; the problem is that it is too easy to mess it up and result in something awful. This idea may have worked for Mortal Kombat, but that's only because Armageddon ended up in such a bad way that anything would be better. SF, despite being far from having the most fleshed out story in a fighting game, hasn't reached that point yet to need a reboot.
Maybe I'm this person right in front of you... nah probably not though.

If this plotline is used all that will happen is that Rose will screw up, generate more psycho power, and bring back Bison in time for the first season pass of SF6.
Chun-Li, for all her cockiness, gets her ass handed her to by Juri and Bison throughout the SF series, and also has a strong match in Viper in the SFIV storyline. So, perhaps, Rose can redeem herself in the past. Anything is possible in the SF storyline, it seems.
I am hoping SF can advance the storyline beyond 3rd Strike. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Cammy need to be in the games to sell, so I think SF6 can take place a couple of years after 3rd Strike without aging the characters too much. But the storyline does need to move on from Satsui no Hado and Shadoloo already. It's old and tiresome.

If this plotline is used all that will happen is that Rose will screw up, generate more psycho power, and bring back Bison in time for the first season pass of SF6.
On one hand, if Rose fails to alter the past then destruction is allegedly unavoidable.
On the other hand, if Rose succeeds in altering the past, then Capcom gets to retcon any and all of SF5 that it wants to retcon. Not just Bison, they can bring Shadaloo itself back with Sagat, Vega, Balrog, and the various Dolls all back in their original roles. They want Sakura back as a Ryu-obsessed schoolgirl instead of a reality-facing woman, then she's back to that. They want a different Nash revival, then he's back differently. They want to erase Necalli, then he's gone. They want to erase G, then he's gone.
Besides, a time manipulation reboot would just see Capcom following in the relatively recent footsteps of SNK and Netherealm.

What's that? Hahahah, no, of course Juri didn't get any improvements. What do you think this is, a game where they thought about Juri/Alex/Claw/Fang for more than five minutes?
The Random Enhanced Gadoken is a unique way to get rid of Dan's infinite combo. They probably could have done more discrete like limit the number of V-Skill cancels in a combo, but chose to add a gimmick.
Apparently Zangief got a major nerf with a lack of throw invincibility to his EX SPD on frame 1. I tried playing over the weekend and my skills have really deteriorated and I got frustrated really easily. I think 5 years is enough with this game for me.

Most of the hope seems to come from a comment from Riku Ozawa, who said it was not impossible. But that "hope" ignores that the comment was instead pretty much ruling out the possibility.
It is worth noting also that various other developers have mentioned in the past the various road blocks Sony has placed against their attempts to enable crossplatform play. Epic revealed just how sweet a deal Sony turned down when Epic was originally trying to get Sony to agree to crossplatform Fortnite play. Epic has also pointed out that Sony is the only company that requires publishers agree to potentially pay Sony monthly compensation for crossplatform play.
I'm leaning more on the sales success of the title, being the most successful release of the franchise ever. So there may be a financial incentive to bridge the gap between player bases.
Although I do agree, it is foolish and greedy of Sony to demand software developers pay the vig.
In the current gaming market, I find it very unfortunate that we went from the PS3/360 era of pretty well curated ecosystems for games with single gamer tags / user ID's - to the current state where you have a platform ID, have to pay to play online with the respective platform (barring PC), and then are further sequestered by the respective software title's unique player ID.
e.g. I'm still a bit salty that my Capcom Fighter Network ID is not portable between the PS4 and PC. Although considering that mafia extortion exposé on Sony - I reckon that's a result of platforms becoming more fractured, and Sony no longer being interested in being a neutral intermediary when instead they can demand a cash payment from developers (crossplay) and players (online play).
It's a damned shame. I wonder what the split will be for Strive sales, they were touting 300k shipped earlier this week, but physical Japanese sales were just 11K and I honestly don't expect Western markets to pick up slack in the physical sales area. So the question is - what's the split between physical and digital sales between region, and then what's the split between Playstation systems and PC?
Crazy as it seems - I don't believe fighting games have the cultural cachet to be platform exclusives. A large part of the success of Street Fighter 4 was due in part to a poverty player being able to run some version of the game on a potato.
Ignoring reason, I could simply fall back on my superstition that odd numbered main line Street Fighter games are cursed entries. :b

Well, the 360 was the beginning of paying to playing online with a particular platform with Xbox Live Gold: unless you had paid for the subscription, many games on X360 would not allow you to play online. Once that genie was out of the bottle, neither Sony nor Nintendo could ignore vast revenue that provided.
I personally prefer not having all of my user information the same across all titles with one common user ID people can stalk me with, and given that that was the norm for many online PC games particularly ones which have their own servers, I don't see this as too big of a minus. The Google Play store on the other hand does kind of provide that, but I find Google's services to be increasingly uncomfortably invasive.

Sadly, 11K sounds about right for GG. This has always been a series where the lofty pre-release expectations never seem to match up to the actual sales.I

Isn't that what family sharing plans are for? Besides, you just make a new account for smurfing; it just will be a new account that isn't linked to anything else.
As for Strive's sales, Steam records a peak concurrent user count of 31,156 players around launch day. The daily peak has since dipped to around 16-19k players.
In comparison: Dragon Ball FighterZ: all-time peak 44,303 three years ago; current daily peaks 1.4-2.6k Mortal Kombat 11: all-time peak 35,147 two years ago; current daily peaks 2.3-2.7k Tekken 7: all-time peak 18,966 four years ago; current daily peak 5-11k Street Fighter V: all-time peak 14,783 five years ago; current daily peak 3k GranBlue Fantasy Versus: all-time peak 5,287 fifteen months ago; current daily peaks 129-142
A few years ago Valve went out of its way to block the methods that other sites could use to get pretty accurate Steam sales estimates. Now such sites have to use fairly inaccurate methods. Playtracker estimates around 100k-210k people on Steam own Strive, while Steam Spy estimates it to be 200k-500k people.

Snark aside, and as ugly as Luke is, I am relieved to have a new character here instead of some out-of-place cameo or (worse) a guest from Tekken, God of War or Fortnite. And Oro and Akira look nice. Hearing the opening start when she's low on life in her stage made me shed manly tears of burning friendship. And her maid outfit from the event in Seishunnikki is just great. I love that they're really taking a Smash Bros approach to this cameo and try to incorporate as much as the original game in her.
To be honest, I really like Luke. I was kinda hoping the final character (and possible SFVI protagonist) would be a Taekwondo fighter (a more orthodox Taekwondo fighter, unlike Juri), but a MMA fighter is cool, too. I'm not sure if I like the idea of him having projectiles (after all, MMA is all about being close to the opponent to fight), but he's a cool design. This time, Capcom made the right choice.
Akira and Oro look great, too. Hopefully SFVI will have more Rival Schools characters; the sports team would probably feel out of place in Street Fighter, but I think characters like Tiffany, Boman and Edge would feel at home (Roy and Batsu's team, too, but these four would maybe feel redundant - then again, in a game with so many shotos, why not add one or two more if they're interesting characters?).
Maybe I'm this person right in front of you... nah probably not though.

Ed's currently shuffling off the field to that bench, having already been replaced as the "blue-eyed boy who represents the future of SF" in his debut game.
But enough of the future footnote that is Luke, let's get to the pretty people. Oro and Akira benefitted from coming later in the game's life since they seem to share the design philosophy of being able to do everything. First, all their moves seem to be able to connect; even Oro's command throw can be a combo ender. Even their jumping looks fun. Oro's double jump looks hilariously annoying. Also, while I wasn't certain what would make anyone step away from Karin to try out the newest rekka character, Akira's ability to hose people down with a fireball on her jump in might do the trick, never mind her ability to launch and juggle helpless opponents. These two look to be a hoot.
I can feal the justice burning in my heart! We must most certainly have a Lagfest on the weekend of August 20-22! Mark your calendars for HEROIC HIGH SCHOOL ACTION now. EDT evenings/Japan mornings? Any PDT? We're most certainly going to have to have some Geriatric Mutant Ninja Turtle action in the not too distant future. Get ready to lag!
Actually, I think Luke may be a little luckier than Alex and Abel; while they were heavier characters with focus on grappling, Luke seems to be a more standard SF character, easier to get used to, with projectiles, uppercuts and all. Many casual players may end up liking him, which was harder to do with Alex and Abel.
Of course, it may be a different story regarding pro-tournament players. Then again, I'm not even sure which characters are liked by them nowadays, and if I remember correctly, even Ryu and Chun-Li were largely ignored by them at some moment in SFV's lifespan.
Maybe I'm this person right in front of you... nah probably not though.

Rare Customer | "Re(1):Fluke Luke" , posted Fri 6 Aug 16:31
quote: What happened to the "World Warrior" aspect the franchise was known for? It's such a shame. Total unoriginality.
This.
Street Fighter has had a rough patch since Street Fighter 3, and I say this as someone who loved Street Fighter 3 back in the arcade. Street Fighter 3 ventured away from the obvious World Warrior design aesthetic and dove into more of an esoteric story aesthetic.
Street Fighter 4 cashed all the nostalgia chips with the initial roster just being Street Fighter 2 again for everybody that slept on seeing SF characters in polygon form in Street Fighter EX series.
My feeling toward many of the newcomers is that they were uninteresting versions of old characters. I guess this is how some people felt about SF3, but SF4 didn't have the benefit of a stunning team of insane talent putting on a 2D animation clinic for video games. So the SF4 characters were boring, on top of being tremendously ugly looking.
Hakan is pure gold. A visually unique and interesting take on a cultural fighting style - back to the emphasis of WORLD WARRIOR.
Street Fighter 5 suffers a similar fate to SF4 visually, where I'm largely uninterested in it's continuation of the odious visual style of Street Fighter 4. This is the model of the old expression, "polishing a turd."
At least once I got past the visuals, the game speed and feel felt like Street Fighter. It didn't have that odd gravity of SF4 and the constant interruptions of time wasting micro-cinematic attacks during matches. I say this as someone who hated the amount of time Street Fighter EX wasted with normal throw animations, much less Super / Ultra moves.
Overall I'd say my favorite SF5 newcomers are Menat and G. Both do something right in terms of re-purposing the familiar, or just being so bombastically bizarre they could only exist in Street Fighter world (G). Although similar to my Fang complaint, a lot of the whimsy and flourish of G is diminished by the visual style of the game. I feel as though it's time for Capcom to abandon the classic 2D aesthetics (Capcom Design Works) of Street Fighter visuals, and craft something better suited to the output they produce (or subcontract out to be produced).
Ono era Street Fighter games are defined by the sheer lifelessness of them for me. Nothing about them is as visually impactful as Street Fighter 2 was, going from playing arcade games with small, limited animation sprites, to big bold player sprites in Street Fighter 2. Then Street Fighter Alpha and Street Fighter 3 series just existing as the talented teams at Capcom keeping 2D animation alive via game sprites.
Ono era is submitting to the tyranny of the polygon, and not bringing it to heel as Arc System Works did.
Capcom ought to be more deliberate in their future creations, and tread carefully between narrative characters and World Warrior style characters. I believe there can be a balance, but the absolute worst thing you can do in Street Fighter is be boring.
Just a cursory web search to compliment my plea for a Mongolian Wrestler (look at this visually rich martial arts culture and tell me Capcom of old couldn't mine here for gold) added to the cast turns up Dambe and Bokator. I'm sure there are so many more out there that could be added.
That doesn't mean we need to base everything off of every esoteric fighting style, if it's not particularly distinct, then they could do like Street Fighter 2 and borrow liberally from the movies, manga, and anime of the era. I'd like some homage characters for - Bolo Yeung, Sonny Chiba, Steven Seagal (ignoring his real world nonsense), Sammo Hung, and others. Note, homage - not rip-offs as evidenced by Lei Wulong being Jackie Chan until Namco was apparently told to knock it off and now Lei is just a lame derivative character instead of being the Jackie Chan rip-off in Tekken.
Mine other Capcom games of the era. I love Final Fight, and wish Carlos the Ninja would get the respect he deserves; but Saturday Night Slam Masters is sitting there waiting to be put to use. . .
Expansion of the roster by pursuing the inevitable future as well. There are several family men in the Street Fighter series. Pass the reigns to Mel Masters, Amy (Guile's daughter), Datta, or one of Hakan's daughters (maximum waifu-bux to be cashed in there if they set it far enough in the future and have a female Turkish oil wrestler).
In summary, new characters on the roster aren't replacing anybody. They should be added to co-exist and compliment the current characters; but at the end of the day the series has always been the Ryu and Ken show from Street Fighter 1 days (excluding boss and non-playable characters of that entry).
An inspired team would need to make a concerted effort to knock it out of the park. Leave the losers on the cutting room floor.
This may be controversial opinion, but I don't feel like time should be wasted on re-inventing the fan favorite characters in sequels. Devote that effort to the new characters, and just bring over the old characters. Then polish them up, but focus on making new awesome characters. So much nostalgia is placed on Street Fighter 2, but those same folks forget only Ryu, Ken, and Sagat were returning characters. Everybody else was a new weirdo at that time. New characters can work. They just need to be captivating!
Sadly I feel as if Street Fighter is lost. Street Fighter V is firmly in the soulless INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY state. Which is why new characters are so uninspired, game models vary so wildly, more regurgitation of decades old music, and we're back to box art for Japan and hideous steroid monsters for the West. Sorry, I tried to dig up the name of the American artist responsible for defacing Street Fighter V, but I couldn't damn well dig it up. He's not a bad artist, just tone deaf (although that may be more the fault of American culture) - like hiring a ska band to play at your grandparents funeral (and they weren't a rude boy or rude girl).
Street Fighter 4 at least resulted in an okay artbook with Ikeno and Akiman's artwork carrying the load. I don't think a product of that sort exists for SF5, although I haven't looked since it's such a mess. I miss the days of looking forward to Capcom art (purchasing the art books for titles I never played because I loved that art team). Now Bengus is apparently phoning it in for an easy paycheck (Street Fighter 5 is the Wings to his previous Beatles tier work), Capcom USA is letting their fanfic branch in Canada produce ugly derivative art for the games, and don't get me started on those abominations on the Character Guides. BARF! </River City Ransom>
So we may be cursed moving forward, unless a new team comes along with passion. Sort of how nostalgia for comic books fueled creative artists and writers to produce the inspired comic material of the 70's and 80's that are some of the defining works of the medium.
There's got to be a Cannon Bros over in Japan who have yet to infiltrate Capcom. Give some skilled and passionate fans the reigns and let them create something breathtaking.
I hate not loving Street Fighter, and being forced to endure 5-10 years between underwhelming entries.
I'd be up for scrubbing up matches if my schedule permits. Haven't played in months (non-portability of my CFN user ID means any progress made on PS4 is inacessible on PC), but that never stopped me before. It's like riding a bike - it a fist. :p

SF4 added 1 Mexican, 2 US , 1 French, 1 Korean, 1 Turkish, 1 Russian, 2 Japanese (if you want to count Oni), and 2 Mysterians (Viper and Seth).
SF5 added 1 Canadian, 2 Japanese (3 if you count Kage), 1 Russian, 1 Brazilian, 2 US, 1 Egyptian and 1 Arabic. The issue is with the Mysterians (Ed, FANG, Falke, G, Necalli). If you assign them to their inferred nationalities however, that's 1 US, 1 Thai, 1 German, 1 Alien and 1 Aztec (or Mexican if you want to play Civilization).
Compare with SFZero: 4 US, 7 Japanese, 1 Italian, 1 Alien (Ingrid), 1 German and 1 Mexican if you count Juni and Juli.
I think the franchise is fine on this aspect.

Isn't Viper from the USA? The US flag appears when you choose her, and she's even an undercover CIA agent...
But yes, I agree with your point. Maybe the complaint should be in terms of how many newcomers have fictional styles (like Menat and Rashid) rather than real-life martial arts (like Laura and soon-to-be-released Luke), instead of how many nationalities are being represented in the series.

Good stats there Iggy, but if you compare the insane amounts of Japanese and American characters, these stats just don't justify the lack of international diversity that is presented. There's just way too many of the former nationalities to make the franchise kind of watered-down.
I remember being so excited when Menat came into SFV, not only was she a great design, but she was Egyptian, another new nationality to the World Warrior ethos. Which is what the designers need to get back to for future games.
We need some Irish, Australia and more African characters introduced into the SF series. Though I'm not on the side of wokeness, doing this would be beneficial and exciting to the franchise, and perhaps players from those areas can find a character they can be proud of that represents their homeland.
Pencilero, you bring up some excellent points. In regards to what you mentioned about Bengus, I wasn't too much a fan of his SFV art in the story mode. It seemed to me it was done in a rush and ill-inspired, for what as you mentioned just for a paycheck.

This was a pretty hilarious meme of SF5.
The argument for "World Warrior" is less a checklist, and more - what unique fighting styles can we use in this fighting game?
I suspect SF5 blonde roster is an accident of negligence / incompetence, and not a subversive Aryan plot by Capcom.
The following is a more general missive not prompted by Baines post.
I hammered out two long missives that devolved into meditations on fighting games, the current pandemic, and deep depression some people may be experiencing. Rather than expose nerves, I'll say this:

Guilty Gear Strive evolved through a pandemic era world (if anybody has insight on what percentage of development was complete in 2019 I'm all ears), and delivered a much more competent product at launch than the genre figurehead with the corporate backing of Sony.
Yeah.
There's a global pandemic in progress; and I am not unaware. Rather than mull it over, and suffocate it, I'll just put it out there - the pandemic has been intensely stressful and I see no end in sight. Mentally and emotionally I have not been this low in some time - perhaps my life.

I'm sure we can all agree that the current balance is less than perfect. Sure, one can argue that pretty much everyone has a chance, but let's not pretend it's even odds on every matchup. If we're going to talk fairness, I think that understanding the underlying game mechanics is crucial. Without that, you're not going to be able to tell who's winning, who's losing, or why.
You can still have fun if you remain oblivious to all this, but odds are that you'll eventually end up getting clowned on by someone that knows the game better than you. My advice is to grab a cup of coffee and try to keep those eyes open. We're all part of this same community.

Headmaster Iggy has gone on vacation missing and only the most heroic lagfest fighters can rescue him! So give Akira a spin, and ask yourself: “is my Burning Heartbeat blazing with sufficient justice compared with either of these magnificent legions of heroes who are united by fate?!”

Ohhhhh, these are happy, sunny days at Taiyou Gakuen: Akira is charming and she is also a beast. I have high hopes JUSTICE will be delivered at last when she banishes damnable Cammy, Gouki, and Rashid from top tier. So come join the beach party on Friday/Saturday. I was playing around with Tournament Mode invitations but you can probably ignore them---I'll invite you the usual way as long as I know your CFN.

Thanks for the great games! Oro in his win pose sez: they hit the spot! Just in from the school newspaper club at Madman Gakuen: it’s the latest issue of the Hot-blooded Justice Lagfest Times, filled with brotherly love, burning justice, and high-flying gang violence.
There were masses of troubled youth from Gedo High School running around, including so many Akiras that everyone got exhausted trying to keep track. Some students seemed marginally interested in actual book learning, and the newly elected successor to the previous Iincho/Class President tried to bring some order.
However, locals report that an old man who just wanted to take his turtle for a walk was harassed by a local banchou and his sister. It’s too bad, because it’s an extremely well-rendered turtle. Hardworking local mechanics also learned the hard way that they are not necessarily on the same page as delinquent biker girls.
Meanwhile, an out-of-town sukeban under Ishmael’s command temporarily took control of Gedo’s gang.
Akira’s Justice Gakuen-style launcher is a great way to see all kinds of sights you never knew existed, though the most improbable sights were Akira’s maid cosplay from Nekketsu Seishun Nikki 2 and Daigo in a tracksuit (!!) to match Akira’s athletic wear.
Some students left campus for somewhere more exotic, though per top school reporter Juan’s headline, Teenager goes to space and gets crushed by a dictator. Rugal, better known as Hyo “Detestable Madness” Imawano, presided over 20+ wins, though the occasional heroic banchou came out on top.
In the end, it’s best to just let rowdy youth unwind at the beach, though I still wonder how Akira keeps her bike from getting rusted in the waves.

We finally tracked down Headmaster Iggy, and it turned out he hadn't been brainwashed by ninjas, he was just at the (Kanzuki?) beach! That's right, it's:
MADMAN GAKUEN: BURNING JUSTICE LAGFEST 2 - HEADMASTER IGGY EDITION!
So don't make Akira cry, and instead charm her with your fighting skills this weekend. Are you at least as enthusiastic as someone (hello!) who just spent actual money on an auction for a 1997 arcade flyer that says, "[This cabinet] Operating with Burning Vigor"?! If you are operating with similar vigor, bust out your student ID, steal your brother's if you have to, and come on over! We may or may not change the time last-minute, but you're just gonna have to figure that out!
Time (Updated): Sept. 18 (Sat) 11am EDT / Sept. 18 (Sat) 4pm UK / Sept. 18-19 (Sat/Sun) 24:00 Japan
Invited Characters: Only characters in school uniforms, track suits, or biker garb. I mean it this time! Acceptable Stages: Rival Riverside, Kanzuki Beach, Kasugano Residence
PC mods to convert pointless characters into Daigo?: You bet your @$$!
Now, as proper Gedo High School students, we shall all sing our glorious school anthem (you DID memorize the lyrics, didn't you???) in honor of Akira and Daigo. ♫ The path on which a man must travel/Is dark and steep/This is the path of Gedo/ ♫

Okay, Cafe gourmands, it's time to finally leave the cafeteria and join Akira and Daigo's gang at Gedo High School in a thrilling competition between rival schools on Saturday.
I don't wanna see anything that's not school or biker related! ...unless it involves helping the elderly, since we are also celebrating Oro.

Thanks everyone for today's SFV Nekketsu Seishun Nikki 3, especially Rugal for entering Midnight Bliss mode for a four-timezone, three-continent lagfest!
And thanks to you inspired geniuses, I was so happy to see not only Daigo and Akira, but also Roy, Kyosuke, Edge, and Kyoko! (Oh, and also Skullomania?!)
I was sad Hayato was on vacation, but Oro was a perfect stern-faced subsitute PE teacher (play ballll! where is Shoma?), and since every single character in the whole game wore their own tracksuit (yes, literally everyone, even the ones you forgot existed), it felt like the hot-blooded teacher was right there with us.
Things were rowdy around Gedo High School: schoolyard brawls with suspected assassins, rival sukeban appearing, lazy banchou slacking off, fights in the shower room, people cutting class for karaoke, mostly naked women pushing rivals off bridges, and exhibitionist men getting thrown off rooftops.
I'm not sure if the last straw was Akira's constant illegal bike parking, or the Kazamas punching President Lincoln in the nuts, but Kyoko had to instill discipline.
Speaking of which, I'm sad to confirm that unlike SFIII, Oro's nuts are no longer visible. Sorry about that.

"He's a madman!", they all said. "Even if he managed to grab a large B2-sized 1997 Justice Gakuen arcade flyer on an auction for less than the price of a bento lunch, there's no way anyone could harbor enough BURNING JUSTICE to display it properly and get a custom frame for it, right? ...Right?!?!" How wrong they were! Like Hayato says, 自分がまぶしいぜ! I'm incandescent! And I'm here to tell you that, like the arcade cabinet, my home is now "In Operation with Burning Vigor!"
Anyway, now that Akira is in SFV, Justice Gakuen is officially SF canon and thus on-topic forever in every thread. This is a good chance to remind you that Iggy's marvelous translation of that CFN interview with Itsuno on Justice Gakuen is massively better than the colorless, talentless excuse for an official translation that Capcom USA published.
Also, these Akira juggles by Momochi fill me with joy. Let's try to reproduce them when we head back to Gedo High School to celebrate as soon as Prof's hand is back in action, or anytime anyone wants a lagfest in the meantime!

At the start of SFV, I would have been happy knowing that Decapre had been Decapre'd. Midway through the game's life (particularly after A Shadow Falls), I was honestly a bit annoyed that she'd been booted for a Cammy return.
As for Luke, I don't have much hope for how Capcom treats him. Alex, Abel, Decapre, Necalli, ... They all just get pushed to the side so the series can return to the SF2 roster.
Capcom didn’t do anything to Necalli. Instead, the world came together for a brief, shining moment and said with one voice that Necalli was garbage.

One of the many, many mysteries of Necalli will always be who disliked him more, fans or the staff. Did they look at the usage stats? Did people like me complain too much? Did the initial designer disappear and leave no one to advocate for him? Unlike other obvious failures like Abel, Alex, and soon to be Luke, Necalli barely got a full year of “his” game before being banished. Sure, he’s dreadful and out of place and I’m happy he’s gone, but I’m puzzled anyone bothered to add him in the first place if they were that uncommitted to him.
…sometimes, the silliest solution is also the most likely: maybe Capcom was worried that Namco would notice they stole Tekken 3’s dumb War God/Ogre character’s story word-for-word, and decided it would be less embarrassing if Ryu blasted him into a pile of goo as soon as possible before anyone noticed. In a series where even characters who must die for the story to make any sense (Nash, Rose, Vega, Gouken) keep coming back to life, it is going to be hilarious if Necalli ends up with the dubious distinction of being the only SF character who actually stays dead.

Indeed.
Then again, Seth didn't seem to be loved either, and he turned out to be the only SFIV fighter besides Juri to return to SFV, even if very different from how he was before. Maybe a similar solution could be used for Necalli, doing severe alterations to him before he returns? Very, very unlikely, but not impossible.
As for Luke, apparently Capcom does plan to bring him back in SFVI - the question is whether he'll manage to return as the new face of the series or just as a secondary fighter with no more relevance than Zangief or Blanka. To be honest, I don't care; all I hope is that Laura also returns in VI - not only because she's Brazilian, but because I consider she's one of the few newcomers who actually succeeds in the World Warriors concept of representing the fighting style and country she's from.
Rashid and Menat are also cool, but I'm not sure if their fighting styles (Menat's psychic powers aside) are actually real like Laura's or Luke's.
(and I also think Capcom should add a Kim Kaphwan lookalike to be Ryu's true friendly rival in SFVI, rather than have Luke in this role)
Maybe I'm this person right in front of you... nah probably not though.

quote: I hope with a hypothetically better future product, Street Fighter 6 also takes a more sensible approach to data sizes. A game this ugly should not be so large.
I'm guessing it might stay the same.
The old excuse was that Unreal Engine didn't support differential patching. From what I recall, SFV takes all the individual game files and packs and compresses them into around 50 or so "pak" files. Thus you end up with individual pak files that can be several GB in size, and without differential patching you have to redownload the entire file even if you only change a single byte within a single tiny asset file that is contained within it.
There is a problem with this excuse. Unreal Engine apparently did add support for differential patching years ago.
However, I've also heard the excuse that such differential patching support is platform-dependent, and that the PS4 is one of the platforms that does not support it. This isn't just an Unreal Engine thing, it also depends on the how the platform itself (Valve, Sony, etc) handles patches.
And there is the matter than it is simply easier for companies to just replace whole files. Capcom particularly might not care about the PC's fate if they really can't supply smaller patches for the PS4 release, but even if it is possible on both platforms they still might not care.
