In a recent interview conducted by Softbank publishing for Capcom vs SNK2's release, Capcom's general producer of development Noritaka Funamizu revealed that Capcom vs SNK 2 will mark a period to Capcom's 2D fighting games. The following is a translated quote from the interview.
"As I may have said before, this [title] will mark away one period to [our] 2D fighting games. Being such a title, the staffs have put in a lot of effort to it. [I] definitely want everyone to check it out. If you see it, you can experience all the details and fun which [we've] packed in it. Plus the multi-platform connection is a new challenge, so I would like [people] to try it out too. On the DC (laughs)."
The interview can be read in Softbank publishing's Bi-weekly Dreamcast Magazine, 9/28 (2001/vol.9).
It doesn't seem like Capcom will stop making 2D fighters- but we may not see one for a while, at least. My personal guess is a year to two years, but we'll have to wait and see.
Notice that the on the side of CvS2's cover/jewel case, the words "2D will Never Die" is written in large Japanese text. Oh, and if you're wondering why he said "on the DC", it's because the interview is for a DC magazine.
