Aya Brea Returns in Parasite Eve2. |
Details on the sequel to Square's
hit Cinematic RPG- Parasite Eve, has been revealed.
Originally a Japanese Novel, Square's
prequel was based on the identical plot of Mitochondrias making an uproar
and taking control of the world. Parasite Eve 2 is still based on a storyline
centering on Aya Brea and Mitochondria. However, the game now begins in
in Los Angeles and takes place in the West coast. In addition, Aya's enemy
is no longer only the revolt of nature.
New faces appaers in the game. |
While its prequel was a Cinematic
RPG, Parasite Eve 2 is labled as a Cinematic Adventure Game. Thus the game
is no longer based on walking around and leveling up, but solving puzzles
and mysteries.
As the goal of the series has always
been to be well tempoed , PE2 has made dramatic changes, allowing players
to experience through the game seamlessly. Two major changes in relation
are the use of streaming movies in the background of the game at times,
and the change to real-time battles in comparison to the turn based system
in PE1.
Storyline
Parasite Eve 2 takes place in September
4th, 2000- 3 years since the Eve incident in New York. While the government
suppressed the Eve incident to avoid of any panic which may riot in the
country, incidents involving over Mitochondria still took place over the
States.
In September 4th of the Year 2000,
Mitochondria creatures were reported to have invaded the Acropolis Tower
of Downtown Los Angeles. While the SWAT team were sent in to secure the
area, communicatings with them were lost and their helicopters were hit
by someone unknown. As a last attempt, the FBI called in the MIST team,
and in the group, Aya Brea was to be seen.
Storyline take place in more than Just
one city. |
Aya Brea
Aya Brea (now age 27) now
works under MIST, an operation team under the FBI which specializes in
anti-Mitochondria operations. The mitochondrias are still active in Aya's
Body. While the activities of the Mitochondrias hide her aging, Aya still
fears of the possibility of them taking control of her body one day. However,
she does not let the fear overtake her, and fights with her Parasite abilities
for her new workplace.
Fighting System
In PE2, the normal field screen
is used for battle similary to PE1. However there is no longer a ATB (Active
Time Battle) bar, and the battle points (othe rthan event scenes) are no
longer predetermined.
Battles can take place anywhere. |
The battle system is composed of
3 elements- the HP (HitPoints) and MP (mitochondriaPoints) at the top left,
the Radar indicating enemie locations at the top right, and the wepon indicator
at the bottom right. Players can now hit objects on the screen as well,
allowing them to effectively damage the enemy. As can be seen from the
example here <Image>, Aya shoots
the electricity cord hanging from the wall to damage the enemy walking
for her.
Aya also still has the ability to
use Parasite abilities <Image>,
such as combusting enemies. Likewise to her weapons, the Parasite abilities
now have an effect range as well. While some abilities have a wide range,
others may have a log but narrow range, as can be seen..

While the old supporting characters
such as Maeda are not confirmed to be in the game, new supporting characters
are confirmed- and unlike PE1, some support Aya in battles. It is not certain
of Eve from PE1 will be back in the game.
Madman's Notes -
Personal view of the game, from
playing it at the Tokyo Game Show: BioHazard. Or so to call, Resident Evil
in English. While PE1 had a touch of BioHazard (however the games played
very differently), PE2 is very very similar to BioHazard. The main character
runs around the field, shooting weapons at practically anything that moves.
The battle system needs no more running (to wait for the player's turn):
just get into shooting range, and empty out those shells. And the gaem
is no longer centered on leveling up: players need to solve puzzles, collect
items and use them in the right spots, just like...
While this may have sounded negative,
it is very much the opposite- the game plays much better with the system,
since PE1 was never intended to be a game to be based on battles. The graphics
have improved even more since Final Fantasy VIII, and the rendering of
characters look very smooth. On a side note, Aya now has a voice during
the battle scenes.
Aya can conbust enemies, like Eve did
to humans in PE1. |
As can be seen from the images
included in this article, PE2 has Bio-Organic enemies <Image>.
One confirmed peculiar enemy from the Tokyo Game Show is a humanoid monster
named "No.9", which had the ability to talk. This leads to the possibilities
of a secret corporation or group which is experimenting the uses of Mitochondria.
Vice president of Square Nobuhiko Sakaguchi hints that there is a
reason for the game rotating around the West Coast in PE2, and that it
relates to the Storyline.
