Microsoft has made an official statement regarding the disk scratch issue on Japanese Xbox consoles, reported by both media and consumers since the first day when the machine was released.
The following is a translation by The Madman's Cafe.
Concerning the effects on DVD disks when running on the Xbox
Minor scratches may sometimes occur on the outside of DVD/CDs after running in the Xbox. This is a natural phenomenon which happens with friction, and there has been no past reports that they have effected normal gameplay, DVD playback or CD music playback.
Regardless of this matter, please contact Xbox customer support if there is a problem in gameplay or playback by any chance. If the disk becomes unplayable from normal use, Microsoft will repair or replace the console, as written in the warranty agreements in the instruction manual.

Short Comment- Er.. yipes. So they'll replace the machine, but won't even pay for the disk if it goes dead? Moreso, this is a Specification?? I was somwhat pro-Xbox up to this point, but it's beginning to sound like the *old* Microsoft again, with their OS and its bugs that they call "specifications". Such a pity.. - "Madman" H. Moriarty
