"Over the past couple of years, GameSpot has had to make many compromises to its service in the interest of economics rather than our readers. Just two examples: GameSpot now accepts "industry standard" invasive ad units whose function often seems to be to annoy rather than inform....
...
More compromises along these lines seem inevitable. Ad units will become more invasive, and our costs to deliver things like the GameSpot Live streaming video service continue to skyrocket. Looking ahead 12 months, I imagined GameSpot becoming a service that I myself would no longer be interested in using... The problem is that it's simply not possible to give this service away for free to the 10 million or so people who visit GameSpot every month. But we've decided that's not going to stop us from building it.
Does this mean that GameSpot will no longer offer services to nonpaying readers? Absolutely not. GameSpot Basic, our free service, will offer critical content for free for every one of the thousands of games on our site, including screenshots, hints, pricing info, GameSpot review scores, reader reviews, and more. In addition, we will continue to offer free access to our new content for seven days after its publication."
